Alpha, if you happened to miss that the 'Buddy List & Post Count' thread was utterly pointless, I shall explain it to ye.

Basically, you can see the members post count by looking under their respective avatars. I can see this would cause immediate problems, due to its futility. And the Buddy List- this could have survived, but really was pointless. "Hey, I'm your friend!". "Great.".

DI is just upholding his moderator position. Agression sometimes makes people notice things. Example; The school bully beats you up for going into his territory. I do not think any wise person would return there anytime soon, unless they find beatings rather enjoyable. *Shudder*

So here we are. Hostility adds to your wisdom, in some cases. I am not promoting hostility, I am just stating that it must sometimes be used.

When the issue is the English language- you are expected to be able to form coherent sentences. That is just part of speaking any language. When a poster posts 'I spek ia the. lol lol', they must be flamed. This cannot stand. Punctuation and spelling isn't so bad- but forming sentences is. We can overlook spelling and grammarical errors.

The hostility, that Esus pointed out in his initial post, was not detailing the approach Disgruntled Intern uses when disciplining. Esus was talking about the hostility between members, through day to day forum discussions.

This thread is not about Disgruntled Intern's methods of discipline. If there were a problem with it, he wouldn't be a Moderator. As it stands, Off-Topic requires Moderators who are 'tougher' than most. DI, Majic, and SeaRex, haven't faltered in their duties, and I think those who are complaining should rather focus their attention on themselves, and their own rule-breaking.

pretentiousness is not an excuse for hostility.

the majority of threads that most likely spawn hostility are either because of: a) differing views, b) grammar/semantics/English mechanics, or c) random/other.

from what i've seen in my short time here, i would say that semantics, spelling, capitalization, and general mechanics account for a vast majority of insults.

it's hilarious. people think it's still clever to criticize on a linguistic basis when they can't spell or properly articulate themselves.

unless it's completely unintelligible, it's about what you type, not how you type it.

on a basis of 'differing views', i think hostility is only natural. not to the point of unintelligent insults, but friendly hostility is an acceptable medium for anybody with a modicum of intelligence.
Look, there's a difference between being an English scholar, knowing every word in existence and having perfect grammar, to actually trying your best to type and use capital letters and so forth.

And why people always make threads here about people arguing is stupid. I'm not sure if you think that the world is a happy place where everyone gets along and no one debates with each other or what it is, but it's not real.
In real life people argue. Get over it.

capitalization is nothing to get your panties in a bunch over, fascist.

I guess that the human hears what he wants to hear.

What i meant was, that i someone writes a message without using punctation and commas, i don't get anything of it. I just have re-read it untill i have a slight idea of what he meant. It's really annoying.

Oh, and why did you have to write that??? I don't get it. If you have any problem with me, then PM me, and we'll sort it out.

When you have the word 'language' correctly spelled several times in quotes in your post, or the posts before it, it becomes quite obvious that you're purposely mis-spelling it in a vague attempt at making some sort of point.

Knock it off.

Well of course... What did you expect them to learn?? Chinese?? lol kidding..

Well, i'm just saying that people could make an effort in putting some puncation in their posts, i mean c'mon, it can be that hard... Then rather missplace them, than not containing any.
Yes, they have to learn a whole new language, or else they wont be able to talk to us... When i was younger, and entered this forum, i always a diactionary next to me, in chase i saw an unknown word. Now, i just use MS Word's thesaurus, it's really helping, and takes lesser time than using the diactionary. Though i still use the diactionary when i don't understand the word, even after using the thesaurus.
I'd suggest doing the same, if you're not good at writing english.

They nearly all learn English at school anyway. Most Germans speak better English than the first language-ers.

As opposed to what, exactly? Speaking in their native tongue that nobody understands? This forum is accepted as being a primarily English speaking forum - not multi-lingual. (Though I don't think rules exist forbidding foreign languages) Other forums can accomodate needs for different languages, such as the German-speaking Oddworld forum.

It's not so much about people arguing, as about people needlessly attacking (flaming, if you will) other members for minor things, such as spelling mistakes or lack of understanding. We're not an elitist society. Much.

Discourse on boards like this seem to fall in to the same pattern, debate turns to argument, argument turns to name calling. The gut-level lashout is at best a childish response, but it seems a rather popular way to communicate in a number of the forums here. i guess i have become used to it, almost expect it.

What i can`t get a grip on are the members who blast other members in the WELCOME THREAD, for f#*k sake!! " Hi, welcome to our forum, you sorry-ass, drool`n moron, you don`t know shit, and your pissing me off". Way to through out the mat.

In my welcome thread a pointlessly malicious poster ( who, it would seem has vanished ) told me that if i messed with him , i would get such a vicious verbal beating that i may never post again. Now that`s something to look forward to.
That kind of crap makes me want to bait the jurk, but i am sure it would put a number of people off.

*Looks at Voodoo Hand's welcome thread* Something should have been done about that post. I've noticed that there's been an increase of garbage in the Welcomes and Birthdays forum.

Along with Voodoo's thread, at least two others come to mind that had problems. The most recent would be the welcome thread of Agent-Sarah with some pointless debate over the effects of sugar to the body and whatnot. The other one is that of Angel-FoX-crescent, which went on and on with just random, pointless chatter. I personally think the moderators may need to monitor what goes on in that forum a bit more.

I don't think we've ever had a problem with people whose first language is not English. This may be because a) they are conscious of the fact that they are not as good so they are more careful and b) their problems tend to be small spelling mistakes rather than full-scale grammatical genocide.

If you look through various threads there has been little or no accusations directed at non-english speakers but there have been plenty at people like yourself who just can't be bothered trying. So don't even try defending a minority who doesn't need it.

In regards to language, I simply prefer letting whatever crap is spewed pass, unless it's just entirely unintelligible. It's more of a hassle to play grammar police, than to quietly accept internet superiority. The same goes for a thread with spam/banter, also known as chit chat. Attempting to set a thread straight tends to result in nothing but flaming, grudges, and people making themselves look like jackasses. If you feel a member is being hostile or rude, a thread is degrading into nothingness, or there are administrative problems, the easiest solution is a pm/email to a staff member. Unless it's a nitpick, no moderator is going to hate you for making their job that much easier.

Lesson of the day: don't cause undo stress. There are at least 3 or 4 members here that may actually make something of their lives. Destroying their outlook on humanity will not help the race.

Alpha, as I have said every single time I speak of l-a-n-g-u-a-g-e, I usually say "Unless it is your second language". I aint that horrible, honest! Except in real life... Anyways, if english is your second language, that is great. It shows you know one more language than most of us. And then,
:
We can overlook spelling and grammarical errors.
Huzzah! I quote myself But, indeed, if english is your second language, and you are flamed for grammarical errors/ spelling errors, complain until they are eaten alive. Seriously. When flaming is used in these instances, it should not be tolerated.
