So, I just finished watching The Thing (the new one). It was a lot better than I expected, but it wasn't up to par with the '82 version. The trailers didn't give a really good impression of it in my opinion. It was also a bit more action oriented than scary.

Huge respect for the guys for making the thing itself look really good though! (Good as in genuinely creepy and alien-like.)

I'm not sure whether I liked the final part or not, it was well done though. Also one thing that bothered me a bit was that a lot of the scenes were really similar to the John Carpenter's version, even though this is a prequel. Not saying that that's necessarily a bad thing though, just that there were some really similar scenes.

Overall, good. Not great, not horribly bad, but an enjoyable movie. Also props for putting Adebisi in the movie, haha.

Oh, and in one part, the thing's arm falls off and it looked like an albino paramite, hah.

You like the Speed Racer movie? Like... as a guilty pleasure, right? Right?
It's not a movie I can ever recommend to anyone, as it's so stylised and deliberately wierd at times that most people will hate it. But if you have precisely the right taste in films, then you'll absolutely love it. And I do.

No, because you're only going to be ranting about how it's not the same as the comic, rather than just accepting that it's not a simple conversion of medium, it's a remake. And, as such, it reflects the era in which it's made. Which is exactly what they should ahve done.

They turned the look of the party into Nazis and the taste of the party into conservatives.

They also turned V into a hero.

I found the transition from comic to film much more successful than with Watchmen
I so much hate the movie. how could they completely destroy the essence of the comic? oh Zack Snyder. never mind

The Room,

That's right, I watched The Room, and it was great. I watched it on my own but there were some points where I was actually laughing to myself, the writing is awful! But it's the acting that makes this movie so bad its good!

The Nazi thing is because it's a common motif understandable to most of the audience. As for the taste of the party, the film is no longer about Thatcherism, it's about American Neo-Conservatives. Like I said, remake.

Then why set it in the UK?

And the main problem was making V a pretty unambiguous hero. Which isn't the point.

That's a bigger problem, yes. I would describe him as a mildly ambiguous hero, rather than totally unambiguous, but that's a matter of personal opinion. But at least the character did spark off some wider discussion at the time about how to define terrorism/freedom fighter and whether his actions should be condemned or praised.

I don't know. They painted a very clear picture in the film, which was part of the problem. I wouldn't put it that V wasn't ambiguous enough as much as I would that Norsefire were utterly and unambiguously the bad guys.

I remember reading somewhere that Alan Moore was complaining that the film totally missed the mark, but liked that Anonyfags had adopted Guy Fawkes as their motif.

Not the V for Vendetta comic book =/= Not good.

This is just what happened with X-Com. If it didn't have the same name, nobody would care.

The new season of Skins started a few days ago, watched the first episode. Eh, it was really weird. Not necessarily in a good way. I did like the song in the beginning though, I might post it to the Music thread.

EDIT: Just saw the second episode. Had a pretty sad twist near the end...

Call me a faggot, but I've been watching How I Met Your Mother and really enjoying it. I used to put it off as being a lame, generic sitcom, but I've found it's actually quite well-written with lots of clever and witty jokes.

Coincidentally, I always follow up someone saying 'Yeah I really like Big Bang theory!' as they tend to with a not quite muted mumble of 'what a faggot'.

I hate that show.

Yeah, fuck the Big Bang Theory.

How I Met Your Mother is pretty funny though.

Anyways, I recently got Netflix and have been using the fuck out of it. I watched Red State yesterday and just finished Tucker and Dale vs Evil. Red State had some good action scenes, but the plot and characters seemed off a bit. Still enjoyed most of it. Kind of wish Kevin Smith had made a Clerks 3 or something rather than this as his last movie though.

Tucker and Dale vs Evil was pretty funny I thought.
