remove the pdf extension to make sligstorm work!

joshkrz 08-17-2009 11:18 AM

Err, OK...

Why did you rename your game to PDF and also what program are you using to make this game?

Plus you only double post when you have done a big update, an hour between each update isn't a lot so next time please update your original post, thank you.

AlexFili 08-17-2009 12:27 PM

"thingies" <- not exactly the mark of a professional.

"so i brainstormed and tiped sligstorm" <- Hell's bells... I pray to god that you don't do an encore, or the universe might implode.

My advice is to go back to the drawing board and ask yourself, does the world really need a semi-crap Oddworld rip-off? No offense, well done for trying.

Scraby 08-17-2009 01:24 PM

thanks :D im using game maker 7.0 and the pdf deleting the pdf extension and downloading those two files will let you play the game as i think?

AlexFili 08-17-2009 03:38 PM

maybe, but don't expect many people to try it if you make it that complicated. you might want to put some screenshots up on imageshack too.

Fucking hell AlexFili your going a bit extra there. Everyone has to start somewhere.

Mate use http://fileave.com to host and direct link your files, also delete the old versions of your files when you update them.

I don't understand why you have uploaded them as PDF, whats wrong with ZIP?

EDIT - Oh I see, your trying to get around the file size limit.

--
Now seriously, what program do you use to zip your files, because my machine can't open any of your files. I have tried windows and 7-zip and all i get is messages telling me to insert disk 1 of 3 or 7-zip cannot open this file as an archive, sort it out man.

AlexFili 08-18-2009 12:30 AM

Just having a bit of a laugh. I'm quite proud of these people who make Oddworld games really... it's just that most of them are super-generic or really boring.

If everyone who made these piddly little games came together and made one super game or a minigame collection, it would rock. Unfortunately we all have to waste time making our own "game engines"... re-doing the same 99% of code over and over.

You sound just like Lorne Lanning right there. Us aspiring game developers should be trying to work together. I always use sprites and code I find else where if I can. I suck at spriting as I have no drawing capabilities so rather then waste time making crap I pull from other resources. I made one platform game a while ago with basic jumping, walking, and gradual speed increase into running. Any of my games with platform elements use this same code.

Here's my thought process. I starting learning how to create games to well... create games. Not spend hours recreating the light bulb. I take every short cut I can to spend most of my time doing actual game design. Now that doesn't mean I don't program at all because I still find it useful to understand how certain things work so I can manipulate it. That's the reason I choose to learn programming languages so I can do what ever want with my ideas. There are plenty of programs out there that require no coding at all to make games, but they also are incredibly limited. In the end I guess it's all about balance.

AlexFili 08-18-2009 08:29 AM

I use Flash because I can create something workable in a very short space of time. Sorry to sound like a sourpuss... but it's true that a lot of the games here are like very basic platform demos that contain so many flawed ideas that would never make it off the ground. There are some really promising hopefuls around here though.

Scraby 08-18-2009 03:28 PM

not the zip problem i cant compress it alvays turns the zip and 2 other files those that i uploaded as "pdf file"

JayDee 08-19-2009 02:01 AM

you cant even move anywhere and ask before you use my tilesets
--PM me or something but dont just use other peoples resources without asking

Scraby 08-20-2009 04:14 PM

jump at beggining with space

joshkrz 08-20-2009 04:32 PM

Scraby, perhaps you don't get how things work here:

If you find a good sprite sheet, background, graphic, sound or any asset on this site and use it, you NEED to tell the owner, and include them in the thread and the game credits, unless told otherwise.

Stealing others work is looked down on a lot here, so best put jdude in the credits along with Carnix who made the slig sprite.

AlexFili 08-21-2009 02:03 AM

Wow, could this guy BE any more noobish?

Now now Alexfili don't become a veteran OWF member. For some odd reason when ever someone has been a member of this forum for too long they become an elitist prick and bash new users. Scraby may not have the best grammar in the world or understand standard game development procedures, but that's no reason to insult the guy. As a fellow Oddworld enthusiast you should be more supportive.

Scraby 08-21-2009 11:10 AM

ok i will normaly but need to finish the demo and ill put the credits :D

joshkrz 08-22-2009 12:13 PM

Well for a start you should have really put their names in this thread for example:
:

Credit to JDude320 for the tile sets
Credit to Carnix for the Sprites

Also you need to post screen shots of your game to encourage people to support you.

You have sorted it out now but in future you need to upload your files and make them easily distributable, so easy to open file format (EXE) with a small file size and loading times, easy to get to place (fileave.com) with no waiting like rapid share (God I hate that site).

STM 08-23-2009 07:06 AM

C'mon guys he's just a wee noob, can't you remember when you made your first game, he hasn't seen your pages or my copyright page or anything poor lad, we should try to help him rather than post negatives well not really negatives but y'kno,

Stick together and stuff.

Erm I can't open your game file demo thing any hel pfrom any1?

PS Does any one think we need a zulag 5 or a seperate topic area so we can discuss or games? I do

AlexFili 08-23-2009 07:46 AM

I was annoyed that he was using tilesets without permission. If he adds credits and the authors are okay with that I have no problem.

I don't mean to act like an OWF Vet, but I know that so many fangames get attempted all the time. The fact that he's kept on replying and improving his game is proof that he might just be lacking in experience... which is understandable. It's a shame that all these fangame attempts are all so similar... it would be nice to have one which is just totally outside of the box.

Scraby 08-23-2009 01:33 PM

soon gonna add the last version of the demo then i will start the real missions(need to add the credits thingy)and sorry for that abot sprites i vas so excited on making a game so i searched everywhere i even found original abe sprites :Dhttp://Scraby.fileave.com/Sligstorm.exe

keep going Scraby, and just reread these posts so you don't muck up;

thx :D

STM 08-24-2009 12:00 AM

Scraby your doing this very quickly, will you get an auto installer though: that wud be awsum...Scraby you do no that u cat use other people tile sets nowdon't you, my sprites are on tabbicats (can never rememer his real name less i see it) game thread, look for em if u need sprites for sligs, mudokons, fleeches, scrabs etc! =D I give u 100% usage so long as you credit me or howevers u use

Scraby 08-24-2009 08:08 AM

oky i will thx :D im gonna put the auto installer for it until i start a part with scrabs completly different maps hey can someone help me code or do something with those enemyes i need them?

JayDee 08-24-2009 08:41 AM

i wouldnt start adding enemys till you get the main charcters basic controls right first.people would get annoyed that while there in the middle of jumping so their be able to move that there getting shot at by an enemy.

STM 08-25-2009 12:11 AM

Also are the walls going to be visibleand the rooms a bit more detailed?

joshkrz 08-25-2009 07:13 PM

If you require an installation program I will be happy to help. I can also do small file size update patches if you require.

Send a PM or email my way.

Scraby 08-31-2009 06:15 AM

My fellow aspiring game developer, I personally have much experience with controls. Though I'm not sure as to what you are referring to specifically. Do you mean to say your character's movement no longer works correctly now that he can jumps? Or are their certain actions that no longer perform correctly due to the jump?

It's always best to specify your problem the best you can so others can help. Programming is a very diverse thing. There are untold amounts of ways to accomplish any one task. Perhaps if you quoted your code, told me what you intended to produce, and what the actual result was I would have a better understanding of how to help you.

This.

You need to describe problems and errors as much as you can, posting part of the code that is the problem so we can see what is wrong. By "we" I mean Venks and Jdude320 because I know fuck all about game maker scripting.

Venks I really do admire your skills in coding and development.

Scraby 09-01-2009 08:23 AM

well when i made the left right thingy movement and after that i added jumping the character freezes at the beginning or wont even move and the prob 2 that i found that animation speed is out of order the guy runs like hes being chased by a scrab..... hey how can i make a picture like... i saw some guys make abe look like he is criying how did they do that make the original pictures do that???????is there an editor to move picture parts???

Heh there isn't that much to appreciate. Sure I understand a lot of code, but truthfully I've yet to ever complete a single project. Though working on a vast multitude of projects has really helped me learn a lot. I've also learned a lot from looking at the source code for other projects and figuring out what makes everything tick.

Determined to break my trend of never finishing a project I've been sticking to Divine Space rather fervently. My vertical scrolling shooter game. My friends and I have been working on it for about three months now, not exactly religiously, and I'm very proud of how it is coming a long. When I finish it I would love to hear what all you developers here think of it.

Again I can't really tell what is cuasing the problem without the code you're using. It could be a collision problem or something in your jump.
The animation speed is simple enough. Every object in Game Maker defaults at 30 image speed. What you should do is either in the create event for all your animations or during the walking animation, but be sure to set it back to what ever the animation speed needs to be for your other animations, stick in this code.
:

image_speed=0.5;

That should half the image speed thus slowing down has fast it appears he's moving. Keep tweaking around with the number until you find what works for you.

If you want more help with the jumping problem you should upload the gmk so I can just look at it myself.

JayDee 09-03-2009 08:46 AM

upload the gmk and ill have a look at it. but what method are you using for the jump are you using coding, d&d or making it a set path. i use coding it makes it much more accurate. at the moment i would suggest creating a "mask" for your player so that he doesnt get stuck on the floor and i would get a better understanding of tilesets as right now its just loads of small ledges as if you use it as an object and not a tileset he will get stuck because im ade the floor bumpy not one straight boring line.
