Movies....smart decision?

Do you think it was a good decision to ditch Oddworld games and go for films? I don't really mind, I'd still gladly watch the films, but.....it seems like they just ditched the heart of Oddworld right now....Citizen Ciege sounds cool too but, from what I hear, it has nothing to do with Oddworld (Although I did hear a little bit about Abe and Munch in it somehow). Anyways, main thing I'm saying in my behalf, it's more fun to play it than to watch it.

Johnnyboy 04-07-2008 09:00 PM

Exactly.
I'm gonna repeat what I said in the last post. xD
Yeah, because, I REALLY enjoyed(still do) the classic Abe games.
However, MO was kinda...sucky.
I only played it through once.
And, SW..well...Never played it. Never will.
But, the movies they make...better be REALLY GOOD.
And plus, games, you can use longer.
I think they should've sticked with the games.

On one hand, I would rather watch the Quintology as films than play them as games. Especially as the second Quintology game was a compromised piece of shit.
On the other hand, I can't see the films ever succeeding so I doubt more than one will ever be made. And if Citizen Siege fails commercially (as it could easily do), we could see none.

Citizen Siege is a completely separate IP. It's just developed by the same company which developed Oddworld.

Playing through the stories as games and not just watching them engages you more in the story, if it's done right. If it's not, you're just focusing on the gameplay and the entire plot goes over your head. It's like you're living the experience and deciding, as your character, what to do next.
I've got nothing against films, hell, Lorne's a brilliant director, but I was really hoping that he would prove what he was saying about videogames having immense potential as far as storytelling goes. If he decided to switch to films, that's his decision, and I understand that much more profit comes from being in the movie industry at the present times, but sometimes I can't help wishing that he'd done more for the game industry before moving on. His philosophy was, after all, successful.

Sniff... no mudokons in SW... No mudokons in Citizen Seige... WHY??? WHY??? WHY??? They just don't feel like oddworld stuff unless they have mudokons in them! Although i'm sure CS will be a great movie in its own right

I'm not sure about that. I remember reading on some website (Can't remember which one) that Abe and Munch would both have SOMETHING to do with CS.

Fuzzle Guy 04-11-2008 02:34 PM

Probably the Oh-so reliable Wikipedia.

No. I HARDLY use Wikipedia. It was some other site. I just remember clicking on some random link somewhere about CS and that's where I read about it.

Wings of Fire 04-11-2008 03:11 PM

They were wrong, Max and Xav are right, there are no Oddworld characters in CS. (Although I wouldn't put it past Lorne to throw in some easter eggs like a Meech Munchies poster in the background on a scene or something ;))

Yeah. That'd rock. Even better if they actually had Rupture Farms somewhere in a background. :fuzzle:

mudling 04-12-2008 01:48 AM

Yeah, but it may ruin the immersion.
But as everyone has said, they're completly different worlds, expect something more like George Orwell's 1984 world. ;)

Did anyone notice that in all the OW games it had something to do with evil industrialists that destroy the environment? Well, CS is closely related to envitonmental issues(caused by people, not Glukkons though)

Well it's prety obvious that all Oddworld games have evil industrialists that do things to the environment:stare:

GlukkonGluk 04-13-2008 11:05 AM

I don't mind them going in for movies, but what made them make one that wasn't in OW? I'm sure most of the fans would prefer an OW based one-like me- but i hear they're makeing an Abe's Oddysee movie, so making one with people in it seems like a random one-off

Xavier 04-13-2008 11:31 AM

Good question, even if it has already been answered.

Lorne didn't want to start with an Oddworld film because some people may see him lacking experience in the role of CG movie director. Those people were suspected to ask Lorne to change his vision to adapt it to what they think might be better solutions. Citizen Siege was kinda new, so certain parts could be changed and a bit compromised without upsetting the fans (they would probably never know about it).

After that Lorne will be able to show to those same persons he is able to direct that kind of movies and he will get a lot more freedom to do what he really want to do: an Oddworld Movie, but this time he wont have to change bits and stuff or compromise his vision.

In short, it's a well thought strategy to be able to bring a glorious Oddworld Movie to the fans, the way Lorne wanted us to see it.

Wil 04-13-2008 12:33 PM

All the Oddworld fans may prefer to see an Oddworld film more, but all the Citizen Siege fans would prefer to see a Citizen Siege film more. So it balances out. Well said, Xav.

OddYouko 04-13-2008 03:44 PM

I hope the Abe's Oddysee movie will be really good and have that dark feeling like the game. I hope Citizen Siege is good too. I wanna see them both.

MeechShrykull1029 04-13-2008 04:03 PM

Games are better then movies because you get to control the main character, rather than just watch him.

Wings of Fire 04-13-2008 04:23 PM

=\ They are both completely different mediums, as incomparable as music and art.

Nate 04-13-2008 09:12 PM

I think that, in addition to what Xav said, we must consider that Oddworld has the stigma of being seen as a video game turned movie property. OWI probably wanted to establish themselves as movie producers without past history and any baggage associated with it getting in the way.

GlukkonGluk 04-16-2008 08:05 AM

I don't know if you noticed, meechshrykull1029, but half the time in the first three games, you do just sit and watch when your allies are beating the sligs up for you.

Jordan 04-17-2008 02:06 AM

Lorne hasn't completely 'ditched' the Oddworld games. He's just halted them until he can make some movies. That was his intention from the beginning, and I say good luck to him. The OW games seem pretty difficult to remake as a movie.

Oddworld isn't all about Mudokons dude. If they base the series on one race, the main fans will get bored and abandon OWI. I like Mudokons as much as you, but I want new stuff too.

GlacierDragon 04-17-2008 02:31 AM

I'm looking forward to seeing CS, but I would much rather be looking forward to playing a new oddworld game. I just hope they make some more in the future. Maybe carry on with the quintology or something?

Edit: Then again, that will probably never happen :fuzsad:

Actually, the Sligs are the ones beating the Mudokons in the first game.

Yes. the first two games they get baten by Sligs but have you played Munch's Oddysee? You send your Mudokon/Fuzzle friends to attack the enemies.

MeechShrykull1029 04-18-2008 06:02 PM

No, I don't have an Xbox.

not to mention that Lorne did hire movie animators to work on AO and AE, so i suppose they could have worked both ways?

Some of the animators that lorne approached didnt like the idea of stepping down into game design, which doesnt surprise me really...

dripik 04-19-2008 05:26 AM

Personally, I don't mind that they decided to do CS instead of an Oddworld movie. Supposing that there would be one about e.g. AE, it would be a bit wierd to watch, now that we know the original story which was the plot of the game. Same goes for all adaptations. If AE was made into a movie first, and then into a game, it wouldn't be disturbing actually. All the new info and details to be discovered in the latter would be neat.

Seeing that CS is a brand new plot for us, there won't be any distractions like those I mentioned. If there will be a movie about Oddworld, I'd welcome a story which hasn't been present in any of the video games. Backstory of Abe, maybe?

he said the first three games, which is quite hideously wrong.
