I've been watching the new Doctor Who.

I hate it.

I haven't really being enjoying it that much either. The one with the dolls wasn't that scary, and the one with amy aging was pretty boring.

Nate 09-16-2011 11:05 PM

I kinda liked those two episodes. Doctor Who never does horror very well (with the one possible exception of Blink), so I wasn't expecting very much. I thought the one with the dolls was reasonably good though. The one with Amy aging didn't make much sense, but I liked the drama of putting Rory in that position.

On the plus side, that has actually been used as a plot point within the show.

Crashpunk 09-17-2011 09:09 AM

I mainly hate the new series because of Amy and Rory. The new doctor is pretty good (not as good as Tennent)

I feel like the only person who doesn't like Amy :D

STM 09-17-2011 09:30 AM

I like her, but I don't like her personality. Nothing beats the second doctor period in my book.

Wings of Fire 09-17-2011 09:30 AM

She's miles better than Rose, and her actress is miles more attractive than Billie fucking Piper.

Dynamithix 09-17-2011 10:11 AM

This was my favourite doc.

Dixanadu 09-17-2011 11:26 AM

He was the Doctor when I first begun watching it. Then two episodes later, he morphed into David Tennant.

As for Amy, I'd split her in half.

Hurr

You're not alone, but I don't mind Rory. I'm not sure that I like him as a character per se, but I do very much like the dynamic of having two companions rather than one female who falls in love with The Doctor.

MeechMunchie 09-17-2011 09:08 PM

Well they've been dropped off back on Earth now, in their own time, so you can all stop whining.

Chose between Rose or Amy.. Thats a tough one..

Yes! He should of done waay more episodes then he did.

I watched that last night and i'm happy to see them gone, Not so much Rory but.

I demand a Doctor Who thread!

I thought The God Complex was pretty good, but I found it incredibly distracting that they recycled the musical score from previous episodes rather than write anything new.

Last night I saw Megamind. I had initially refused to watch it because the trailers were so incredibly shite, but I realised whilst watching it that they only represented the first 15 minutes of the film; after that point it went in a totally unexpected, but awesome, direction. I absolutely loved it.

But that brings up another issue; what is it about animated films lately that they always have shite trailers? How To Train Your Dragon's trailer made it look like a cliche Disney flick about a boy and his pet. Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs made it look corny and crap. Pretty much every single Pixar film since the original Cars has had a trailer that made me hesitate to go see it. How can they so completely fail to represent the aspects of the films that are actually worth seeing?

Strike Witch 09-18-2011 07:27 AM

I think it's because they aim at the lowest common denominator: Children.

The God Complex
It wasn't too bad, I liked the little reversal of the whole faith dealie, but I'm kind of getting sick of corridors. Are they squeezing the budget or something? Next week they're reusing the Cybermen costumes again.

Nate 09-18-2011 07:44 AM

I liked the fact that I had worked out the potential double meaning of 'Complex' before I'd even started watching it.

It's often made in Wales. They happily admit that they have to alternate big-budget exotic locations and CGI with episodes that only have one set and two characters.

You and I both. But which meaning occurred to you first?

There's a double meaning?

MeechMunchie 09-18-2011 08:56 AM

When used as a noun, yes.
:

Noun

complex (plural complexes or (archaic) complices)

1. A collection of buildings with a common purpose, such as a university or military base.
2. A psychologically based issue or dislike of a particular thing.
So The God Complex could refer to both a person obsessed with power and being worshipped, or some kind of facility that assists/fights/acts as/controls/supports/detains/enslaves God.

Strike Witch 09-18-2011 04:49 PM

Oh! that's clever!

Nate 09-19-2011 02:03 AM

Way to defeat the purpose of my spoiler tags, MeechMunchie.

Given that it's a common enough phrase referring to the second definition, that one first. I had figured that the episode would relate to the Doctor's hubris that has been hinted at here and there, most notably in River's speech at the end of A Good Man Goes To War.

JennyGenesis 09-19-2011 07:17 AM

Clearly I didn't learn my lesson after watching diaster movie because I just watched Vampires Suck...

I want my 78 minutes back!

Dixanadu 09-19-2011 09:17 AM

Vampire's Suck was amusing in some parts, but overall it wasn't that good.

Strike Witch 09-19-2011 01:53 PM

The thing with those films is that once you see the trailer, you've seen all the parts worth seeing.

It's only Doctor Who. No-one cares.

For some reason the 'Facility' definition came to me first, albeit followed by the other a few seconds later.

EDIT: It seems that for me a symptom of tiredness is not believing that words really look like words. I've already had to check the spelling of 'business' and 'facility' despite spelling them both right.

OddjobAbe 09-20-2011 01:07 PM

I watched The Iron Giant (again) with my nephew. I think it's actually a very good film considering its target audience, especially because of the Cold War stuff which's in there which goes right over my nephew's head. One of the few cartoons other than Ren and Stimpy I actually enjoy watching with him.

Sekto Springs 09-20-2011 09:07 PM

Brad Bird has been one of the few saving graces in western animation for the last few decades.

Dixanadu 09-21-2011 06:38 AM

The next installment of that dinosaur documentary is on tonight on BBC1. I really enjoyed the last one, a bit shocked the big ferocious Spinosaurus was a god-damn fish-eater.

MeechMunchie 09-21-2011 01:59 PM

Bear in mind these are big fish we're talking about.

Good show, though. They had the TERROR BIRDS on today. God I love those things. A giant turkey that can crack your skull like a seed husk.

Dixanadu 09-22-2011 03:45 AM

The Gigantoraptor was weird as fuck looking.

Totally took me by surprise when it killed that dinosaur looking after it's eggs. It was like a T-rex sized turkey!

Dynamithix 09-22-2011 05:52 AM

I've been watching Futurama again and man, I can't decide my favourite character; Zoidberg or Bender.

Sekto Springs 09-22-2011 09:31 AM

Go with Zoidberg. Bender's popular enough as it is.

MeechMunchie 09-22-2011 09:47 AM

Zoidberg's my second favourite. Scruffy is the best.
