Half Life 2

Should I get it? Haven't played number 1 yet. Is HL2 a follow-on from HL1 or is it a whole new story? I think my uncle has it ...

mr.odd 12-03-2010 03:48 PM

Get both Hl1 and 2.

scrabface 12-03-2010 03:48 PM

haven't played any of the two titles yet, but I think this should be in the Non-Oddworld game section. < --- lol big words for someone who just got an infraction

Mudokon_Master 12-03-2010 03:58 PM

Oh, sorry what was I thinking?... lol
And I'll have to buy HL1 because I don't think my uncle has that one.

Hazel-Rah 12-03-2010 04:15 PM

I never played either of them but they're supposed to be good, HL2 was voted like game of the decade. (I doubt that)

Manco 12-03-2010 04:37 PM

They're separate-yet-tangentially-related stories, so if you wanted to you could play one without the other.

They're both great games, though, so it's worth getting them both anyway.

Mudokon_Master 12-03-2010 04:48 PM

Thanks Hunter. I wouldn't be surprised if HL2 WAS voted game of the decade because I was watching a "Let's play" video of it and it seemed great.

Taco 12-03-2010 04:55 PM

Definately get both. It's worth it playing through both of them and they are somewhat related. If you don't want the 1998 graphics on HL1 you can get HL1: Source which is just a digitally remastered version of it. It's only about $10 on steam

Crashpunk 12-04-2010 02:05 AM

Half-Life 2 is one of the greatest games i've ever played. I just wish Valve stop fanning around with TF2 and Portal 2 and release HL2 Ep3!!!!

Just to let you know, I'm doing a Narrated Walkthrough of the game. try watching if you get stuck or are just interested in the gameplay.

I thought that HL: Source didn't really improve the graphics so much as it updated the physics engine to the Source engine?

dripik 12-04-2010 04:34 AM

The time when I first played HL1 was around 5 years ago or so, and I was still stunned by the game. It's not the graphics, but more of the general atmosphere of Black Mesa, the relatively basic but useable physics, and that how much you can get involved in the game (mainly due to lack of cutscenes where you would leave FP view, and the fact that Freeman does not utter a single word in the game).

You won't have trouble playing HL2 if you missed out the first game. There are only some mild references to the preceding events (the G-Man sums it up pretty well at the start anyway), most of the story could go well as a stand-alone plot.

This, seriously. I don't see why everyone is pooping it up about HL1, it's not a very good game.

Crashpunk 12-05-2010 06:37 AM

HL1 isn't that bad. it's graphics are terrible that's about it.

I wonder what happened to Black Mesa: Source?

lismati 12-05-2010 08:25 AM

Was there something like it? *googles it*

I'm sure we all agree you're wrong, but care to back this up?

Mr. Bungle 12-05-2010 01:00 PM

I'm not a fan of Half-life one either. I adore Half-life two, though. I can't explain why.

Chubfish 12-05-2010 01:11 PM

Half Life 1 is awesome, and still is, even if Half Life 2 was a huge step up.

Mr. Bungle 12-05-2010 03:04 PM

It is a very good game, I'm not denying that. I just don't like it.

I really hope that the fan-made remake is still in progress.

Bullet Magnet 12-06-2010 09:23 AM

It probably depends on when you played it. So many of the most ground-breaking games aren't very interesting to new players, because everything new and good they introduced have dispersed throughout the industry and become old hat. Seinfeld is Unfunny.

Jordan 12-06-2010 10:58 AM

I still want to play Half-Life 1. But I played Half-Life 2, and I highly recommend you get it, it's a brilliant game.

I dunno about that - my first time with Half-Life was just a few months ago, and I enjoyed the hell out of it.

I still need to finish of HL2, actually...

It annoys me when developers claim they have made ‘game of the year’. Game of the year by whom? There are thousands of game reviewers it’s not like one game is the official best-game-of-the-year. Or in this case- of the decade.

Manco 12-07-2010 02:49 AM

:

The game has won over 50 Game of the Year awards
[...]
GameSpot inducted Half-Life into their "Greatest Games of All Time" list in May 2007.[62] In 2004, GameSpy held a Title Fight, in which readers voted on what they thought was the "greatest game of all time", and Half-Life was the overall winner of the survey.[63] In the November 1999, October 2001, and April 2005 issues of PC Gamer, Half-Life was named "Best Game of All Time"/"Best PC Game Ever."
These are awards given to the game by various publications and websites, not just a reviewer deciding "hey let's pick this one".

Also that was probably a typo in your post, but the developers never claimed anything like that.

Nate 12-07-2010 03:27 AM

I think he may be talking about games that are rereleased by the developer in a GoTY edition.

This, seriously. I don't see why everyone is pooping it up about HL1, it's not a very good game.

All I'm saying that the plot of the two games don't really depend on eachother and thus HL2 can be enjoyed even without knowing HL1. I enjoyed playing HL1 back then, but upon completing the game twice, I don't really want to go through it once more in the near future.

Concerning graphics, I wasn't really bothered about it, mainly because I got to know classic CS before HL1, and back in the day, those graphics were awesome for me.

But really, good graphics is never a guarantee that you'll enjoy a game, unless you enjoy visuals more than gameplay. I'd choose the first two Doom games (probably Doom2, if I had to choose between the two - Super Shotgun ruled) over the third installment. They are all pretty much the same concept, all the way down to the "walking past wall, ligths go out, wall opens and demons ambush you" concept, but it was fast paced, enjoyable, and good if I wanted a brief game of shooting demons.

Crashpunk 12-08-2010 02:18 AM

Graphics usually don't bother me but HL1's did for some odd reason. but I can imagine they were great in the day.

Mudokon_Master 12-08-2010 10:24 PM

Has anyone played Fallout? I think maybe it was based upon HL? They're both the same type of game and I really enjoyed Fallout.

No they're not.

Neither of those things are true.

Mac Sirloin 12-09-2010 01:19 PM

Didn't Fallout 1 come out before Half Life 1?
