A proposition for all of you artists...

I noticed several of you guys are pretty decent 3D sculptors. As such, I invite you to be a part of a project of mine.

I'm keeping it on the down-low for now, as I want this to be a surprise (even to those of you who agree to help me with it). I assure you however that it will be more impressive than any fan-generated media to appear on this forum to date.

Before you say I'm blowing smoke, I'd like to introduce you to another project of mine; Arenas. I'm currently working for a company run by a subsidiary of Id Software, TritinFilms, as a concept designer and composer. My good friend, Joe, builds and animates 3D characters/environments for a living. Myself and my friends at TritinFilms are a dedicated creative staff, and we work our respective asses off to create both original and fan-made media.

So what are we doing now? Well, Arenas is seeing downtime while we wait to clear some legal shit, as well as secure more funding. While we wait, Joe and myself have decided to produce a custom-made Oddworld fan film. About 5-7 minutes in length. The premise? Well, you'll have to wait and see!

What we need from you:

• One fully-rendered Slig model
• One fully-rendered Slig model with jacket and tie (see below)
• One fully-rendered Glukkon pud model
• One fully-rendered Mudokon model

Files must be .obj or .3ds, and/or be compatible with 3Dmax. Models should be hig p. Pre-rigged is a huge plus. Shoulders, elbows, knees, ankles, wrists, fingers (both hand and face) joints pre-rigged would be ideal. I know a few of you have already started/finished custom Slig models of your own. If you think you can save a little time/effort by reworking those models as opposed to building them from scratch, be my guest. However, be sure to post them here so I can have a look at them and throw a few notes your way first. Don't worry about making the skins too complex, we'll handle that.

Here's some concept art by yours truly to get you guys started...

I want to keep an open dialogue in this thread for questions and brainstorming. A storyboard and pre-viz using Gmod is already in the works. Once the wheels start turning, I will reveal the narrative of this short film, as well as keep you guys up-to-date on it's progress.

Thanks!

Makes me wish I was good at modelling in 3D. Still, this looks like a good idea, I'll be keeping an eye on this.

AlexFili 12-06-2011 11:28 PM

I'll also be watching. My talents are more about game design and testing. But feel free to ask for ideas.

Mudokon_Master 12-07-2011 12:52 AM

I'll be with these guys ^
I'm not one for modelling but definitely open for ideas and opinions. +Rep too, for all your great work. I'll keep an eye on this project and would like to see the outcome:)

moxco 12-07-2011 01:42 AM

I remember Grieva made some pretty nice Big Bro Slig models, but he hasn't posted in a year - maybe you could message him on YouTube?

Havoc 12-07-2011 01:49 AM

Gonna be watching this as well. I don't know the first thing about 3D modeling but I'm very eager to see what our 3D modelers can produce. I've seen things down here that far surpass the original FMV quality, at least on images. Eager to see what they can do with moving models. :D

Sekto Springs 12-07-2011 09:38 AM

Glad you guys are interested, but it seems our 3D artists are very come-and-go. Looks like I'm going to have to take some affirmative action.

nowtun 12-07-2011 09:41 AM

i have a slig i modeled if thats any help?

Edit: oh and a mudokon/Abe

Sekto Springs 12-07-2011 11:14 AM

post pictures!

nowtun 12-07-2011 12:04 PM

it wont let me repost the image as its on my abe's oddysee remake thread. there are also some vids on my youtube channel

Sekto Springs 12-07-2011 01:24 PM

Those are pretty nice, Nowtun.
Do the models fit the listed specifications? Could you post some pictures of the mesh and skins for me? That would be wonderful. :)

nowtun 12-08-2011 02:04 AM

they were made for ingame purposes (my project) so they arent really to a movie level of polygons, the texture is oddworlds own used in munch's oddysee (im not really a character artist so i havnt really bothered making my own textures for charcters only the scenes)

one problem though, i use lightwave to model/animate but they can be saved in .obj format, i'll see if i can export the rig for use with 3Dsmax

Sekto Springs 12-08-2011 09:11 AM

That looks pretty good, Nowtun. The low poly may be a problem, but it's one that can be fixed I feel. We may have to make tweaks to the mesh and possibly do some remodels and specific parts. Even so, our work is more than half done for us.

Do whatever you need to do to get it in working order. Let me know how it goes. :)

As to any others of you that have an affinity for 3D modelling, have at it! We need that Glukkon.

nowtun 12-09-2011 01:46 AM

thanks, i'll remodel it so its up to CG movie levels (to be honest ive never modeled a character to that amount of polys before as i usually model ingame models, so it might take me some time. plus i dont really have a ton of time on my hands at the mo with christmas coming and getting busyer at work and all that. so expect it in january if thats ok?)

Sekto Springs 12-09-2011 08:59 AM

January seems reasonable, I suppose. If you're going to be invested in that, then I'm going to need one of you other guys to provide a Glukkon sculpt.

LauricGK 12-10-2011 08:46 AM

Nice project, good luck !! ;))

Havoc 12-10-2011 10:44 AM

Sekto, maybe you can ask Tim to help on this project. I believe he's got quite a decent skillset in 3D modeling and he's doing a game design study. I've got his Facebook if you want to get in touch with him.

Sekto Springs 12-10-2011 11:18 AM

Tim who?

Splat 12-10-2011 12:20 PM

Tim Cottenham, I presume he means.

Sekto Springs 12-10-2011 12:28 PM

If you think he'd be interested and willing to lend his skills, then by all means.
Havoc, PM me his facebook information and I'll have a chat with him.

Thanks :)

Sekto Springs 12-26-2011 11:41 AM

Just bumping this thread to remind everyone. The holidays will be over soon, and I'd like to get the ball rolling by January. If anyone here knows someone whose services might be of help, please pass this along to them. Facebook, re-tweet, etc. Don't worry, I'm doing some looking on my end too.

Thanks guys :)

Software Bug 12-28-2011 03:07 AM

Hi Sekto,

I admit, its a good idea to bundle powers to get something decent at least in the development stage, I however have been working on some stuff for the past months and can't really spare any time at the moment. As soon as I have some free time I will let you know.

For now, good luck with this project. :)

AvengingGibbons 12-28-2011 07:13 AM

Tim, u still working on that thing you mentioned? ^_-

Sekto Springs 12-28-2011 07:52 AM

Thanks for the interest Tim. I need all the help I can get and as soon as I can get it. Be sure to let me know the second you're available and we'll talk some more. :)

Software Bug 12-28-2011 10:24 AM

@Sekto, sure thing man. Will do.

@AvengingGibbons, Now let's not jack Sekto's thread shall we. :) I am working on stuff, but as I follow a very intense study I have kept quiet to avoid posting another thread about something that goes unfinished. (Like I have before. I hate to disappoint.) It's done when it's done. ;)

Sekto Springs 01-13-2012 12:24 PM

So it's January. Anyone here still interested? :p
I'd like to get this underway by February if possible.

AvengingGibbons 01-18-2012 03:32 PM

I'm interested in seeing the project progress. I'd contribute if I could, but I'm probably not that useful. Have you had anyone say they'll help yet, Sekto?

Sekto Springs 01-18-2012 03:39 PM

Nope. Everyone's too invested in their own projects apparently.
I may just have to start working on this without help.

You just can't count on people these days :p

Mudokon_Master 01-18-2012 11:49 PM

Sekto, I would try PMing Grieva before you make that assumption. He hasn't posted here for quite a long time, but his Youtube account has had recent activity of 2 months ago. Still worth a shot though, he's made some amazing Oddworld models.

Not that I think I could produce something good enough for a project like yours, but how's that likeness to your glukpud guy? tips? (working in sculptris)

I'm trying to get the shape as identical as I can. I'll worry about refinements later..
