Slig Barracks

Ok, this is how it seems to me, and correct me if anything sounds wrong, but...

the slig barracks is built in a large bowl or crater, with a luminescent lake at the bottom that might be caused by toxic waste?
Theres a wall round the whole place that might run along the bowls edge and theres also another wall separating the tents area from a smaller section with the station and a large building that might be Dripik's HQ,
And outside its just wasteland and smaller craters and guard towers dotted around

does that all sound believable?

OddjobAbe 12-05-2009 11:19 AM

No, as there is no such thing as Oddworld. It does, however, sound plausible.

MeechMunchie 12-05-2009 11:30 AM

Sure, why not. Oddworld has worms that can swallow things 40 times their own size. (Technically possible if they had really stretchy but strong muscles around their stomach that could crush things as they consumed them)

Taco 12-05-2009 01:10 PM

Yeah it sounds reasonable, but I'm not sure about the wall. There might just be buildings all over the place in an unorganised fashion

Wil 12-05-2009 02:48 PM

Actually, the Slig Barracks are a floating facility, just like Vykkers Labs. Dripik used the technology to make sure he was high above any danger that might befall him. He's a coward like that. The green gasses in the sky you can see are actually the exhaust fumes.

AlexFili 12-05-2009 02:50 PM

Fleeches can eat Sligs too right? pants 'n all?

is there any pics of it? i was basing some of that stuff on the second part of block 4 where it looks like you go outside barracks, and that the art book says its all temporary structure on temporary structure, you got any more information on it?

used:) 12-05-2009 04:46 PM

Max is such a.......what's the word I'm looking for?

Perhaps the depths of it are swamp-like as a result form all the pipes or to better accomodate the Sligs (they originated in swamps).

Taco 12-05-2009 06:34 PM

For some reason I always imagined the slig barracks to be in a barren area full of high cliffs and industrial facilities, with pipes running down the side of those cliffs.

Yes of course. but i'm guessing thats rarely happens

Taco 12-06-2009 01:08 AM

Well if Fleeches can fit a whole scrab in there... they could probably swallow a greeter

Grieva 12-06-2009 01:10 AM

I doubt they'd want to though, not a whole lotta meat on em

Crashpunk 12-06-2009 01:16 AM

I'm guessing Fleeches would die if they ate a Greeter. what with the electricy and Metal.

Anyway i've always wanted to know. If Slig Barracks is on floating facility
What is Feeco and Bonewerks on?

I guessing my some of screens in Abe's Exoddus Bonewerks is in the Desert.

Taco 12-06-2009 01:47 AM

Feeco seems to be a large metallic building build on some rocky area. judging by this...

But that's just my interpretation of it

Assuming that means what I think it does :p, then yeah I agree with ya, FeeCo's definatly on the ground in the train FMVs anyway.
On the train to Boneworkz it looks like it goes through some Slig Barracks scenery which is odd

Nate 12-06-2009 02:48 AM

How do you imagine the Feeco train gets to a floating facility?

Must be the same as whatever is behing the 'Coming Soon' door to Vykker's Labs.

Grieva 12-06-2009 03:07 AM

I think when Exoddus was made Vykker's Labs was going to be underground, theres a sketch in the art book of the undeground entrance dated 96

MeechMunchie 12-06-2009 03:55 AM

Upon seeing your screenshots of SB, I suspect it is just general pollution that gives the green glow, but it is in some kind of walled-off space. They put the facilities on the map of Oddworld, didn't they? I think FeeCo is in the same desert as Necrum, hence Abe being able to winch/lever/pump his way there.

Josh 12-06-2009 04:01 AM

Nowhere near each other...

Then again, Mudos is friggin big.

MeechMunchie 12-06-2009 04:05 AM

That map's different to the one in the book.

Grieva 12-06-2009 04:18 AM

Ah yeah, if the polluted air itself had a bit of glow that would make sense, and it would be brighter lower down as its more dense,
the lake idea was just to give some purpose to the all pipes that could feed into it, and give an explanation to this pic of a pipe feeding into a barrel or tube that looks like its producing light

Eh! thats a good question, Mabye the plan was to build a Feeco train that could fly or they could of bulit a track up to it the labs.

Josh 12-06-2009 06:15 AM

Maybe it was a different Vykkers Labs? There are more than 1.

Crashpunk 12-06-2009 06:23 AM

theres more then 1?

Josh 12-06-2009 06:52 AM

Why put it there if you can't prove it?

What do you think this is Max? Wikipedia?

All the latest articles are chock full of much-needed references.

any references like that for the floating slig barracks?

It might go into a lit indoor area or an incinerator.

Grieva 12-06-2009 08:20 AM

yeah that makes a lot of sense, with the pipes for ventilation

I read it in an interview a few months before OWF was created.

STM 12-06-2009 08:43 AM

- I know there's a wall around slig barracks because you can get out.
-Like ancient cities such as Catal Huyuk, the barracks is built up and up with the older levels at the bottom, the complex was once on sturdy ground but now it held together by flimsy copper (or some sort of other unreactive metal) piping.
-Vykers labs was going ot be in the woods.

Josh 12-06-2009 08:52 AM

I think Scrabtrapman's ideas make more sense than the floating thing. A lot of it is metal poles and cloth.
http://www.oddworldforums.net/attach...5&d=1260058707
It's also on the ground there.

It looks like it is built around a wasteland, so no wild creatures or 'Enviromental Terrorists' can break in. The big towers all look like they are on the ground outside of the Barracks, so they can't float.

oh god Josh just give in.

but there's lots of things you could question, like why they are using a Necrum-styled slamdoor in SB (in one of the pictures). why not an industrial one? i was under the impression that natives somehow made the Necrum slamdoors anyway. also, where did you get the info about a lake or summat in SB? i have never seen or heard about that. unless i missed it.

Wil 12-06-2009 10:27 AM

It's a floating wasteland, duh.

MA, that is an industrial slamdoor. Compare it with the slamdoors in Necrum Mines, Bonewerkz and SoulStourm Brewery, then compare it with those in the outdoors and underground parts of Necrum.

Interestingly, slamdoors in industrial places are native in design if it's a secret area found in a native environment.

Grieva 12-06-2009 10:32 AM

The lake thing was just an idea that i thought fit but MeechMunchie's description sounds better, Alcar and Xavier mentioned a large body of water in slig barracks here waaay back which influenced the idea a bit but that was nothin solid to go on

I think maybe its a necrum door because that is a secret area you get to from necrum and they might load up different sprite sets for each portion of the game

Wil 12-06-2009 10:43 AM

Alcar is probably refering to the attached background, which clearly shows the edge of the floating platform, and the wings extending out.

MA 12-06-2009 10:45 AM

@Max:
looks Native.

http://oddworldlibrary.net/archives/...E/SSAE0353.jpg

must be a secret area in SB then. still doesn't answer why they would use it.

i don't actually care about it, i was just using it as an example that there are many things that can be questioned about SB and any other area in Oddworld. its like when someone asked why other mudokons don't fall down when an explosion occurs; its just game mechanics. no deep meaning to it.

OddjobAbe 12-06-2009 10:47 AM

I'm positive that on my copy, that slam door is industrial.
