Slig noses

I have been thinking (yes dangerous pastime I know), thinking about the biology of sligs (well really my Drakkic race...but since I made them related to sligs I figured sligs would have something similar) specifically the location of their noses and sense of smell.
First the location of the nostrils themselves. I think, they are located on either side of the middle face tentacle, almost in-between the middle tentacle and the ones on either side. Not only that...but I think they have a total of four nostrils (hey..its Oddworld), two on the top and two on the bottom (those two are of course, hidden by the tentacles and can't be normally seen.
Why four? While both sets serve as oxygen intakes(or what ever Oddworld residences breathe), the bottom set (the ones underneath the tentacles), serve as the main 'sniffers' (both me and Teal believe sligs have a keen sense of smell). The top set would have 'some' smell receptors, but most of them the bottom set possess. Now not only does the bottom set have the smelling receptors, but the first inch or two of the bottom of the tentacles, starting at the base.
Why the extra 'patches' of receptors? It increase the chance of catching scents (I am no biologist BTW...this is just my...uh...'reasoning') and therefore hints of possible danger.
Now since industrial sligs have to wear masks (because the gluks make them wear them...as far as I know) and the masks cover the part of the slig's face where the nostrils would be (along with the extra patches of receptors along the bottom of the tentacles), their smelling ability is virtually neutralized, making them unable to really 'smell' anything (including that mudokon hiding in the shadows right in front of them). How the heck to they breathe? Well...someone in other topic mentioned that the 'wiring' connected to the mask may be breathing tubes of sorts, but the 'tubes' only carry air to the top set of nostrils...so sligs still can't smell anything....

This is just a theory...what do you think of it?

Well; it's strange, but certainly plausible; I quite like it. I'd always assumed they had nostrils near the top of their head, like Brachiosauruses.

well, i don't think you can rule out the possibility of sligs having noses...Especially since in AE an flying slig flew past/over abe, and said 'SOMETHIN' SMELLS!'

About the breathing thing: Is it not possible that sligs simply breathe through their mouths? In fact, why can't they have separate organs for breathing and smelling anyway?

I think they breath through their Mask tubes.... If not , why do they have them?

Well I had said in another topic some time ago that the wiring could be carrying signals from the brain to the pants.
The reason I said both sets serve as breathing openings is because the scent molecules need a means to reach the receptors deep within the nose. Mammals and birds do this by breathing. Reptiles like snakes and lizards use their tongues. Sharks by swimming (and sharks don't use their noses for 'breathing').
Sense sligs are not aquatic, they can't use the shark method, there are no forked tongues that I can see (but then...the mask could be preventing the use of it as well, so thats is another possiblity). So I think they use the mammal method, by breathing.

1. I personally think that the pants are wired up to the spinal cord in the tail. Nobody knows though, really...

2. How do you know? Try and remember to distinguish between things OWI have said/done and things that you have made up. After all, it was just you and Teal who decided that Sligs were Arboreal...

3. Sorry, I didn't catch this bit - What makes you think that their olfactory organs are restricted by the masks?

I'm not trying to be argumentative here, I'm just playing the Devil's Advocate...

What about this theory maybe they actually breath through their tenticals (like some reptiles breath through their skin) Well anything possible it's just a suggestion.

1. That is also a possiblity...but we may never know for sure.

2. As far as I know...OWI has never mentioned anything that could hint at where and how sligs lived before 'employment'. Besides...they look more likely to be tree dwellers then swimming types to me.

3. There wouldn't be saffishent(sp) air flow with the mask on for the scent particals to reach the scent receptors going by what I stated earlier that the main scent receptors are in the bottom set of nostrals.

This doesn't answer my quesion. Since we don't know how they smell or where their olfactory organs are, this reason is based entirely on your theory, which itself is party based on the 'fact' that their sense of smell is impaired, and partly made up. What is it that makes you think that their sense of smell in impaired?

Dan I was going completely by my belief that the slig's 'nose' is some where around the face tentacles. Beside...our sense of smell would be greatly reduced if our nose was covered up by something...even with a piece of tissue paper. So a leather mask (or what ever the slig's mask is made out of) would have the same effect.
