Drones
Alf has mentioned on a couple occasions the existence of male drones the mating partners of the various queens(who according to Alf are not appeasing to the eyes), I wonder if these drones will ever come into play IF oddworld games are ever made again.
Now I'm much more interested in Abe's mysterious father then his constantly depressed mother. Was Abe's father special? Is that why Abe is blue? Oh and as a final thought isn't it odd that a lot of fan-fics have male/female mudokons when the worker muds are all sexless with male names. |
Abe is blue because he is the Mudokon who was chosen to save his enslaved race.
Mudokons are all male, besides the queen Mudokons(if there are more besides Sam). |
There is a lot of interest in the mud drones, primarily because we know so little about them.
Abe's father wouldn't have had any effect on Abe's specialness because he would also have been the father of hundreds, if not thousands, of Abe's brothers. |
:
Sense Abe and his friends are all just workers that means they have no reproductive organs so they ain't male. As Alf said they just have male names. Another thing just throwing it out there, a lot of people seem confused with Scrabs killing each other in AO and AE, but not MO. It makes perfect sense to me, Scrabs seem alot like lions to me in terms of being territorial and having the one alpha male leading the pack. Sorry about that ramdom thought now back to drones, Alf says that he isn't really related to Abe, only in the sense that all mudokons are related. I wonder does that mean that Alf has a different father, mother, or more simply do workers from Sam just not consider each other siblings? Would the same apply to sligs or do Big Bro Sligs understand the relationship? Well... as dumb as they are perhaps not. |

http://www.oddworld.com/firsttenyear...ralf4_03.shtml :)Drones are mentioned here, yay drones. :DAlf says Abe's daddy could be anybody. :DI just had an idea, since sligs and big bros say mama jokes in MO, maybe sligs don't actually know where they come from, and they aren't actually depressed, just eebil. :DThe reason for non queen female mudokons in fanfics is no one wants their mary sue to look fat...:DOr they're just infertile or not queens for some other good fanfic logical reason.

He meant the queen(s).
|
So are you telling me there are Mudokon males and females... with no reproductive organs?
How does that make sense? |
They may have some rudimentary sexual organs, but are just plain infertile anyway. We don't know how far evolution has taken that feature, or how long they've been evolving for to estimate.
|
I don't think worker Mudokon's have sexual organs.. or at least anything to show for it.
Alf said that their skirts aren't meant for covering up anything, just fashion. If clothes were always covering something up then he would wonder why humans wore hats. |
Mudokon, slig and Glukkon reproductive models are based on that of colonial insects such as ants and termites, in which there is one reproducing queen in the colony that was fertilised by a male drone from another colony. Only the drones and "princesses" can fly, the young queens leave the nest to start their own, and the drones fertilise them so that they can lay eggs. In some species only the reproducing offspring are born from fertilised eggs, in others the worker's eggs are also fertilised. Often the male dies after breeding, in others he hangs around as a sperm factory. Some species keep a harem of males.
The biggest difference between insect and Oddworld models is that on Earth, all the workers are genetically female, with underdeveloped sexual organs. In bees the development of queens and workers depends on how much royal jelly they are fed as larvae. However under certain circumstances hormonal imbalances in the hive can lead to the workers laying eggs and competing with one another, in which the entire hive descends into anarchy. On Oddworld, all the worker-class individuals are infertile and underdeveloped males instead of females. There also appears to be an artificial soldier class in sligs created by steroids. |
There is no evidence that drones and princesses can fly. I suspect that this is another difference between insect and Oddworld models.
|
Also the worker class Mudokons, Glukkons, and Sligs are not males in any way shape or form.
1) Alf has stated that they are neither sex, they just have male names. 2) The stats for Mudokons/Glukkons/Sligs say they have NO reproductive organs, not underdeveloped ones geesh. |
They also have voices that, on Earth, would be interpreted as coming from a male (albeit a very perculiarly‐voiced male).
|
remember also, that all the characters are addressed as "he"
|
1) Just cus a persons voice is deep doesn't make them a man, unless butch lesbians are in fact males in disguise.
2) If I call a female superior officer "Sir" does that make her a man? FYI you call superior female officers "sir" in the army. |
Just hush, you lost the argument.
|
:
I'd be there to show them the light! |
Erm, good for the army. Now try calling a woman a ‘he’ and see where it gets you. Unless you’ve already called her a butch lesbian.
|
Well I guess you got me there, I really don't know why they call themselves he/him/etc. Guess its simply cus they have more maloe characteristics.
However just because they are called he/him/etc doesn't mean they are actually male. |
jeez! Abe is a frickin guy. Stop being so concerned if his loincloth is covering up his junk.
|
Abe is not a guy or a girl.
:
|
Well it's pretty obvious Abe, as worker class mudokon, is assexuate. And OWI simply used male names for all the worker class muds. But they still aren't male or female.
As for the drone I guess we could call them male, and the queen female. but we haven't seen any yet. |
Now that think about it Drones die soon after mating, does that mean Abe will never know his father?
|
It’s possible, but by no means certain. The inspiration behind the super species of Oddworld is to explore how different cultures and ideologies revere individuals central to their existence. The Glukkons praise Maggie as though she were a Hollywood (or Nolybab) celebrity. The Mudokons look up to Sam as a caring mother/grandmother. Other biological specifics of Oddworld creatures are probably designed to contrast ideologies as much or more than simply to mirror a selected Earth reproductive model.

You call female superior officers "M'am" not "Sir". That would be silly. Just because Oddworldians are often superspecies by no means determines that they are in other ways similar to insects species. The females may not have the large egg sac yet, but that would mean they can still travel, either themselves or carried by workers from their original home, which would help her start up a new colony. This also does not necassarily mean that Drones die. For all we know, a worker that does an especially good job, and is the best worker or something, gets a special royal jelly, which allows them to become male, and they could then breed with a new queen from another colony, perhaps that's how it may work. We really can't be sure. |
If there is such royal jelly I doubt anyone can get to it.
Most likely its being controlled by the Glukkons. Sense all the Mudokon workers are shipped out as eggs that means none of them would get a shot at it either. Also I think the best worker just becomes Employee of the Year. They may get paid a little and get a floor waxer, but from the looks of it I don't think Abe got any royal jelly. |
OWI probaly hasn't even bothered thinking 'bout Abe's father. Theres not an explination for everthing because OWI hasn't created everything.
I hate it how everyone acts as if Oddworld is true. |
I'm sure Lorne Lanning has thought about Abe's father. Its kinda hard to have children without a father.
|
The design philosophy of Oddworld is that every single character need to look as if it came not from an artist’s drawing board, but from a mother. Taken literally, it implies that not all characters have a male parent, but I interpret it as meaning that the life cycle and personal history is very important when creating the main characters. If Abe’s parentage is of any significance to the Quintology, Lorne will have already thought it through.
|
Ugh, stop over-analyzing, you people. It's clear that the reproductive models of oddworld are modeled after colonial insect models on Earth. Not modeled completely, Mudokon females and males do not have wings. But the structure is still the same.
|
lol over-analyzed?
I never asked if they have wings I couldn't care less, I don't really care about the whole reproductive thing either. I was just thinking about Sam and how it must suck for Abe not to know his parents. Then I realized the "s" at the end their. We know absolutely nothing about Abe's father or the other drones. I just think it would be a shame if Abe's father died before he met his son who turned out to be the savior of his race... now if that doesn't make you proud what will? |
i'd be proud
|
heh, with that drones system no one will be able to tell who's realy his father. All drones are supposed to do is procreate the mudokon race. they don't raise them or anything else. Same thing for the mother, so I realy doubt Abe has the same feelings towards his parents as a human would
|
:
One drone would have many children. I doubt he would feel much for any of them. |

You are, perhaps, referring to The Daily Deception Online that was published on Oddworld.com in December 2003. It said Abe is spraying ‘MOM’ graffiti in urban areas.
But The Daily Deception Online was almost entirely created for the Inhabitants to have fun with Oddworld fans. After Munch’s Oddysee dropped the Sam plot, and OWI started developing a non‐Quintology title, the question of Abe’s mother was left hanging, and this is OWI poking fun at that fact. The canonicity of this merriment is suspect. |
:
Lorne says that Abe is on vacation in Necrum as ordered by the Almighty Raisin, however Abe spends this time crying thinking about Sam. |
