Actually, no, Sam wasn't replaced with the last Gabbiar Tin - that was there originally. Sam was just taken out because the game would taken that much longer to make with her. It would be another storyline, although it and the one we've got would intermingle a lot.
Instead, OWI have toned it down to something much simpler. Perhaps a little too simple - for example, is the Abe/Latamire dysfunctional relationship still implemented? That took up half the game in early plot versions.
