Rep power.

It seems that people's rep power has plummeted. whilst they have not recived any change in their actual rep.

Answers please.

Nate 07-21-2009 03:48 AM

Okay, I'm impressed. You spotted that one quickly.

For those who don't know, the rep power is the amount that the receiver's rep increases by when you give posrep. Negrep subtracts half of the rep power.

Previously, the rep power was calculated as follows:
1 point for joining
1 point for each year the person has been a member.
1 point for each 1000 posts.
1 point for each 100 rep points.
EDIT: Removed the bit about getting a point for being a mod and added the bit about getting a point for joining.

If you were keeping track of recent repping activity, you'll notice that the people at the top of the list have been increasing in leaps and bounds. The main reason for this is that certain people had absolutely massive amounts of rep power. What's more, there were huge gulfs between the people who had a small-medium amount of rep power and the people who had huge amounts. This is because as people gained more rep, their rep power grew enormously.

For example, I have been a member for 7 full years, I have more than 7000 posts and 2067 rep points. Thus, my rep power was 1 + 7 + 7 + 20 = 35 = fucking huge.

We didn't notice this when we first set up the rep system because everyone had pretty much no rep. Now, as the field has spread out more, it meant that pretty much all the rep given out (in terms of points) was attributable to a very small number of members. At the same time, the actions of people with only a handful of rep power was almost meaningless in the wider scheme of things.

So, we decided to shake things up a bit. The rep powers are now calculated as follows:
1 point for joining
1 point for each year the person has been a member.
1 point for each 1000 posts.
1 point for each 500 rep points.

This even things out a lot and also puts a higher weight on a member's history with the forum rather than simple popularity. For myself, my rep power has more than halved, to 1 + 7 + 7 + 4 = 19 points.

This only affects reps given out from today onwards. Your current rep level is not changed because each individually awarded rep takes in to account the giver's power on that particular day.

Anyway, in summation, things should be a lot fairer now. If anyone has a problem with this, just let me know. I'm not promising I'll do anything about it, but I won't delete your posts either. Probably.

Wings of Fire 07-21-2009 04:00 AM

Guess who's at the short end of the stick here.

Wil 07-21-2009 04:25 AM

Good thing Shaman pointed this out.

Good thing Shaman pointed this out.

I am quite fantastic...:tard:

Wil 07-21-2009 05:01 AM

Yeah you are. I’d rep you, but I have no rep power now.

Havoc 07-21-2009 05:17 AM

I was wondering when the rep system would start backfiring on you guys. Especially with the huge reps some people have XD.

OANST 07-21-2009 07:02 AM

My rep was fucking glorious.

MeechMunchie 07-21-2009 07:39 AM

And I was finally getting somewhere where my opinions actually made a difference. Back to 1.

MA 07-21-2009 08:36 AM

i posted here to see my rep power.

EDIT: i'm happy.

drag0nbane442 07-21-2009 09:12 AM

I hate you Nate, now I can't negrep glukkonlulu anymore because I have 0 rep power.
EDIT: LOL, I still have 1 rep power. I used to have 2, but I guess it won't make a difference in negrepping glukkonlulu, since negrep=half rep power, and there is no fractions of rep points.

OddjobAbe 07-21-2009 09:17 AM

You're doing it wrong. You're supposed to +rep him in a sarcastic manner.

Wings of Fire 07-21-2009 09:17 AM

My rep power has been more than thirded. Nobody else has any right to complain.

Pilot 07-21-2009 09:18 AM

I brainwashed Nate last night. I'm behind this.

Wil 07-21-2009 09:53 AM

Pilot’s rep power is sensibly high given all those years he’s been active here.

All those continuous years.

OANST 07-21-2009 10:17 AM

All three?

Laser 07-21-2009 12:03 PM

So...I haven't looked yet but I should have around about...4 rep points

Oh I was close :tard:

I have lost 80% of my rep power, I win, ... or lose...

Wings of Fire 07-21-2009 01:07 PM

A complicated and unnecessary equation will reveal my loss is overall the biggest, I think :p.

Bullet Magnet 07-21-2009 02:27 PM

Ah, ha ha, hahahaha.

For myself, my rep power has more than halved, to 7 + 7 + 4 + 1 = 19 points.

Fatigue and emotion must be getting to me, because WoF has been here for one complete year, has just over two thousand posts, has 5 × 500 + n rep points and no moderator powers. 1 + 2 + 5 ≠ 9.

Wings of Fire 07-21-2009 02:34 PM

You get your first point at fifty posts you daft sod.

Fuzzle Guy 07-21-2009 04:24 PM

This is outrageous. I now have to work twice as hard to get to the top.

Or I can just hump Wil and get myself there right away

Wings of Fire 07-21-2009 04:32 PM

Fuzzle Guy is more reputable than me, as is Havoc.

How is this accurate, mmmm?

Nate 07-21-2009 04:54 PM

Because both of them have been members for longer than you. Do you really think that popularity is a more important judge of reputableness than experience?

Max: I think WoF might be right. Members start off with 1 point and then all the rules mentioned above calculate their rep power in addition to that starting point. I'll edit my first post.

Fuzzle Guy 07-21-2009 04:59 PM

Say MS1029 joined the same time as me. He made shitloads of posts. It is plausible that he could be now be more reputable than Joe.

Wings of Fire 07-21-2009 05:03 PM

Just so you all know I'm joking and I don't actually care about the reputation system anymore.

Which is why the postcount rule is set to a number as large as 1000. He would have had to post a shitload for it to make any difference and we'd have banned him for spam well before that.

Also, if MS1029 had lasted here for the same length of time as you, I see no problem with him having more rep than Joe.

Anonyman! 07-21-2009 05:53 PM

WoF and I got screwed.

Nate 07-21-2009 06:00 PM

Dude. We all got screwed. I lost 16 points. And OANST lost 24 points.

If anything, things are better for you now that our powers have been brought closer to your level.

used:) 07-21-2009 08:47 PM

Ah, power to the troletarian! Nyuk, nyuk, nyuk.

Pilot 07-21-2009 08:52 PM

Why am I not getting screwed?

Nate 07-21-2009 09:19 PM

I don't know. Try working out a bit, get a new haircut and maybe even join a dating website.

Pilot 07-21-2009 09:23 PM

That's so below the belt as to not even be funny.

shaman 07-22-2009 04:12 AM

No no, it's funny jks:tard:

Anonyman! 07-22-2009 08:33 AM

Right, but me being here like, a year or two makes me rep go pffffft.

I couldn't care less, honestly. I just like complaining. I'm a complainer.

abe is now! 07-22-2009 09:21 AM

I had got 10 points and now I've got 5 points I will die soon in this way shit!

OANST 07-22-2009 09:53 AM

500 might be a bit excessive, but what the hell. It doesn't really matter.

Pilot 07-22-2009 08:15 PM

OANST, now change your signature............

OANST 07-23-2009 07:59 AM

What's that?

Edit: Who changed me to Oddworld Masturbator, anyway? I bet it was Max. He is such a bastard.
