A Paragraph from Lorne, On the Topic of: Physical Video Gaming
Lorne Lanning, founder and creative director of Oddworld Inhabitants, also cautions that building games for these novel devices involves huge risk for developers. "It's risky to develop software specifically targeting such hardware. You isolate your title to that base while sacrificing all other platforms," Lanning says. Even so, he doesn't doubt that the future of gaming will involve such novel interactions. "These devices are early indicators for what's to come with their spacial depth-sensing and voice-recognition potential. It's only a matter of time before such interfaces become the de facto means of engagement for interactive entertainment."
http://www.forbes.com/2009/06/30/mot...ech-natal.html Not much but it is reasureing that Lorne (and OWI for that matter) still lives. IMO: Fuck Wii. Fuck eyetoy. Focus on Graphics, leave interactive gaming for the future |

Because the Wii is the worst 7gen console ATM. It sacrificed good graphics for what? a controller that requires you to swing around. Have you ever tried playing an FPS on a Wii?
|
Metroid Prime 3 is a great game.

The Genesis was for bad people.

Who cares about graphics? I mean really? I play games for interacting with a digital world. Not to stare at 3D jiggling, physics-defying, boobs. I mean nice graphics are a plus, but should not be the main focus when it comes to games. The focus should be game play.
If you're so gung-ho about graphics go watch a movie. Also if we don't work on interactive gaming now how are we suppose to progress? If people didn't work on games back in the day just cus it was so simplistic we wouldn't have all the awesome NES classics. Which, by the way, had terrible graphics but were still fun. If you don't like the Wii or DS go play on something else. No one is forcing you to play it. |
I find it awesome how Lorne is getting his say in more things nowadays. It's nice to hear from him every now and then.

Old games for Sega Mega Drive and Playstation One were great without good graphics, but that was then, the games were much different (graphics and just the whole games) then than they are now. Nowadays to be fully immersed in a game it needs to be as realistic as possible in one way or another and graphics are a major part of the game industry, proberbly why OWI made MO 3D instead of 2D. I agree with Moxco when it comes to the whole interactivity stuff, what's wrong with a standard controler? I will be using them until their not made anymore. EDIT: Venks, your right about progression, but as long as they give users a choice of pad or some next way of control it's cush. |

The Game industry is truly reaching its peak as the casual crowd are finally beginning to choose games as their main form of entertainment. Also just because the Wii's main focus is casual players over the original game fans that doesn't mean all of its games are shareware. I think its a little silly to say a game has to be realistic or have good graphics to be immersed in it. 'Realistic' games tend to be full of gritty colors, bland characters(personality wise and appearance), and all of them have those completely unrealistic rag-doll physics. I have yet to ever fall like a rag-doll I just don't get it. I can play Ghosts n Goblins right now and be completely lost in its awesomeness. While the new Ghost Busters game(including the Wii version) with its awesome graphics frustrates me with its stupid AI and crazy controls. Too many kids today grow up playing games like Gears of War or Assassin's Creed. I have nothing against this its just they then have no appreciation for older games. Thinking them bad just because the graphics are not up to par. Zelda: A Link To The Past is still my favorite Zelda game. And Bomberman is just as enjoyable be it the XBLA version or a old SNES copy. Sigh. I do my best to show any youngins the error of their ways, but you can only save those willing to try. PS: Super Smash Bros Brawl is awesome. It's the only game I've played consistently for over a year. Sure I still play Earthbound or ActRaiser II now and then and have played every Poke'mon game since I was 10, but I don't play those every other day. |
I agree with all the intelligent people here.
|
What I find with Wii is, they should let you choose between a pad or "stick", like you say, not everyone has hundreds of pounds to spend on a game console, also personaly, I think the games are pretty rubbish (the Wii exclusive stuff) but each to there own. PC is the way to go anyway :P
|
To be honest... that's what the Wii is there for. To provide a different method of gaming, and to aim for a different audience than other consoles. I can hardly see them giving players the choice between a Wii remote or a standard controller. They do it for some games, like SSBB, but you don't often get games like that. :p The Wii now is used by families that like to do stuff together. And the majority of games released for the Wii are designed to be played by large groups of people, and I can't see it changing.
I'd like for the Wii to be a console that uses normal controllers, but as Venks said, it's basically a GameCube++, and if they focused more on gamepads, it wouldn't interest anyone enough, because it would simply be a rehash of the previous console. |
Good graphics are nice, but they arn't the be all and end all.
The Wii is one of those things; it is a unique entertainment system, which is what compensates for it's non - next gen graphics. |
:
you know screw consoles wars, all i know is that Graphics isn't everything, Can't wait for Wii sports resort! :
|
I have to go with PC too (As long as the game is Xbox360 controller compatible).
|
I don't have an Xbox pad for PC but I have a PS2 "like" pad thats great.
But you know, keyboard and mouse are still extreamly good control devices. I played the whole of Bioshock with keyboard and mouse, and it was so much better than on Xbox. |
If the Wii is so bad, why are Microsoft and Sony both working on new control methods which dont involve gamepads?
|
if they are gonna make a game , i wish they make it like star wars the force unleashed which is basically released for all platforms with unique features for each version , like high end platforms like pc , ps3 , X360 should have better graphics than wii and low end systems version but both high and low end systems should support physics especially ragdoll physics.
it would be great if they add support for neurosky in the pc version. |
Holy crap the op sucks.
"Leave it to the future"? If we keep leaving it to the future, when's it going to happen? Moron. Project Natal motherfuckers, it's most definitely the way forward. All of you little boys are just scared of change. |
You know...and this is just my opinion, but...to me, one of the main things that separates gaming from real life, as it were, is that you DON'T have to run around, swing your arms, shout things etc. I don't know if physical gaming is even such a great idea on the whole, except perhaps for excersise purposes like the Wii Fit. Just my opinion, anyway. Although...combining voice recognition with Gamespeak in a future Oddworld game could be fun, couldn't it...?

In my opinion, physical and "classic" gaming both have their own advantages and disadvantages. Physical gaming allows you to really feet the experience. What storytellers might want to do is to further blur the line between fiction and reality. It all began with oral storytelling and cave art. Later books were invented, where you could combine art and literature. After that were movies and TV, which could show, instead of tell. Now, gaming allows you to "experience" it. Physical gaming is another step toward making the experience as realistic as possible. If you want to really feel like the main character, then motion controls are the perfect option.
Still, there are other reasons gaming exists. One of them is the fact that you can blow stuff up and shoot people without the risks of the enemy killing you, or getting in trouble with the law. Many of the things you can do in modern games would be very risky to do in real life. Of course, physical gaming wouldn't get you in jail. But then, those crazy politicians would say that kids started having a "mean attitude" after getting used to "violent gestures" in the games. I'm sure the gaming community is tired of this pointless whining about video game violence. Now, gaming isn't just about storytelling and experiencing fiction. It is also about competition. In fact, the first games, such as Pong, didn't even have a story. Many of the modern games also focus on multiplayer rather than the single-player story mode. Now, the way to become a competitive gamer is to learn how to use a controller properly. Most of the current hardcore gamers have used a classic controller for years. Motion controls still use buttons, but if they dominate gaming, there is a chance that the buttons will completely disappear, and be replaced by "special gestures"/voice commands. And if that happens, I bet some long-time gamers are going to get really pissed off. In conclusion, motion controls will appeal to casual gamers, and classic controls will appeal to hardcore gamers. But I think a console developer shouldn't focus on casual or hardcore gamers. I think they should focus on both. This is why physical gaming should continue to evolve, but not dominate classic gaming. Now, I think I should also answer what abe619 said about each version of the next Oddworld game having unique features. Which I disagree with. No matter which version you would have, you would still be missing out on something. The only way out would be to waste over $600 to buy all the current consoles. Think about it. Paying over $600 just for one game. Doesn't sound like a very good idea to me. |
You did it again.

yep, didn't read all that. i might give it a bash later.
but don't let us knock you. |
I don't know about him, but if I see another wall of text I will begin knocking.
This is how to write long posts. :

maybe all 3 should be mixed. |
