Did anyone see that Discovery Channel special two years ago?

Two years, DC did a documentary on the last year of dev on Crimson Skies and the OSW pitch, where Lanning and Fries hammer it out with each other that this game will be all about...
In this doc, which I un/fortunately saw, they revealed the greatest plot twist of the whole game...the de-pantsing...they also showed before and after in-game footage of the Stranger...his after footage apparently used to look like a more muscular form of his current stage, with moose antlers growing out of his head...
This doc also contained a CG sequence involving Clakkers I had never before or since...
I was just curious if anyone else in this community saw this doc...

I watched it when it first came out. It gave the impression that the boat was going to be a more important aspect of the game.

It didn't really give anything away that we did not already know. It would be obvious to anyone that Stranger was a steef, even from the early parts of the game. I mean its like Clark Kent as Superman, its obvious he's just wearing different clothes.

Now, what suprised me was that he was already a full grown steef. I was under the impression that he would become more of a beast as the game went on. I expected him to start growing horns and a second set of legs. I also thought he might have been like the wolfman, changing at night. Perhaps he would become out of control as he changed like a mad cow, so he would need an operation to fix this. I never thought he could hide his legs in his pants like that.

I never thought he could hide his legs in his pants like that.
Realistically, he couldn't. There is no way that he could have even moved the way he was able to by squeezing together the kind of legs he had, and scrunching them together in boots and trying to walk would definately break them. The legs are too different and dissimilar to be used like he was using them.
  • There are too many joints in the back legs
  • The legs are much too thin to abuse like that
  • The hooves would definately be a problem stability-wise
Unless he wanted to run around the landscape like he was torso-deep in a vase, it couldn't REALLY happen. But note the "really." This is fiction, and some things can be streatched.
One more point. He would've had to compact what was either more of his spine or a pelvis to fit the shape of a more humanoid lower body, and by compact I mean crush. And that would cause even more problems.
Stranger's got very problematic backside.

Who knows? Maybe Stranger is a contortionist.

Or partially composed of a jelly-like structure of bones.

Or part ferret.

...

My money's on the ferret.

I don't think we could call it impossible considering we don't know the details of his anatomy or the contents of his boots. It doesn't really matter, this is oddworld, not the real world.

I wondered about the feasibility of the pants and boots as well, but I'm not convinced its impossible. Besides, OWI have generally tried to keep the need to suspend disbelief to gameplay elements. I may be wrong, but I think they probably have diagrams somewhere of how Stranger's legs fit into those boots.

And speaking of diagrams, I'd really like to get some pics of Stranger from the operation pamphlet. Those seemed quite cool.

well, I think that the Doc, since he was the only one who knew Stranger's secret, must have

A.) Known/ raised Stranger when he was young

or...

B.) Felt sympathy on Stranger (unlikely, since he's a Vykker), and agreed to help Stranger.

Or some other method that I can not think of at this moment. Either way, I think that Doc gave him the specialized boots.

More likely, the Doc is just famous, Stranger knew he was the only one who could "fix" his legs, and the Vykker exploited that like the greedy summabitches that Vykkers are.

Doc was only doing his job, people.

As he put it, he had "a business to run." I mean, if you think about how much sawing off half a torso and splicing two sets of legs together would cost, could you really blame the guy for... you know... charging money?

Let us not forget that the Industrialists aren't "evil," they just have a different view point than the heroes of the Oddworld games. It's always been that way.

And I don't think Doc "knew" Stranger from some previous encounter; he was only makin' a livin'.

The doc was only after the money, nothing more. He was the only doctor that could perform the operation so he was able to charge as much as he wanted. Stranger obviously had bad feelings toward the guy, so there's no chance he raised him. Its also obvious that he had no sympathy for Stranger, saying its his problem not his.

Stranger got the boots from Splinterz, not the Doc.

I thought it was just a boot polishing kit from Splinterz?

Oh. That's Cool.

And this may not be relevant, but if you look up close with the camera when Stranger is in "cowboy mode", his butt is unusually large, and it looks like there something extra back there.
