Does anyone think we should have an " Other Games" subforum?
I've been wondering about this for quite a bit now, and I think that since this is mostly a gaming site, most of us are gamers and play SO many games other than just Oddworld, and OWI is ceasing it's gaming shennanigans, perhaps we should open up somewhere for us to focus on gaming in particular?
Now before you say it, yes, I know it's not a great time to post this, because there isn't much in the way of games threads up near the top 10 threads in OT, but I'd like to ask; do you think you'd be inclined to contribute more game related stuff if there was a dedicated forum in which you could do so? I vote in favour, but something tells me that Alcar should really be saying all this... So I'd just like to make it clear that I'm not making any promises or gaurantees that this will happen, or that I'm able to make it happen - it would be Alcar's choice, and his choice alone... So that in mind I think it should be discussed here, if not for any other reason, to give Peter a chance to see what everyone else thinks about it, if he hasn't already written off the idea. Above all I'm interested to see what you lot think. |
That'd be great actually. I'm a huge video game loser, so that'd be mucho cool. I'm all for that. :)
|
Nah. not enough interest. Keep it all in OT. I know i won't close it unless it gets to vermin stages in which a designated thread'll probably be made.
|
Well, i do think that people would write more about games and stuff, if we had a forum dedicated to it. I'd say that we should try it out, and if it doesn't go too well, we can just remove the forum again.

Meh. Peter's choice, not ours.
|
That idea sucks. We hardly sit around posting about games as it is, and you want a subforum for trivial talk of them? Pffffft. That would be such a waste of space, and you're retarded for ever suggestion that.
No worries, though, I jest. The idea sounds suprisingly nifty for game talk and whatnot. I say it sounds good. |

But the idea isn't really to get people to stop posting about games in OT, it's more to encourage more game talk, because I wouldn't be suprised if many of us felt like game talk really doesn't belong in OT. It's not a heartfelt idea I just thought it was worth mentioning. If nobody wants to do it then that's cool, either way it's good to find out. |
For me, creating the forum would spark the interest. Aside from that stupidly long Halo thread we once had, game threads tend to be short lived in favor of other Off Topic material. The (psuedo) wealth of other topics available trivializes game threads. Just my two cents.
|
I agree... I think there are a lot of OTers who feel that many game topics are somewhat spamlike or of lesser relevance to more traditional off topic subjects. That includes myself at times.
|
There've been more Doctor Who topics recently than gaming ones. Lets have a Doctor Who sub-forum. :p
I'm sure the big guys will consider it if you all whinge enough. |

It's just that there seems no need for this forum, but I agree that it could boost gaming talk. |

It's not completely pointless because lets face it, we're all serious gamers. Or at least, most of us are. We'd all find time to stop by and contribute, and have things to say... and it would be on a different basis to how things are done in OT. Like for instance I might want to inform people about a new (to me) game that I've found, but I wouldn't even dare to THINK about posting it in OT, because really nobody would give a shit... in fact it'd just die. But if we had a dedicated games forum, I would post it there and it would be fine... people would actually comment on it and there might well be some discussions... I'm not exactly sure why I think this I just somehow know... something about the difference in the psychology of it just tells me that it would go down differently. Heck maybe I'm just going on guts here but I'm pretty sure that if I could be bothered to type it all out you'd understand where I'm coming from when I say that people would be more likely to really get into talking about games if they had their own dedicated non-oddworld gaming forum... or subforum, or whatever. |
Good for some things, but mostly will be wasted by idiots with random polls and really boring discussions.
|
Yeah, so It would be good. Apart from the spamming and repeated topics of the same games and all that.

*Sigh* I guess I just kinda feel sorry for Alcar in that there used to be this active games company churning out stuff to talk about, and even when it wasn't churning it out it was there to talk about... but then it died and went away and now the whole thing is relying on an essentially dormant company to release a film. I mean, lets face it, in that respect GD's days are numbered... there's only so many times that it can rehash the same conversations about the old games before it comes time to pull the plug. This place is still, by catagory, a gaming forum, so perhaps it would be a good and overall logical route to go down? Maybe even get in some more, new, intelligent members who'll be attracted by the fact that they can chat about games that they like, and hang out with all the awesome dudes that we have here. This lack of Oddworld making games isn't going to kill us off outright but it's sure as hell going to have an affect. OWF is going to be progressively less active in recruiting new members without doubt. So maybe, you never know, it might just do us good? |

I just think it'll liven up the place. :

Come on people! This is a superbly good idea. I feel the same way about posting game related topics in off-topic as Dino does. If there was a forum for this, I wouldn't hesitate. It's actually rather silly that we've yet to implement such a forum (This is a forum devoted to a game!). It would also allow those gamers who may have lost interest in Oddworld, to get their gaming discussion fix. Oddworld's pretty dead right now anyway. You have my full support Dino! At least let's give it a try.

How about it Peter, why not? You only live once right? :D |

OMG TEH DINO ARMY!1!!1
Ok, maybe it isn't such a bad idea. ;) |

Yeah, I think a gaming phorum would be great,, but I hope it wouldn't attract much new members. 'OWF2.0! NOW WITH GAMES!' It shouldn't exactly be advertised. More noobs. :p |
Well, I agree with this idea of a forum for other games. Just don't make them games that are the biggest hits like Halo. I will pledge what minimal forces I have to your cause.
|
I'm sure Halo is going to be in there like it or not, for better or for worse. Farce Life 2 will no doubt be in there too, but I don't really mind, so long as people are talking about what they wanna talk about then it's all cool.
|
It's a little late, but I completely agree. In Oddworld's downtime, it would encourage a world of talk. We need to be responsible though, I have a feeling things might get out of hand. We love games, but sometimes we subconciously go too patriotic ("omg zelda is better than halo") but as long as there's all love and no hate, it'll all be good. That's the worst that can happen, anyway; I'm all up for trial and succession. <3

Initially I thought it was a crap idea. But from reading all of your reasons, I can't believe I'm about to say what I'm about to say: I'm actually, for once in my life, going to open up a new forum! Oh my God! Alcar has gone mad!
However, I still have two cringes: 1) If it doesn't work, and not much posting occurs, I'm merging it back into Off-Topic Discussion and doing away with it. 2) If I put it in Zulag 2 (obviously) we end up with too many forums in Zulag 2. I know it sounds so little, but too me, I really like to keep things nice and pretty. And what do we call it? I think the 'Games Forum' sounds crap, especially when all of our other forums have better and interesting names (well I think so anyway). Also, do we make it a sub-forum of Off-Topic? Or a proper forum? As for Moderators, I'll leave that up to SeaRex to choose, as I believe his department is Users. I'm sure he'll pick the most suited (and who is online frequently, etc, etc) for the games forum. So, all of you reply with the following if you want to see this fruitate: 1) A cool and jazzy name for the forum, but nothing too long 2) Where do we put it? OT Sub-Forum? Or Proper Zulag 2 Forum? Alcar... |
1. "Miscellaneous Gaming" might work. Or something simpler like "Random Gaming" or "Non-Oddworld Gaming."
2. I say it should be a an OT sub-forum. Right under W&B, even. That way, I wouldn't have to worry about choosing another mod. XD But if it does end up as a new forum in itself, I'll give the mod title some thought. |
I'm against the idea of a sub-forum, it seems that if we're worried about a lack of people posting in it, this would strengthen that problem. I pretty much ignore the sub-forums all together. It may seem like a pretty small detail, but it may become a factor. I think it deserves a seperate forum, as others have mentioned, the people that joined this place are most likely gamers.
"Non-Oddworld Gaming" sounds good to me. |
*Non-gamer putting in her silly comment* While "Miscellaneous Gaming" sounds nice and professional, I doubt many of the simple-minded kids we get around here sometimes will know the meaning/understand it. "Non-Oddworld Gaming" probably gets the point across much more clearly, like "Non-Oddworld Art and Literature" instead of "Miscellaneous Art and Literature"... :talk:
I think it would look better as a sub-forum in OT, but the problem Mojo just mentioned seems valid. |
If we put it as a OT sub forum, then wouldn't OT be the first phorum with 2 sub forums? O.o
Therefor, I say we should make it a actual forum. But then it's not tidy. (Curses, Alcar! :p) Problemo... Actually, heres an idea. We could put Forum Suggestions and Help in Zulag Three, then gaming in Zulag Two. Perhaps. Confuzzling. |
