Summer Movie Extravaganza (the Sequel)

Well, there are a lot of high-profile films coming out over the summer including:
Star Wars 6 and War of the Worlds - Lucas and Spielberg once again heading against each other, as with Close Encounters/Star Wars and Minority Report/Star Wars. (any other instances?)

We've also Hitchikers Guide to the Galaxy - initial reviews suggested it was bad, but these were from Americans and Brits are seeming to really like it.

There's Batman Begins for te superhero market... should be.. uh...

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, who's writer says the original Willy Wonka was better written - he wrote the new one without seeing the original.

For computer gamers, isn't Bloodrayne (the movie) coming out soon?

Kingdom of Heaven is also coming - from the director of Gladitor, and though I believe Gladiators success to be partly down to a strong character-driven story, this one appears to the be the standard ancient lots of big CGI battles...

Land of the Dead is striking me as damn awesome.

And there's a bunch of others that slip my mind - what are you looking forward to?

I might also mention that "Guess Who" looks like the worst film in existence.

Guess Who was good?

Bloodrayne looks good- wish it was set in modern times, though.

I'm not sure if it's this year or next, but I definatly want to see Splinter Cell.

Star Wars, of course, I will see...

Napoleon Dynomite was good, but it's way overrated. Give it a rest, people... the movie was good, but it doesn't deserve the attention it's getting... :\

Saw the Hitchhikers Guide last night... As a fan of the books, I say it retold the story rather nicely in a feature length movie. Things to be noted are: this is not a movie completely based on the novels, and that the entire plot is rather different. It's still enjoyable though.

Land of the Dead looks ok.

Yeah, but all of the versions (radio, book, TV, movie) have different plots. Before he died, Douglas Adams said that the movie will specifically contradict the plot of the book more than it will contradict the other versions.

On another note, when you mentioned "Guess Who", I thought you meant they had made a movie of that board game, which would only be slightly worse than anything with Ashton Kutcher.

Rather strangely, when you plug "guess who" into Google Image Search, it comes up with a picture of someone poking a finger into a woman's cleavage. I would have posted it here but I thought it may raise the ire of the mods.

LMAO! What the hell?

Anyway, I saw Hitchiker. I thought it was great. I read the first four books years ago, and can't remember much. I thought the animations in the actual Hitchikers Guide were very funny and were a good way of getting across jokes. The narration also helped tell the story. It was good old British humour.

I might check out War of the Worlds when it comes out too. I've never seen the original.

Check.. um.. paragraph 1.
Unless you're referring to someone else.

Hitchhikers got 1/5 in the Independant newspaper, which disappoints me muchly. I'll see it tomorrow.

Seems amazing, except for the shitey clichéd ending. Where'd all the originality go?

People.

See Kung Fu Hustle.

It is the best Kung Fu movie. I'm not going to dignify that with an "ever" or "of the year;" it is simply the best Kung Fu movie. Hilarious, exhilarating, and most importantly, extremely tacky and lame in the special effects department. Therefore, it is the best Kung Fu movie.

See it.

I saw Hitchhikers earlier today. Some minor spoilers in my small review.
Visually, it was utterly amazing. I particularly loved the whole Vogon design, their planet, and every single little thing Vogon. Awesome species!

The humour was good, to an extent, I thought. The POV gun, the guys who make planets painting Ares Rock (etc) was fantastic, but some of the jokes fell a little bit flat.. and kind of ran out of steam. For example, when the whale was falling through the air, it started funny, the way it talked really fast and surprised, but then it became a kind of dull monologue that really ruined the effect. :/

Over use of romance and toning down of wit and sarcasm wasn't appreciated.

Overall, a great film. I liked the way it was just silly, and didn't take itself seriously, even if some of the jokes were delivered as such (unfortunately).

Did anyone else except me notice that when they were filling out the release form for Trillian, when they pointed out the picture of Zaphod that there was the origional Marvin from the miniseries? I thought that was an amusing reference.

Also, the Marvin in the film just wasn't funny... He was just depressed. It was like he was just trying to be funny.

I also saw Hitchhikers.

Pretty good. Not great, but it had a few funny moments.

To be honest, I liked it a Hell of a lot better than the last two Star Wars movies... those abysmal piles of filth.

I loved Hitchiker. Saw it twice.

We need more humor like that in movies. Great, sharp, random CLEAN humor. It was only PG! That wins a lot of my respect.

Well the original was a radio play so that would have been tough to see.

I'm going to see Hitchhikers tomorrow night. I'm not sure what to expect though because the reviews have been so polarised.

Uhm. The original was actually a novel by H.G. Wells. And it was adapted into a movie in the fifties or sixties.

And critics are idiots. THHGTTG is very good.
