*edit I just saw it and it sucked. it is not what u think it is. Just kidding but i might be able to see it midnight tonight. :D

Hobo 06-28-2005 12:51 PM

Hush child...

This film looks like it's gonna be one of Spielburg(sp.)'s rubbishy Love and friendship morality films. Ick.

MojoMan220 06-28-2005 01:52 PM

It looks awesome, and the reviews have been surprisingly great. I'll see it the day it comes out, I've got nothing better to do. Too bad Tom Cruise is creepy now.

Leto 06-28-2005 10:15 PM

Remake of a bad movie = shit. Stop the necrophilia! Bah!

MojoMan220 06-28-2005 10:25 PM

It's not really a remake of the 1953 movie, it's based on the H.G. Wells novel. That bad movie just so happened to be based on the novel as well. The novel itself I hear is really good.

That makes me laugh, so, so much. :D XD Wasn't the previous movie based on the novel, at least loosely? It would have to be, no? With a title like 'War of the Worlds'.

Facsimile 06-29-2005 01:46 AM

I just saw it, I thought it was great. I had never heard the audio series or anything, and the movie made me realise how crazy people would go in a situation like that.

*** Spoilers ***

I was disappointed by the ending though. it was anti-climatic and I was hoping the family all died.

What I'm saying is, Steven Spielberg looked at the novel when he made the movie, not the previous film. It's a lot like saying that Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings trilogy was a remake of the earlier film.

Al the Vykker 06-29-2005 08:35 AM

It looks like it could be good and I personally like mostly all Speilberg's work. Namely close encounters of the Third Kind etc. So hopefully this doesnt disappoint.

paramiteabe 06-29-2005 10:43 AM

Well I think it is going to suck because for one its a remake to a classic which should be a big no no for Hollywood filmakers. Well for me Im interested in seeing something nobody has ever seen before, it just seems like Hollywood these days have ran themselves out of original and creative work.

the brew master 06-29-2005 12:51 PM

Why do people think it's a remake,Lord of The Rings was based on a book..did any call that a remake, just cause War of the Worlds had other films made about it does that mean it HAS to be a remake? Or maybe the director has said that it's a remake because i wouldn't know and if so then ignore this post.

Oddish 06-29-2005 12:55 PM

It's a remake of a story formed as a film from a book.

the brew master 06-29-2005 12:56 PM

Oh right,now i get it.Thanks for that.

MojoMan220 06-29-2005 06:35 PM

All those who think the movie will suck, you have nothing to worry about. I'm not going to spoil anything, but what I can say is that it was amazing. The best end of the world movie I've ever seen, without a doubt. This thing is scary as hell.

TheRaisin 06-29-2005 06:41 PM

The machine type thingies look like total rip-offs of the Tripods from the Tripod books. Of course, it's possible that the author of those books ripped off that design from H.G. Wells. I've never read the book, so I don't know. Heh. Okay.

It looks quite awesome. I'm going to see it any day now.

big bro slig #1 06-29-2005 07:10 PM

I just saw it and there is no way i'm not going to get on DVD.

It was awesome. But what can you say? My former nickname just happens to be Mr.UFO.

EDIT OMG, i mean i am younger than most of the people here and NOBODY knows that it evolved from a radio brodcast? If you DID know well then... http://animation.filmtv.ucla.edu/stu...ons/88x31f.gif:compmad:

They're almost identical to the ones in the book their based on.

Kimon 06-29-2005 07:44 PM

I just saw it, and it is damn good. Constantly entertaining. SEE IT NOW!!!! :p

Abeguy 06-29-2005 09:18 PM

Don't forget the Herbie movie.
"But you forgot about Herbie!"
Its all sequels, comic books and remakes. For God's sake do something original.
/will still see FF at least twice.

Abeguy 06-30-2005 08:04 AM

Herbie is not a remake, its a long awaited sequel, like star wars, but they went Backwards, yeah, Herbie Fully Loaded or something like that, that wasn't the name of the old ones.

Statikk HDM 06-30-2005 08:21 AM

True, but though I was wrong on its remake status my larger point, which I've been bitching about at OWF for the better part of 2 years is that Hollywood is nothing but remakes, sequels and comics/books brought to life.
I'm still a total sucker for comic book movies and many sequels, but Christ.

It evolved from a radio broadcast OF THE BOOK!

SeaRex 06-30-2005 03:36 PM

I saw War of the Worlds today and it exceeded almost all of my expectations. Hell, the sheer power of the imagery almost made the complete, total lack of acting skill less noticeable!

Heh. But seriously, the imagery of some of the scenes really hit home. The angry mob of people fighting over the van... the dead bodies floating down the river... really, really great stuff.

And on a side note, I WANTED TO THROTTLE THOSE BRATTY-ASS KIDS THROUGHOUT THE ENTIRE MOVIE.

*** Spoilers ***

I was disappointed by the ending though. it was anti-climatic and I was hoping the family all died.

It was actually how the original story ended, and I'm glad that they didn't botch the ending with some cliche "American spirit triumphing over adversity" thing. Like in Independence Day.

But you do bring up an interesting point. It's my firm belief that a zombie and/or alien survival story should only end in one of two ways...
  • Everybody dies.
  • A Deus ex Machina (in this case, a microscopic one) swoops in and ironically obliterates the malevolent force. There is no way that an inferior species (like... lets say... humanity) could survive in a situation like that.
Yeah. Like that.

Statikk HDM 06-30-2005 03:43 PM

A little off topic, but does anyone know why Cruise has been so batshit lately? I know he's a clam but so is Travolta and that mofo is cooler than the other side of the pillow.

Al the Vykker 06-30-2005 03:44 PM

"Theres always a bigger fish."

Has anyone seen the original War of the Worlds, or have seen both now and can compare. I almost rented it at blockbuster yesterday but I wasnt sure if it was good or not. Oh well.

SeaRex 06-30-2005 03:54 PM

:

Well yeah!

One of the best cheesy-ass sci-fi movies ever made. Which is great if you're into that kinda thing, and horrible if you're not.

I actually thought the ending was better worded in the old version, although it was pretty eloquent in the new one as well. Meh. Maybe I'm just remembering the old ending better than it was.

Statikk HDM 07-01-2005 06:22 AM

If you go down that road get like Skeeters and Battlefield Earth and some Ed Wood stuff. It'll be like MS3K in the comfort of your own home.

ANN NEELY 07-01-2005 07:09 AM

War of the Worlds: Big director, big actors, big budget, big deal.

Esus 07-01-2005 07:16 AM

Signs with lots of money.
Yay.

I honestly believe there are ways to resolve such situations without lameass deus ex machinas.
At least the original explained it better: The aliens were in the process of changing the atmosphere of Earth by growing plants to produce the right gases.

SeaRex 07-01-2005 09:17 AM

:

Indeed. They didn't even try to explain the whole "let's watch the aliens spray bloody stuff that turns into plants everywhere" thing. That was kinda disappointing, but I still enjoyed the movie despite some leaps of logic and plot holes here and there.

*****Minor Spoilers******

Oh, and I disagree! You fool! :p If the aliens hadn't all caught colds and died like little bitches, then they would have exterminated the human race no problem. I mean, can you think of any way the humans could have stopped the aliens? And no, that cheap shot that Tom did with the grenades doesn't count! It doesn't count, I say!

Al the Vykker 07-01-2005 10:25 PM

I had a chance to see it tonight, unfortunately I passed it up. My three good friends who went said it was really good and lately they've been critical of a lot of the movies I've liked that I've seen with them. So I'm hoping to make up for the mistake by seeing it tomorrow or sunday.

the brew master 07-02-2005 01:49 AM

Simply put i loved this film.

The fact it was more about the survival of humans and what they would do if something like that happend instead of Rambo style lunatics fighting off the aliens (which apparently lots of people wanted...theres hollywood for ya) is why i loved this film.

Even if Tom Cruise has been werid lately i still think hes a great actor and he was great in this film. What really pissed me off is people who give bad reviews to this film for the stupidest reasons...like somebody hated the fact Dakota Fanning was screaming alot, yeah i'm sure most 8 year old girls would be much calmer in the face of a full scale alien invasion.Sure there was a few odd bits in the film but it was still great and the aliens were known about but still mysterious which seemd cool.

But when people call this film, dissapointing, flat or even boring just seems pathetic and shows you how much people have been warped by hollywood films(i.e Star Wars,Batman Begins, etc)and they always expect the hero to be some ass kicking machine that pwns everybody in sight but the moment the flim shows humanity and about a normal everyday guy trying to save his family then most people don't care cause there aren't any lightsaber guys in it that save the day.

wow, this post was longer then i wanted it to be but oh well thats all i wanted to say.

I disagree.
Though I probably won't call the film flat, boring, etc, if I did, it wouldn't be because of a lack of arse-kicking.
There are tons of wonderful films that are not action films, that are not boring.
Then again, I'm not going into this expecting an action extravaganza.

the brew master 07-02-2005 04:21 AM

I'm not saying ALL films are like that but MOST big budget box office hit films are expected to be like that and i'm not saying EVERYONE wanted a action extravaganza in War of the Worlds but from the reviews i've read, thats what alot people were bitching about and complaining that it wasn't like Independence Day or Rambo fighting aliens. Then there were some totally biased reviews that hated the film soley on the fact Tom Cruise was the star.

And some of the people's expectations for films are just insanse,Steven Speilburg had 10 weeks to film the movie and 10 weeks to edit it...so if people got what they wanted they'd probably end up with some 2-bit alien bashing movie that would have ended up WORSE that what they thought War of the Worlds is now.

Esus 07-02-2005 08:23 AM

Just saw it: Really brilliant film. This is made up of brilliant scene after brilliant scene. I choose to ignore the sub-par ending and minor plotholes. :)

misty 07-02-2005 09:09 AM

Man, I was hoping that movie was gonna be better than it was, but I was disapointed. Some things just... yea. :fuzzle:

I'm glad you actually went to see it instead of continuing to bitch with opinions based on nothing.

I talked to someone today at school who said if you've read the book it's disappointing, but then other people said it was still good.
To the people that have read the book, what did you think?

tentacle_orgy 07-04-2005 08:41 AM

King Kong is going to be so much better...
