Official Oddworld Forums Fan Art Competition 2010!!!

Ladies and Gentlemen, welcome to the first annual (hopefully) Oddworld Forums Fan-Art Competition! That’s right, it’s a chance for you all to show off your art skills and have your hard, heart-felt labours torn apart by a bunch of savage, cruel judges!
Or something.

The theme for this competition is Fears!

What you’ve gotta do:
  1. Draw/paint/whatever a piece of art set in Oddworld and using the competition theme, Fears.
  2. You cannot attach images in PMs, so upload your piece to an image-hosting website (see the rules below)
  3. PM it to me!
  4. Sit back and wait for the results.

Anonymity is good!
The aim is for each entry to not be attributable to its artist; in other words, we don’t want the judges to know who drew/painted/etc. what until after the competition, just to avoid any accidental bias.
For this end, we have the following rules.
  1. Do not upload your picture using Oddworld Forums, Deviant Art or any other website that will easily link it to you. You can stick it on your Deviant Art page after the competition has been judged.
  2. Do not post your picture on the forums, or show it or describe it to anyone else online until after the competition has ended.

More rules:
  1. You must use official Oddworld species that have appeared in-game. So no unused creatures from the Art Book or fan-species. You may use creatures from any Oddworld game.
  2. You must create your picture specifically for this competition; do not submit anything that you have posted on the internet before.
  3. You must make some sort of use of the Fears theme, no matter how abstract.
  4. You can use any sort of medium for your drawing, but you may not trace any OWI art, or manipulate an existing picture. It must be entirely your own work.
  5. If you submit your piece, then edit it, you may resubmit it once, and only once. So make sure it's perfect the second time! (Better yet, make sure it's perfect the first time!)

You will be judged on:
  1. Quality: how good is your piece generally? (Your picture won’t be compared to anyone else’s for this, so if you do a pencil drawing you don’t have to worry about it looking second place to someone’s digital masterpiece)
  2. Oddness: How well does your picture capture the feel and look of Oddworld, its creatures and atmosphere?
  3. Originality and creativity: How original is your work, generally? Does it stand out from the rest?
  4. Use of theme: How creative is your use of the competition theme, Fears?
  5. Enjoyment: How much did the judges enjoy viewing your entry?

Each category will be marked out of 10, giving you a total mark of 50 per judge.

The closing date for this competition is Wednesday the 31st of March, 11:59, GMT. You must have submitted your entry by this time!

When the results from the judges are in, the pictures will be posted in Fan Corner along with the results, and the winner will be forever recognised in the Fan-Corner Competition Hall of Fame!

SO whaddaya waitin’ for? GET BACK TO WORK!

MeechMunchie 02-07-2010 06:53 AM

Ooh, might enter. My Photoshopping is glacial, so it'll just be sketch, but I do have an idea... I just hope we get as few entries as we did for the FanFic Comp. :D That way I might be in with a chance.

Ridg3 02-07-2010 11:47 AM

Oh my...can you have more than one entry, my, oh my.

Oddey 02-07-2010 11:55 AM

I draw like an armless penguin, but I do look forward to seeing the results.

I draw like Anna Ahmes Pengini, but I do look forward to seeing the results.

Ah Anna Ahmes Pengini, the famous Itallian artist

I'd like to enter this, hopefully I'll find the time for it

Splat 02-07-2010 12:31 PM

Only one entry per person. Sorry.

Dryadri 02-07-2010 11:05 PM

Ooh, I'll try and join, I have a few ideas  Whether or not I'll get it coloured on time though I don't know.

enchilado 02-08-2010 02:19 AM

At last, motivation for me to get the scanner working. Thanks Splat, it really needs doing.

STM 02-10-2010 08:26 AM

Grieva 02-10-2010 03:32 PM

ok, officially entering......now, is there any size/format considerations?

Splat 02-10-2010 03:35 PM

Not this year. Maybe I'll be wiser next year :p

enchilado 02-11-2010 12:01 AM

Ridg3 02-11-2010 01:02 AM

Forsake your homework, this is more important...you must win the respect of your peers!!

enchilado 02-11-2010 01:10 AM

Ah, the homework's done. It was some crap about hypotenuses and finding angles and so on, it's fairly easy really, it's Maths A (easiest level of Maths, apart from Prevocational, which is for people who totally FAIL at maths). I've never done Maths before, ever, in my life, but I'm finding it easy to understand once I've Wikipedia'd the terms I don't know, which is most of them, except hypotenuse.

So I worked it out, I understand it, pretty much, now - I can do it, anyway, that's the main thing. I'm thinking of changing to Maths B, actually, which is the hard level. There's also Maths C, which is for rocket scientists and whatever. But to do Maths C, I'd have to give up Drama, and I don't want to do that.

So... Maths B should provide me with an interesting challenge.

Enough nonsense. I'll do some drawing tonight, and hopefully it'll be finished by Monday...

okay, well, by the closing date, then.

Grieva 02-11-2010 04:02 AM

Wow, monday? you work fast ench

STM 02-11-2010 09:25 AM

Do I need to add colour? Don't like colour

Gretin 02-11-2010 12:48 PM

I think that question is pretty much answered here:

:

You will be judged on:
Quality: how good is your piece generally? (Your picture won’t be compared to anyone else’s for this, so if you do a pencil drawing you don’t have to worry about it looking second place to someone’s digital masterpiece)

Use of theme: How creative is your use of the competition theme, Fears?
Enjoyment: How much did the judges enjoy viewing your entry?

Splat 02-11-2010 02:34 PM

And remember you're not exactly rushed for time, so you might want to hold back a while and see if there's anything else you can improve on it before you PM it to me.

Or not. Up to you :p

Grieva 02-11-2010 03:10 PM

can we not resubmit if we do want to put in some touch-ups after submitting early?

Splat 02-11-2010 03:47 PM

I don't want people to go wild with resubmissions cus it will only make things harder for me!

I'll say you can only resubmit once.

So to clarify, if you send me your piece and then decide it could be better, you can edit it and send it to me a second time. But you cannot send it to me more than twice; I will accept the second submission only.

AlexFili 02-12-2010 02:26 AM

I'll try and enter this contest if I can :D

enchilado 02-13-2010 04:48 PM

Grieva: As to the Monday, I haven't done any more since I posted that, so it won't be; but if I'd bothered, well, yeah, Monday. It's just a pencil sketch and was the major foreground objects were already done, it just needed a background.

It actually sucks pretty bad, because I'm a terrible artist, but I figured I'd do it anyway. I'm not home at the moment, but I'll be back about three this afternoon, and then I'll be playing badminton... ah... I'll do some tonight, anyway, and more tomorrow.

I just can't think of how to draw the background :\

I just can't think of how to draw the background :\

I suck horribly at backgrounds as well so I'm going to focus on the main picture and then do a really abstract background.

slig# 5719 02-24-2010 11:50 AM

A month and a week till deadline...

Sure, i'll give it a shot :) just whipped up a quick practice sketch.

enchilado 02-24-2010 11:55 AM

Will you believe me if I tell you I forgot about this?

Splat 02-25-2010 03:26 AM

Will you believe me if I told you I forgot about this?

I guess I got really worked up with the fiction competition 'cus no one sent me anything 'til really close to the deadline, but since I'm expecting that now, I let it slip to the back of my mind. I mean, I'll wake up when people start sending me their entries.

MeechMunchie 02-25-2010 10:17 AM

AAAH I'm running out of time! Srsly, I keep having to do work instead of drawing.

Ridg3 02-26-2010 10:42 AM

What's the prize, you know, as a added incentive? Can we be Mod for day pl0x?

Splat 02-26-2010 01:25 PM

Uh, the power to give that does not rest with me, and I doubt I'd be able to argue your case with the powers that be. Mainly it's just the prestige of being the Best Artist To Enter This Competition On The First Ever Year It Ran Huzzah, and the associated bragging rights.

enchilado 02-26-2010 02:00 PM

I'm guessing I won't win if I don't abide the theme?
