Epic Video Game Moments

What are those moments in video games that, no matter how many times you see them, they give you goosebumps and chills inside?

I'll start:

Manco 08-15-2011 03:45 PM

Wings of Fire 08-15-2011 04:07 PM

Obligatory.

Dynamithix 08-15-2011 04:25 PM

Okay, it's Oddworld related, we've all seen this, but c'mon, it's an amazing little cutscene. I remember when I first saw this when I was around 6 years old, had just beaten the Stockyards part (I was very proud of myself too!) and even though I could only understand a tiny bit of English at that age, somehow, I understood everything Abe said in this cutscene. It was really, dare I say... Odd.

The Sims (PS2 Version)

If you miss a day a work the phone rings, if you answer it this very creppy piano music plays, gives me goosebumps everytime.

Also this is an obscure PC game, Titanic Adventure Out Of Time, one of my all time favourites but this guy (At 1:16) is the scariest character in the game! I used to have nightmares about him when I was much younger.

There was also apart at the very end of the game I used to have nightmares about where a stowaway in the engine room smacks you across the head with a spanner.

The Abe's Moon FMV is great and all, but I think this one has more of a goosebumps-inducing quality to it:

"...and we're gonna find 'em."

Havoc 08-15-2011 05:24 PM

As a kid I always thought the ending for the first bossfight in DKC2 was great. The game still holds some very fond memories for me and I have a SNES laying around just for this game. One day I might play it again.

Anyway, ending starts at 3:45.

Oh and right after that, this is to date the best credits music I've ever heard in a game.

Wings of Fire 08-15-2011 06:19 PM

This is also a classic.

Havoc 08-15-2011 06:26 PM

That was insanely cheesy if you ask me =/

Sekto Springs 08-15-2011 06:36 PM

It's MSG. Of course it's fucking cheesy.
My turn...

...

Yes?

DarkHoodness 08-15-2011 07:33 PM

Agreed with the COD4 nuke scene - Also AE's ending. :)

I could probably think of several of these, here's a few for now. Perhaps the most epic GTA mission ever:

Portal 2's ending (WARNING: MASSIVE SPOLIERS). I mean, just... Wow. I hadn't felt that blown away by a game ending in such a long time.

Oh and don't forget the vault door:

Half-Life 2 when you're carried through the citadel - It's a lot better in context as you play through the game:

And speaking of Half-Life, HL2 and episodes had some pretty decent moments - Valve really do know how to make good games. What's notable though are the first 2 chapters of Half-Life 2, Episode 1 were pretty damned amazing, when you return to the citadel - I found myself replaying those 2 chapters several times.

Hmmm... Oh yeah. The human ending FMV in Warcraft III blew me away too during 2004:

Okay sorry I'll stop now. :P I'd love to post stuff from Beyond Good and Evil and Psychonauts here, but since I found the entirety of both those games to be epic, no one part of either of them really stands out for me. :S

The first time I beat Wu in Jade Cocoon 2 was amazing.

I used to borrow JC2 from my Video shop over 6 years ago, but they sold their copy. It took a few years of searching to find my copy. It then took 2 years of playing on and off (and starting again) before I actually finished the game. It was another few months before I unlocked the fight. Including both savefiles, it was about 90 hours by that point.

The fight against Wu was really tough. His combination of Fossa Magna (reduce enemy beast to 1hp) and Shockwave (deal damage to all 3 beasts on a side) was more devastating than I expected. Anadia – the revive spell – was mandatory. It was a long, tiring slog, but I eventually wore him down and beat him on my first attempt. It was a satisfyingly difficult fight and I felt to great to have beaten him after 9 fucking years.

Also, the 1000 Heartless battle in Kingdom Hearts 2 was epic.

Agreed. I still, at age 29, lift my hand up to the screen every time I see that video. :)

This clip (from 2:22 to 3:30) from Grim Fandango gets me every time. The animation is late-90's crappy, but the atmosphere and direction are amazing.

(In case it's not obvious, flowers are the symbol of death in the Eighth Underworld)

Crashpunk 08-16-2011 04:18 AM

On the top of my head.

-Oddworld's cutscenes are pretty epic to this Day

-Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess's final boss and end were really epic.

-The Half-Life 2 Episode 2 ending was pretty good. Its one of the biggest cliffhangers i've seen.

-Portal 2's ending was just incredible. I remember filling up hearing the Turret Opera / Cara Mia

Dynamithix 08-16-2011 04:40 AM

Then why don't you rather post the videos, it's not like it's very epic if you only write a sentence or two about the moments.

Crashpunk 08-16-2011 04:47 AM

Fine then!

This scene is pretty epic as well

MeechCrunchies 08-16-2011 05:02 AM

Some of my personal favorites are :

-The attack on Lindblum in FF9 (Almost made me cry :( )

-The Boardroom ending in Oddysee.
Seeing those assholes fry was so satisfying, even if the first time I hadn't rescued enough Mudokons xD

-Completing a level set in Tomb Raider:The Last Revelation.
I felt so friggin accomplished getting through Cairo completely for the first time. ♥
(over complicated much :fuzconf: )

Laser 08-16-2011 06:03 AM

Simply amazing.

Havoc 08-16-2011 06:16 AM

Oh yeah, Bioshock plot twist was fucking epic. Though looking back on it I don't get why Ryan decided to kill himself instead of using the player to his advantage.

He refused to accept the fact his son was enslaved so heavily he would kill his own father on order. Ryan's philosophy was centered around personal freedom and he died trying to prove it.

This was one of those game-making moments for me. Just so over the top. And they know it, they're all like 'What in the goddamn fuck'.

Mr. Bungle 08-16-2011 09:55 AM

:(

Bullet Magnet 08-16-2011 10:32 AM

The Battle of the Citadel from Mass Effect is pretty darn awesome.

Spoilers!

Ridg3 08-16-2011 01:54 PM

Every time Sin attacks it's always an epic moment.

DarkHoodness 08-16-2011 01:54 PM

@ Abe16: Agreed with that, that's one of the few gaming moments I experienced which made me get a lump in my throat.

Manco 08-16-2011 02:16 PM

Aw shit, I have a playthrough of Okami I still need to finish. Thanks for reminding me.

Anyway, here's a personal moment that I think I've mentioned before:

On its own it's not much, but it's quite a sad moment when you realise this was the last Spyro game made by Insomniac, before the series took a major decline in quality.

Okami video

I loved Okami. The end was so huge. I thought it dragged on for a while, but once the momentum built up before the arc I couldn't put the controller down. The conversation with Issuin before they board the arc was sad.

abe619 08-17-2011 03:32 AM

yeah, i almost cried during that praise moment while playing.
Okami was so freaking awesome.
