Abe's Oddysee: Help please-early in factory

I got Abe's Oddyssee from a bargain bin about 3 years ago, and it's been sitting in a box since then because it wouldn't run on my computer. My 5-year old CD-ROM drive finally crapped out, and when I replaced it, dang it if Abe didn't load up and run just fine!

I have just started playing and getting a feel for the techniques needed to get past sligs, etc. I also have a detailed walkthrough (I believe it's the Sinjin walkthrough mentioned in one of the topics.)

Anyway, I am completely stuck in what that walkthrough labels as Secret Area B. It is very early in the factory, and you have to blow up the landmines in the right pit to get to this area. There are two Muds and a grinder above and one below, and a lever below with which to alternate speeds of the grinders. I can free the Mudokons there, but when I am finished, I can't get back up again, because the hoist-up point on the platform I originally drop in on is over a gap between two lower platforms. I can't figure out how to reach it. I tried chanting down below to go through the warp-gate, but as soon as I stop chanting the gate disappears.

I noticed that the walkthrough description of the very beginning of this area doesn't match what I'm seeing, although the rest does. The w/t says after freeing the Muds just "return to the surface," but I can't figure out how.

Thanks for any help you're able to give me.

Hello, Doug, welome to the forums!

WOW, you mean you had one of the greatest platform games of all time for three years and never played it? I'm happy that you can enjoy it for now on

Ok, now let's go to the help: [B]in the screen you described, you need learn how to to make a RUN-JUMP.

First, hold the -SHIFT- key, then press the right ARROW. Abe will start to run right.

Second, right after staring to run, press SPACE to jump. That.'s it! Abe will perform a hideous RUN-JUMP movement, and he will hopefully grab the upper ledge.

Now, get back to the surface.

This first time, don't try to save every single mudokon you find, because that can be very frustrating. Rescue mudokons as much as you can, but don't waste a whole afternoon trying to figure out how save them all. You can try it later, after finishing the game once. I still play Abe's Oddysee and Abe's Exoodus just for fun, even having finished the like a dozen times

Hey, thanks for the reply and the help. That did it -- first try.

I'm going to take your suggestion to not try to save everyone the first time to heart. I have been trying to do that, and as you say, it is very frustrating.

I'm glad that I was finally able to get this game working. I'm not a big platform-gamer, but this game has me completely captivated. I only paid 7 bucks for it, and so I wasn't about to send 10 bucks to the company for a replacement disk. Good think I didn't just chuck it.

By the way, is there any significance to the yellow Abe-faces (pretty much like your photo) that appear in the lower corner of some of the screens? I can't figure out if they mean anything or not, but they seem to appear only rarely.

While I have you on the line, has the quintology been abandoned? I thought I read somewhere that the 3rd episode is going to be console-only. That would be a shame.

Thanks again for the help, and for the warm welcome.

Welcome to the forums! I'm glad to see another person hooked on the Oddworld series! The yellow Abe faces are just there for decoration, I believe, and when the game is loading. The quintology has not been abandoned, as a matter of fact, Munch's Oddysee will be coming out shortly. Did I answer your questions? If you need anything else, give me a roar, I'm the big winged lizard running around like crazy with a furry lizard man and a mutant Slig/Slog!

Hmm. *thoughtful* did we ever figure out if MO was going to be released for PC as well? Something about processors in most home PCs not being fast enough, or something? Ignore me, I'm rambling.

Oh, and to echo BD's sentiments, greetings greetings, if you see any little dingy brown rugs hanging round, don't tread on them, they don't like it. That's all.

*salutes and runs off to lectures*
