Microsoft Windows 8
|
How is Windows 8?
I've only heard bad things. |
My friend had it and formatted back to Windows 7 within the week, apparently it's just horrible on anything non-touchscreen.

The interface actually seems really well designed and works brilliantly on a tablet.
It's a pity they're moving away from the desktop, but they're doing it in a clever way. I still like the desktop UI for now and I'm completely against the App Store setup, so I'm sticking with 7 for now. |
MOD EDIT: Just a reminder that this was originally in the What does your desktop look like? (V4) thread. Nep wasn't being gratuitous.
I was going to give it a try, but after all the bad things I've heard about it, no chance, I'm sticking with my precious desktop. http://i1188.photobucket.com/albums/...ic/desktop.jpg |

As in, I'd still like to have a desktop, I don't want to have a tablet as a PC, which is essentially what Windows 8 is.
|
God forbid things change.
|
:
EDIT: Here Might not be the best explanation, but it's there. |
Nah, I don't like it. It's like an OS for children. I guess I'd have to play around with it proper to get a better understanding, but from what I've seen, to me it looks bad.
|
I agree with the pony lover up there. I still don't have a single reason why I should bother paying money for Windows 8.
|
Yeah I wouldn't like to use it. I'm just so used to the Windows Vista/7 desktop

Be like us losers and stop embracing change. It's scary, man. |
Win 8 still has a desktop, but isn't the idea that they're phasing out support for it? Or is that just some crazy rumour?
|
:
From what I've read, Win8 is useable by people without touchscreens, but all the significant OS improvements are in the Metro/whatever interface, so there's no real point in upgrading if you're happy with Win7. Having said that... :
|
I'll also add that equating the Metro style to Android is hilariously wrong.
I think Windows 8 is going to create a massive shift on how people approach computers. Integrating smartphone/tablet-style "download and go" apps is an interesting idea which could, if successful, change how we think of and work with operating systems and applications drastically. And having such a huge market contender embracing modern interfaces and app distribution methods is big. I can only hope that people realise that the status quo doesn't have to be the be-all-end-all. |

I think Windows 8 looks amazing.

I can't believe it. Is it real?

:
Sorry, but I had to. |
Good luck writing down that error code in 1 second.
|
Yes, because the old blue screen of death was far more useful and nicer looking
oh wait |
At least it *seemed* smart.
|
You guys are all change hating faggots. Especially Steamer.
I think that's cute and it just spells out what you have to Google. It's not like the memory addresses were actually useful, either. I bet this one is even readable on widescreen monitors, too. |
Imagine you were doing something very important, and then your OS fucked something up and you lost everything. I believe cute images would only piss you more.
But there's something worse than that. My windows/xbox live account was broken and every time I try to login, the following text appears: "Oh no... this should not have happened" And it'd be ok, if there wasn't this guy there: https://live.xbox.com/Shell/images/500Avatar.png He's looking at you, like he's saying: "Oh, your account is broken beyond repair? That's sad :)" |
It isn't so much the lack of text and simplified layout as the huge sadface emoticon that dominates the screen. I actually like Windows 8 on tablets, which is where it belongs, it just reminds me of how the Xbox interface became too geared towards Kinect users.

It's just not the same.
|
I'm with Varrok. You don't want cutsified interfaces for solving serious problems. They don't have circus clowns taking 999* calls. Because that's clearly the same thing.

I really like that actually. But then I really embrace the advancement of technology. Windows 8 looks like a step towards a simpler and more modern UI, after the mishap that was Vista it's applauded, at least by me. I don't see what the problem is, you don't even have to use that start thing if you don't want to. I thought it was all available from that new screen, was a little disappointed it still had the old desktop.

In lieu of the resounding flaws of recent operating systems, I've almost totally forgotten what was actually wrong with Vista. Like, I'm running Vista on one of my older machines, and it's given me less shit than the freshly installed W7 I just put on my new one.
|
According to legend Vista SP1 fixed most of the problems and everyone forgot what they were.
With everything I've said here I need to mention that I love Win8 as a tabled OS. I can't see myself migrating to that kind of interface on a desktop yet. I want to see what other people can do with it before I really decide if I'm defecting to Linux in the near future. |
The issues with Vista were 95% bad driver and application support and 5% confusing security settings. The former have all been ironed out by now.
|
I'm still running Vista on my laptop. The only major difference that I can find between Windows 7 and Vista is the lack of a taskbar.
Before SP1 though, it was utter shit, it wouldn't connect to the internet because there wasn't a driver for my wireless net card built into it, I had to plug it into the Ethernet instead to download SP1 so I could connect wirelessly. |
Not particularly interested. Looks pretty but I really like Windows 7 so I'm sticking with it for now.
|
Actually this is true, the problems with Vista were fixed eventually, I distinctly remember the original release not being as good as XP or 7. I think my favourite release was 95 or perhaps 98, but those are purely for nostalgia related reasons.
