Oddworld makes the cover

This may have been posted already, but I've been gone longer than some of you have been alive (Depending on your definition of "Living"), so blah!

I was strolling through the local bookstore when I spied a tome titled Video Game Art. It was factory sealed, so I couldn't open it, but I glanced at the cover, which was holographic. The initial image was that of the world-famous Solid Snake of MGS fame. I shifted the book so the light changed and the second image revealed itself as...Abe!

Nice to see Oddworld Inhabitant's grand work associated with Hideo Kojima's masterpiece, on an equal level. Boo-yah!

The backflap also mentioned PsychoNauts in there, so if anyone has actually purchased the book (I'm pretty much broke right now. Christmas shopping), any information you could offer would be flavorful.

Wow that sounds cool, ill look for it.
What was it called?

Just Video Game Art, because creative names hurt the economy, apparently.

Cullen Heath 12-22-2005 12:52 PM

Think I could find it on ebay?

You could find if on Amazon, or even a bookstore near you.

Cullen Heath 12-22-2005 12:56 PM

I dont really have any bookstores near me.
Im gonna look on ebay, can you tell me what I should put in for the search?

By the way, if I do end up getting it, I will scan it so you guys can check it out.

Wil 12-22-2005 12:57 PM

I couldn't. In fact, the search term "video game art" returned just 5 results from all auctions across all local eBays.

Kimon 12-22-2005 12:58 PM

They have it at amazon.com.

xx_xx_0dd 12-22-2005 12:58 PM

Cool! I need to get that. How much is it? I love MGS and OW and Psychonauts.

I'm pretty sure it's brand new, so it won't be on the VL auction block for awhile. However, you should find something if you try Amazon.

Oddish 12-22-2005 01:02 PM

Did it have alot of Video Game art in it?

Once I saw this book in a bookstore, about the best video game heros, and included Munch's Oddysee, it was a page or two. It wasn't that much of a suprise for me.

Cullen Heath 12-22-2005 01:02 PM

Sorry, not a big fan of Amazon.
Ill just check ebay.

I don't know. The book I found was sealed (Have to by it to open it). I suspect it was mostly an analysis.

Tell you guys what: If i get enough money for Christmas, I'll see if I can purchase it and tell you what it's all about.

Nate 12-22-2005 02:14 PM

I'm working at Barnes and Noble so I'll see if I can find me an unsealed copy.

Cullen Heath 12-22-2005 02:22 PM

Do you know if they even have it there, nate?

Leto 12-22-2005 02:27 PM

May I be the first to say: Holy crap it's Nepharski!

Secondly: The book sounds like something I would purchase, so I will definatley look into it. Even from the cover it sounds somewhat costly, mind you.

Cullen Heath 12-22-2005 02:30 PM

It does, because he said holographic.

Man I want this book.

Dipstikk 12-22-2005 04:42 PM

Anyone have a scan of the cover?

Nepharski 12-22-2005 06:33 PM

Of the MGS cover, yes.

Cullen Heath 12-22-2005 07:35 PM

Thats weird. This is the book we are talking about right.

Too late; I already said it.

Barnes and Noble don't have it in stock but they are ordering it in. I've no idea when it will arrive though so I'll keep an eye on it.

Xavier 12-23-2005 01:19 AM

yeah I saw this a long time ago...

you can find it on amazon:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/284...books&v=glance

I would imagine it would be worth it Xavier.
Hell its got Abe in it, why not?

By the way, I also searched on ebay and found nothing.

Xavier 12-23-2005 11:06 AM

I'm not the type of guy that would buy a book because it displays an picture I allready have...

I think it has Darkwatch art in it too (a game made by ex-oddworlders)
but I was wondering if someone could find a list of the games represented in that book?

Nate 12-23-2005 11:58 AM

It looks like it's not just random art; it's also talking about the inspiration behind the games which should be interesting.

:

Video Game Art is a first look from an art history and post-modern cultural perspective at the influences behind, and achievements of today’s genre-defining video games. Examining themes such as character, environment, and the growing place of video games among more traditional art forms, and including commentary from luminaries of the field and often unpublished behind-the-scene art of both past and upcoming games, Video Game Art is a pioneering foray into what promises to be the dominant art form of the coming century.

Cool. Which store? And do they have any of this book in stock?

Well if Abe was on the front cover, I would buy it.

Nepharski 12-24-2005 12:26 PM

Xav, I'll see if I can buy it. If and when I do, I'll tell you if it's worth it or not.

Cullen Heath 12-24-2005 12:44 PM

It looks worth it, I looked it up and saw some of the pages in it. Looks nice.
Plus if he says it holographic, it definatley worth it. (to me, at least)

Never judge a book soley by it's Abe-featuring, holographic, limited-edition cover.

Cullen Heath 12-24-2005 12:52 PM

^:lol::lol::lol:.
Oh well, Im going to anyways.

Thank you...
I like art books but I don't want to buy any single book about game art that's released

Cullen Heath 12-24-2005 12:58 PM

Yeah but this one has Abe in it.
You know what that means dont you?
YOU CAN STICK YOUR ABE IN THERE!!!

Nate 12-24-2005 06:54 PM

Yeah but Abe is in 3/4 of the game art books out there. Trust me, I checked.

Cullen Heath 12-24-2005 07:06 PM

NO, I was kidding around.
YOU HAVENT SEEN "THE HOT CHICK"?

Xavier 12-24-2005 11:48 PM

nate's right...

and what's that hot chick you are talking about?

Cullen Heath 12-25-2005 04:49 AM

Its a hilarious movie...Where this hobo and this beautiful girl get this spell cast on them and they switch places for a few weeks.
But before they switch, the girl goes to this antique hippie store, and the hippie owner comes next to everything she looks at and sais: "You can stick you WEEEEEEED in there!!!".
THis is how he tries to sell his merchandise. Its pretty funny.

Well back ontopic. Nate, you said you checked it out right? Did you manage to get the price at your Barnes&Nolbe as well?

Nate 12-25-2005 12:40 PM

I didn't get to check it out because it hadn't arrived yet. From memory I think it was do or 30 dollars.

Cullen Heath 12-25-2005 09:07 PM

Thats a fair price.
I could manage that for a book with Abe on the cover.

Kimon 01-03-2006 11:46 AM

God, you really are a physcho. :p

Anyways, I got the book. It's really a great book. There are more than a few pages covering Oddworld, several with previously unseen concepts (at least for me). One appears to be Abe standing in the big industrial room showcased in the pre-Munch's Oddysey concept videos.

But besides Oddworld, it's got some other great art in it. Definetly worth the buy.
