Gaming: Is Sniping Cowardly?

Do you think sniping in games is cowardly and evil? Discuss.

I think it really all comes down to the game, and level design. I don't think games should have sniper spots that are booby trappable and have no effective way to remove the sniper.

Also the sniper rifle effects whether or not it's an acceptable tactic. Take the latest UT game (Which I now proudly own ^^) Both of the sniper rifles in the game give you very big clues to the location of the sniper, and generally require more than one shot to a kill.

Now, Discuss!

I like snipering, though I don't do it often. On BF:V, On Operation Irving I decided to have a go snipering, because in the Americans homebase all most of them do is stand there for ages whilst another helicopter spawns (which only holds two people ) I had fun snipering a lot of them down.

On BF:V you can't tell where the shot comes from, but whenever you die, the camera moves up and watches the person who shot you, so whenm you respawn you can go kill the sniper. Nobody killed me however, and by bullets ran out. It's about a ten minute walk back to base, so I just tried to steal a helicopter

*goes and plays BF:V*

EDIT: Anywho, I don't think it's cowardly and evil at all, just rather annoying if you're the victim and you don't know where your enemy is.

I don’t think Sniping is cowardly I think its class. It takes precision and stealth as well as ability.

It depends in which way you Sniper. If you're having a laugh in a multiplayer game then fair play. But if on an online and you're always snipering people, then really they are gonna get pissed off. Thus they will think you are a coward and wont play with you again, and you'll be an Online billy no-mates (how sad). But if playing singleplayer mode then, hey knock yourself out (don't really though).

Single player mode: Fine.
Multiplayer/Online: If you always use a sniper then shame on you. But if only once or twice with little health then It's O.K.

Sniper rifles are great in UT, but you need skill. Stop. Aim. Shoot. Move. Aim. Shoot. Next Target. Unless you're a headhunter and can get headshots on moving targets

Ah, snipers. Well, its okay if your a good shot with a rifle, but there are to types of "snipers".

The first are the ones who dont have any idea how to use the sniper rifle in the game but just use it for a long shot. "Campers" "AWP whores" etc, etc.

The second are people who are very good shots with the rifle, they understand it. These are the people who kill ya best mate and then would have changed posistions to take an aim at you.

thats my two pence.

I'd probably be the first one, since I don't have a steady aim and can't keep up with my target if its moving.

I'm a huge fan of the sniper rifle. For one, it tends to keep me safe! Mostly I enjoy using it in multi-player Halo, you can have some real fun with it if you're with a good group!

I remember when i played 'Counter Strike', can't remember what map it was, but it was a large canyon like thing. Anyway, one of our spies was disguised as an enemy and was trotting along to the enemy base just as one of our own was coming back. However, when the two passed each other, both of their disguises fell and it was evident that the guy coming back to our base was a spy. Anyway, he turned around to attack our spy just as i shot him in the head. It was a pretty lucky shot considering i'm quite crap with sniper rifles and there was alot of lag.

There isn't anything wrong with snipers. However, there IS something wrong with campers (and trust me, there IS a difference).

In most games, Snipers will either play "D" or slowly advance with covering fire. Campers sit in a nitch and only care about their points instead of the team's well-being. A sniper helps the team and can easily be thwarted, and therefore are not "evil" or "cowardly." Campers are piss-annoying, and are therefore f*cking teh s uck.

UT2k4 has a great sniper system. The Sniper Rifle creates a cloud of smoke in front of the user, obscuring vision. The Lightning Gun's beam of electricity is easy to track. So, regardless of which gun you're using, you are fairly balanced with everyone else. Ah, good times on CTF-FaceClassic. I've recieved 2 "Godlike!" awards and 1 "Wickid Sick!" award from sniping on that level.

Hobo, what's your UT tag? I'm putting you on my buddy list. I go as TV_Casualty.

I like sniping, but it's not my only way of attack. I'm constantly moving, but if I'm in a good position for sniping, I'll take a looksie into my scope and get rid of the enemy. After the kill, I keep moving on. In Halo I carry the sniper rifle, but I also have the shotgun for personal kills. I do camp when I'm waiting for ammo though. I camp until I'm full on ammo then get moving.

But what about a game like battlefield on some maps sniping can be class you can take out a load of enemies in a short period of time. It’s efficient and quick.

In my time away, I've been playing Counter Strike. We have a gun called the AWP. It's one shot = kill.

Snipers are the devil. Seriously.

Paintball is all about sniping, I'm usually a camper because it works well and it pisses off the opposing team, in fact my nickname of my team is Camper Kai. I wear this really goofy mask/goggles thing that looks kind of like the thing Pack Rat Palooka wears only a different colour and with larger eyes, it's really cool because it has this night vision option that can see everything in the darkest of places. It rocks when I play night-paintball because my mask is superior to the others and I can snipe (or camp) a person from 300 yards

In all honesty i'm much more of an assault man. Run in with sprey weapons and kill everything that tries to run away.

In Halo 2 the new SMG would be a great backup weapon for the Sniper Rifle.

I s'pose this has already been said... Sniping ruins the fun of a game if put into the hands of a selfish, camping SOB. Nothing's worse than being 1 hi KO'd by a bitch trying to rack up a good score. Though getting even one shot at sweet revenge is a superb feeling.

Short and simple: If the game engine allows it, then it is perfectly legit. What is NOT legit, is people using third party programs, and bugs in the game.

To be honest, any decent gamer could kill off a sniper. If you can't outwit a sniper, then you need more practise at the game.

A decent sniper will find multiple good hiding spot to move around to. After he fires a shot from one he'll move to the next. Tricking the enemy into thinking there are multiple snipers. I use the AWP in CS. But only as its British make and i'm very patrioctic. CS needs a damn SA80!

Doesn't work like that. A sniper is supposed to kill someone in one shot. A sniper is very easily detected once he has fired his shot, especially since the gun is so loud. If the sniper misses, he will give away his location. The enemy will instantly turn to look in his direction, and see him running off. In that splitsecond, a well trained gamer could easily pick off the running gunner as he is moving to his next hiding place.

In HALO PC, you can just hop into a banshee, and bomb the sucker. The banshee is impervious to all light weaponry. Assault rifles, shotguns, sniper rifles, plasma pistols and rifles, and standard rifles won't penetrate. You need either a fuel rod gun or a missile launcher.(failing that, another banshee) Needless to say, campers don't live long in MP HALO PC.

Actually ferill, in most computer games, I'd have you dead before you even got to the sniper rifle. You'd be fighting back with whatever you spawned with. After that I'd camp your spawn point, unless of course the spawns were random.
