What Would You Build?

I want this so much!

It's a 3d printer that can produce just about any object you are able to model in a CAD program. It builds them out of the same sort of plastic from which Lego is made. And this one, which comes as a kit you assemble, costs only $750US. Considering that the cheapest one I've heard of before this cost more than $10,000US, that's amazing.

That said... I don't actually know what I'd make with it. Probably just little toys and knicknacks. I'd probably also start working on more robotty projects when I knew I could make any gear or unique part I liked.

So, my question is, what would you build with your own 3d printer?

EDIT: the same company is building a 3d scanner kit, so you could scan any object and reproduce it. Starting with my wang.

Ur Mom. :tard:

Havoc 06-15-2009 02:29 AM

You know it's coming so I'll get it out of the way. A dildo... just because I could.

Laser 06-15-2009 02:31 AM

I have just thought of one!

The statue of David!

Damn that would look good

BlackVenom 06-15-2009 02:34 AM

A replica of a gun. rob some places! xD "I didn't go to any fuel stations lately" >.>

Nate 06-15-2009 02:43 AM

All of the above are things you could purchase for very little cash on ebay. Try thinking a bit more imaginatively.

Although buying a dildo on ebay would probably not be all that good an idea

Laser 06-15-2009 02:44 AM

Jupiter.

Is that ok?

BlackVenom 06-15-2009 02:46 AM

the Q1. (only aussies would know this) It would make an awesome 1/48 model in my room or on the bar in the lounge room! O.o

Anonyman! 06-15-2009 05:10 AM

Chess pieces. Random sculptures I'd put everywhere.

Even then, I doubt most Australians outside of Queensland know what Q1 refers to other than 'that tall building at Surfers'.

Alcar...

Any architectural ideas I get. Domes, bridges, sky scrapers. Sculptures too. And, for no apparant reason, giant words.

Alcar...

Yes. I didn't even know it could refer to 'that tall building at Surfers'.

But what else does it refer to?

Or am I getting caught out by grammatical vagueness?

BlackVenom 06-15-2009 05:49 AM

I only meant by the building, I thought other people outside of Queensland knew about, Or at least remember it... Eh, It still would be sweet having a realistically detailed model of the whole building.

Nate 06-15-2009 06:15 AM

I've been to Queensland once in the last decade and that was before the Q1 building was finished.

Would you recognise the Eureka Tower if it fell on you?

OddjobAbe 06-15-2009 07:02 AM

I would build my own minature Dalek. I would look at it, point and say "I made that!".

It's unbelievable how well technology's coming on. It's really excellent what they can do now.

Oddey 06-15-2009 07:07 AM

I think I'd make a miniature city. Then I could make little guys and street lamps to go with it. I'll never get this though, because I know I'll just screw it up and only use it so much.

And then since It's made out of the same plastic that Lego is built out of, I might make my own little bits and bobs for it.:D

Probably not... xD

Just saying, it would be interesting to have...

Laser 06-15-2009 07:16 AM

The Venus De Milo!

That would be cool

Oddsville 06-15-2009 09:57 AM

I would slowly piece by piece build another me and just leave him at work; along with other places I'd rather not be.

Xavier 06-15-2009 10:12 AM

I like Anonyman!'s idea, I'd make some bizarre statues and put them everywhere in my home, as part of the decoration.

How much do the base material cost?

MA 06-15-2009 11:28 AM

sounds daft but i'd make loads of dice.

i'm always losing the ones i've got, seeing as i sometimes like to play a few board games.

Slog Bait 06-15-2009 12:31 PM

I'd made tiny models of all my creations.

Yes.

I'd do this across my entire house/room. Build little pipes into the ridges along the walls, piece together a small inclinator for stairs, use a system of motors and tracks to create the illusion of people walking around, and see if adding a flammable liquid into the lego-plastic mix is possible.
After igniting a portion of the 'city' a jury-rigged fire-alarm system will speed up all of the motors and small poles will raise the small people's hands as they go by, making them appear to be panicking. The fire will be controlled, but 'guided' to the inclinator, where all of the people will have grouped to escape. The fire will burn through the inclinator's support wires and drive belt and it will crash, trapping all of the people inside and incinerating them.

Also, if you're into DnD or Warhammer or anything else like that, you could make some inexpensive minis. Saves you a ridiculous amount. Of course, I doubt any official Games Workshop store will allow that nonsense in their tourneys.

shaman 06-15-2009 03:04 PM

I would make a tiny version of my friends car, and switch his real car with the model while he sleeps.

I'm an asshole like that.

Depending on colour, between $30 and $60US for five pounds, though at this time the colour options are black, white and translucent white.

The link in my first post goes to the company's website and their store.

moxco 06-15-2009 09:23 PM

I'd make a replica of a PS3 and then try selling it.

Fucking SP and their fucking show off beaches.

For the short amount of time I played, I saw, bricks, tins, and army men used.

You're going to have to make an AC plug and Video cables, too, as well as put in something to weigh it down.

Unless you're selling it on the internet.

For DnD? Yeah. But Warhammer only allows the actual minis in their official games I believe.
