Why Oddworld’s Return Will Breathe New Life Into The Gaming Industry

It's a nice sum up of the last few years' info about what OWI's doing:

That is an extremely painful article to read. Aside from the breathless fanboy tone with which it's written, the random bolding of certain phrases is really annoying.

Still, it's nice to know someone still cares about Oddworld.

LIJI 05-31-2009 05:17 AM

A Microsoft console? Not again! :(

Xavier 05-31-2009 07:26 AM

Nothing has been announced about what platform they are developing on. But my guess is the PC.

Also I have no idea why he says an announcement is only days away... we have nothing to actually suggest that.

Fuzzle Guy 05-31-2009 08:46 AM

Trying to big up Oddworld by mentioning MO? Surely AO or AE would have been a better choice...

i was also thinking the same

Terrible article.

God Bless You All

mr.odd 05-31-2009 09:51 AM

they probably mentioned MO and SW because they were 3D and for the Xbox.

so they are working on an oddworld related game. i wonder when we can expect to see that.

AlexFili 05-31-2009 10:38 AM

The only thing they would have to do with Microsoft is probably the release of MO and SW on Steam. If they are really serious about digital distribution, we are more likely to see something on PSN, Xbox Arcade or WiiWare. Or all three!

personally im glad oddworld went for Xbox, alough i wasnt when i didnt have one. But they should bring it out on Arcade, i'd buy it.

WiiWare

Despite having a Wii (And loving it!) I can't see an Oddworld game on that console. The Wii has put less focus on graphics in favor of unique gameplay, however the Oddworld series have a pretty high standard of graphics.

The fact that E3 2009 is only days away?

Oddey 05-31-2009 12:53 PM

I think days away may be a bit of an exaggerative statement. But who knows. Maybe it is really days away.

Whatever the case, this article, true or not, has increased my hopes about oddworld.

Regardless, one thing is clear, we are only days away from an official unveiling.
A man can dream.

Venks 05-31-2009 06:44 PM

Oh wow that makes me so happy. My bet is their game will be multi-platform. If they can't manage that then it will be Xbox 360.
I can't believe I missed the Gamasutra update they listed. I've been frequenting that site like a confused teenager frequents bad decisions.

skillya_glowi 05-31-2009 07:37 PM

I'm very glad Oddworld's alive and well. I had a feeling all along that, if ever, it would be a really long time before Lorne abandoned Oddworld (or at least stopped trying to publically manifest it) and that he's still interesting in doing what he was at the start --- making games (or movies) that have integrity, depth, and unique, relatable characters.

And just for being an Oddworld fan I won't bash the author of the article for his writing skills.

Nate 05-31-2009 09:14 PM

Venks: given Lorne's recently expressed opinions, it's unlikely they'll be developing retail boxed games for consoles. At the outside edge of possibility is console download stores but Steam is much more likely given that Lorne has repeatedly said how much he like that system and that it does not limit the number of potential customers in the way that choosing one particular console does.

Northgore 05-31-2009 10:01 PM

Well E3 starts on June 2nd but today will be MS Conference and then Sony/Nintendo on Tuesday.. E3 lasts for about 3 or 4 days I believe... June 2nd - June 5th.... Cannot wait...

Yeah really, I liked both Xbox games dearly, but I don't think anyone can argue that AO and AE are the best games in the series.

Wow this is some unexpected news though.

Nate 05-31-2009 10:13 PM

Don't get your hopes up.

I know how he loves digital distribution, but I just can't see any Oddworld games being exclusive to Steam. OWI has since the very start been trying to reach the widest audience possible. I think it would be much more difficult to advertise for a game on Steam then it would be for a 360 title. I mean the biggest pool of gamers that could receive the type of minimum content I'm expecting from OWI would have to be console casuals. As casuals vastly out number the hardcore players and most of them don't use Steam.

I can see marketing a XBLA game so much easier then I could Steam. Perhaps that will change in a few years or I'm currently perceiving something wrong. OWI has always tried to reach every platform and get the best advertisement they can. That doesn't mean they accomplished what they tried to do, but I still carry my faith.

I just wish Citizen Siege was out already. I've been telling people about the movie for years and it still isn't out yet. I hope my expectations aren't so high that I end up not enjoying it. Its just every time I distrust a move from OWI I realize how wrong I was to judge them negatively beforehand. Therefor now I expect nothing short of the best movie I've seen so far in my life.

I dispute this fact. I check out Steam on a regular basis and at least a third of games advertised are for the casual market. I can't compare to XBLA because I've never used it but I've always seen Steam as a very effective way of marketing a game. I regularly take a look at game websites/demos based solely on a listing on Steam.

I'm sure Call of Juarez was a great game by those standards.

XBLA might not be the target demographic or what Lorne wants, but it's the most practical download platform apart form Steam. Nothing else can compete with it.

Offering a deal for both games for 1400-1600 MS points would be just as effective as the Steam re-release except not nearly as many Xbox players will think "I can just torrent this.". If they advertise it properly, particularly most of the gory bits, they could turn some serious green.

Xavier 06-03-2009 10:25 PM

I think we all agree that the first 2 games would be awesome on XBLA.

But for Lorne's next project I'm pretty sure it won't be on XBLA, sounds a bit too complex. But hey we never know.

Leto 06-03-2009 10:30 PM

He developed both Oddworld Munch’s Odyssey and Oddworld Stranger’s Wrath for the original Xbox, which were considered to be two of the best games on that platform.

Munch’s Odyssey was one of the best adventure platformers in the last decade,

...hahaha

I wouldn't care if his next project wasn't, but AO and AE just makes so much damn sense.

stonetooth 07-12-2009 12:42 PM

LETS ALL THROW A ODDWORLD PARTY!!!!! WOOT! And E3 Live is going to be on July 25, and I plan to watch it. Perhaps that IS what they were meaning by days away. And I doubt they are going to release AO and AE for arcade. You lazy bastards can all just whip out your ps2's and take out the ps1 games and play it like that. :/
I hope the game they are releasing won't be restricted to only one console, because if that one console is going to be PS3, i'm fucked.

Xavier 07-13-2009 01:19 AM

What are you talking about? There was absolutely no announcement made by OWI at this year's E3.

GlukkonGluk 07-14-2009 12:22 PM

Good Lord. Oddworld Inhabitants? Actually making a game? Goodness gracious me, that takes me back a few years...doesn't time fly when you're waiting impatiently with no news?
