Microsoft Windows 8

MOD EDIT: This thread was split off from the What does your desktop look like? (V4) thread here.

Crashpunk 11-15-2012 03:19 PM

How is Windows 8?

I've only heard bad things.

Vyrien 11-15-2012 03:33 PM

My friend had it and formatted back to Windows 7 within the week, apparently it's just horrible on anything non-touchscreen.

I've heard people say that as well but I'm not sure why. I imagine it would be nicer with a touchscreen, but it's just as easy to use with a mouse as anything else is.

Phylum 11-15-2012 07:36 PM

The interface actually seems really well designed and works brilliantly on a tablet.

It's a pity they're moving away from the desktop, but they're doing it in a clever way.

I still like the desktop UI for now and I'm completely against the App Store setup, so I'm sticking with 7 for now.

Nepsotic 11-15-2012 10:26 PM

MOD EDIT: Just a reminder that this was originally in the What does your desktop look like? (V4) thread. Nep wasn't being gratuitous.

I was going to give it a try, but after all the bad things I've heard about it, no chance, I'm sticking with my precious desktop.

Huh? What do you think would happen to it?

Nepsotic 11-16-2012 06:45 AM

As in, I'd still like to have a desktop, I don't want to have a tablet as a PC, which is essentially what Windows 8 is.

Manco 11-16-2012 09:19 AM

God forbid things change.

You still have a desktop with Windows 8, the only thing that changed was how you access news, applications and whatnot, which you can use the Metro UI. That's all.

EDIT: Here

Might not be the best explanation, but it's there.

Nepsotic 11-16-2012 01:40 PM

Nah, I don't like it. It's like an OS for children. I guess I'd have to play around with it proper to get a better understanding, but from what I've seen, to me it looks bad.

Varrok 11-16-2012 01:44 PM

I agree with the pony lover up there. I still don't have a single reason why I should bother paying money for Windows 8.

Crashpunk 11-16-2012 01:50 PM

Yeah I wouldn't like to use it. I'm just so used to the Windows Vista/7 desktop

God forbid things change.

Only if the change is shit. Which Windows 8 definitely looks like and I don't care how many good reviews it gets. It looks all Androidey and shit and not what PC are meant to look like.

Be like us losers and stop embracing change. It's scary, man.

Phylum 11-16-2012 02:44 PM

Win 8 still has a desktop, but isn't the idea that they're phasing out support for it? Or is that just some crazy rumour?

No. The idea is that the desktop is there for people who need it and the Metro/whatever interface is there for people who need it.

From what I've read, Win8 is useable by people without touchscreens, but all the significant OS improvements are in the Metro/whatever interface, so there's no real point in upgrading if you're happy with Win7.

Having said that...

You can't make that sort of claim based on 'looks like'. It really annoys me all the whiny bitches who complain about Win8 changing things - or, equivalently, Facebook changing things - without trying them. Give it a month or two and most of them won't want to go back to the old interface.

Manco 11-16-2012 04:45 PM

I'll also add that equating the Metro style to Android is hilariously wrong.

I think Windows 8 is going to create a massive shift on how people approach computers. Integrating smartphone/tablet-style "download and go" apps is an interesting idea which could, if successful, change how we think of and work with operating systems and applications drastically. And having such a huge market contender embracing modern interfaces and app distribution methods is big.

I can only hope that people realise that the status quo doesn't have to be the be-all-end-all.

If a man is down a dark alleyway at night looking like a rapist, then he probably is a rapist. I'm just saying that it looks mighty poo, if that makes me a whiny bitch then so be it. But I can be whinier and bitchier *z-snap*

enchilado 11-17-2012 03:22 AM

I think Windows 8 looks amazing.

Have you seen the new Blue Screen of Death?

Varrok 11-17-2012 03:57 AM

I can't believe it. Is it real?

Vyrien 11-17-2012 04:11 AM

From what I can find, yes.

Sorry, but I had to.

MeechMunchie 11-17-2012 04:24 AM

Good luck writing down that error code in 1 second.

Manco 11-17-2012 05:17 AM

Yes, because the old blue screen of death was far more useful and nicer looking

oh wait

Varrok 11-17-2012 05:44 AM

At least it *seemed* smart.

Phylum 11-17-2012 12:37 PM

You guys are all change hating faggots. Especially Steamer.

I think that's cute and it just spells out what you have to Google. It's not like the memory addresses were actually useful, either. I bet this one is even readable on widescreen monitors, too.

Varrok 11-17-2012 12:43 PM

Imagine you were doing something very important, and then your OS fucked something up and you lost everything. I believe cute images would only piss you more.

But there's something worse than that. My windows/xbox live account was broken and every time I try to login, the following text appears:
"Oh no... this should not have happened"
And it'd be ok, if there wasn't this guy there:
https://live.xbox.com/Shell/images/500Avatar.png
He's looking at you, like he's saying: "Oh, your account is broken beyond repair? That's sad :)"

Vyrien 11-17-2012 01:08 PM

It isn't so much the lack of text and simplified layout as the huge sadface emoticon that dominates the screen. I actually like Windows 8 on tablets, which is where it belongs, it just reminds me of how the Xbox interface became too geared towards Kinect users.

Woooow That big smilie would actually piss me off more then a big bunch of error messages.

Mr. Bungle 11-17-2012 01:51 PM

It's just not the same.

MeechMunchie 11-17-2012 02:43 PM

I'm with Varrok. You don't want cutsified interfaces for solving serious problems. They don't have circus clowns taking 999* calls. Because that's clearly the same thing.

*or 911, 112, or 0118999881999119725 3.

STM 11-17-2012 05:17 PM

I really like that actually. But then I really embrace the advancement of technology. Windows 8 looks like a step towards a simpler and more modern UI, after the mishap that was Vista it's applauded, at least by me. I don't see what the problem is, you don't even have to use that start thing if you don't want to. I thought it was all available from that new screen, was a little disappointed it still had the old desktop.

after the mishap that was Vista

Why was Vista a mishap, I just don't get this.

Sekto Springs 11-17-2012 06:12 PM

In lieu of the resounding flaws of recent operating systems, I've almost totally forgotten what was actually wrong with Vista. Like, I'm running Vista on one of my older machines, and it's given me less shit than the freshly installed W7 I just put on my new one.

Phylum 11-17-2012 07:53 PM

According to legend Vista SP1 fixed most of the problems and everyone forgot what they were.

With everything I've said here I need to mention that I love Win8 as a tabled OS. I can't see myself migrating to that kind of interface on a desktop yet. I want to see what other people can do with it before I really decide if I'm defecting to Linux in the near future.

Nate 11-17-2012 08:12 PM

The issues with Vista were 95% bad driver and application support and 5% confusing security settings. The former have all been ironed out by now.

Vyrien 11-18-2012 03:39 AM

I'm still running Vista on my laptop. The only major difference that I can find between Windows 7 and Vista is the lack of a taskbar.

Before SP1 though, it was utter shit, it wouldn't connect to the internet because there wasn't a driver for my wireless net card built into it, I had to plug it into the Ethernet instead to download SP1 so I could connect wirelessly.

Jordan 11-18-2012 05:56 AM

Not particularly interested. Looks pretty but I really like Windows 7 so I'm sticking with it for now.

STM 11-18-2012 06:26 AM

Actually this is true, the problems with Vista were fixed eventually, I distinctly remember the original release not being as good as XP or 7. I think my favourite release was 95 or perhaps 98, but those are purely for nostalgia related reasons.
