Because justifying their habit will make them healthier? The placebo effect doesn't work with lung cancer AiN.

Never underestimate psychosomaticism.

JennyGenesis 07-11-2011 01:09 AM

Before I begin this post, a little background to help you understand the situation.

In the UK you can smoke at 16 but you have to be 18 to buy cigarettes.

I have a friend who is 17 and is a full time smoker, he ran out on the day before yesterday ago but couldn't find anybody to buy him some. We were speaking on Xbox Live and he said that he was actually shaking because he needed one so badly. I said that I was going out later and that I would stop by his house and buy him some.

Stupid me....................I forgot............

Yesterday we met up, gave me his money and I bought him some cigarettes, he lit up and took a puff and said "Ahhhh that's better, it's been so long that I'm actually getting a head rush right now"

People who want to feel justified in casually smoking, of course.

I don't need any justification. I don't give a shit. Casually drinking is very bad for liver... maybe YOU know need some justifications. Tell me it's not right then. Because you are casual drinkers and not casual smoker. I, as casual smoker, I don't care about what is going to happen to me. And you, as casual drinkers, you don't want to talk about effect of casually drinking.

Maybe you don't know how much ethanol does hurt to your body! I know how much nicotine hurts to me, the same of drinking. Maybe alcohol doesn't hurt your lungs, but you don't live only due to your lungs.

Having one drink a day is not shown to cause any significant health defects and may possibly provide benefits. Having even just one cigarette a day does damage. I don't see why anyone is trying to debate this point.

abe is now! 07-11-2011 02:43 AM

YOU think that it isn't shown to cause any significant health defects and may possibly provide benefits.

Nate 07-11-2011 02:57 AM

US and pretty much all of mainstream science. Prove us wrong.

EDIT: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alcoholic_liver_disease

:

Even though millions of individuals drink alcohol on a regular basis, only chronic heavy drinkers develop liver damage.

Wikipedia isn't a reliable source per se, but that sentence is the most succinct explanation of my point I could find. However, every single article I found by googling 'Alcoholic Liver Disease' concurs.

STM 07-11-2011 03:19 AM

Fortifying Nate's point with more reliable sources:

http://www.bbcgoodfood.com/content/w...wine-health/1/
http://www.wired.com/wiredscience/20...-good-for-you/
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/727912.stm

Now let's try to find an article saying a little smoke is good for you!

Will you find any nicotine lung disease informations about smoking from 3 to 5 cigarettes a day but not every day?

I apologize for having forgotten to tell you that I don't smoke every day. I'm sincere with you. I sometimes don't smoke a cigarettes for a week and then I smoke three cigarattes, then I don't for two days, then I smoke two cigarettes, then nothing, then five cigarettes (FOR EXAMPLE)

@Scrabtrapman: now let's try to be less ass-licker and boring.
AND I NEVER SAID SMOKE IS GOOD FOR ANYONE! I don't want to insult you, don't give me a chance.

moxco 07-11-2011 04:54 AM

People consume alcoholic beverages because primarily they enjoy the taste, but also because some because they like becoming intoxicated. In comparison smoking does neither; you only feel relaxed because you are experiencing withdrawal symptoms.

Also, don't call STM an ass-licker for supporting the obvious truth. If only same could be said when it came to faith.

The truth? We can't say what is the truth. You can't. I can't. I was explaing my point of view and you were putting shit all over me! Like you were some doctor or professor.

Smoking even one cigarette a day trebles the risk of heart disease or lung cancer - and the effect is greater in women.
http://esciencenews.com/articles/200...healthy.adults
:

Even one cigarette has serious adverse effects on young adults, according to research presented by Dr. Stella Daskalopoulou at the Canadian Cardiovascular Congress 2009, co-hosted by the Heart and Stroke Foundation and the Canadian Cardiovascular Society. Her study found that smoking one cigarette increases the stiffness of the arteries in 18 to 30 year olds by a whopping 25 per cent.

OH SHIT YOU WERE RIGHT I WILL DIE SOON OH MY GOD!!!

And now??? Oh shit. I'm scared...

But...

I'm strong! xD

I love you OWF

Wings of Fire 07-11-2011 08:34 AM

Lung cancer is not something you should be joking about.

abe is now! 07-11-2011 09:11 AM

Sorry...

Bullet Magnet 07-11-2011 09:53 AM

Lymphoma's funnier.

STM 07-11-2011 10:48 AM

You know what AiN, fuck you. You think I'm arse licking? Let me tell you a little story about my Grandma. I loved her so much and used to go to her house every day, then she got lung disease from smoking, she died a very slow and painful death, she couldn't speak, we could barely see her and she was bed bound for months. It took years to get over that. So once again, fuck you.

I'm so very sorry for brandishing facts about what will eventually kill you if you keep on smoking. You're right, I'm a massive arse lick, yeah because I always jump on the band wagon.

Oh and I was annoying you? Boo fucking hoo, so sorry but the truth hurts.

T-nex 07-11-2011 11:13 AM

Ok people, calm down. If you need to fight, take it to PMs...

I don't give a shit about your life or your stories. And you don't tell me fuck you from your PC, come here and tell me IN FRONT OF ME. It ends here for me. Bye.

EDIT: You're only good at neg repping, you make me laugh.

STM 07-11-2011 11:17 AM

I'm not trying to fight but I got angry, angry at myself partially because I'm a hypocrite, I smoked two today for fuck sake. But at least I'm honest with myself, I know that it is killing me in some way or another.

But err, I can't say fuck you in front of your face, you live on the continent.

abe is now! 07-11-2011 11:21 AM

You'll understand you won't die for those two cigarettes. This is the problem dear Scrabtrapman (your name? I'm Fabio). It's only a common thought.

T-nex 07-11-2011 11:23 AM

Ain, the physical cigarette that you are smoking is not what will kill you. But each and every cigarette you do smoke will increase your risk for health issues. Even one will do it.

abe is now! 07-11-2011 11:25 AM

Everyone talk about % of risk. But we know that also with the 99% of death risk a man could survive, because of that 1%.

@Scrabtrapman: try looking in your control panel.

STM 07-11-2011 11:25 AM

Aidan, and the thing is it all adds up, that's what I'm trying to say, all the damage you are doing by smoking one or two, then none, then four, adds up.

I'm not venting at you you realise, I care enough to try and point out what smoking is doing to your health, I'd rather you didn't end up like my Gran did, she wasn't exactly a chain smoker.

T-nex 07-11-2011 11:30 AM

The thing is, even one cigarette poses enough of a risk that you should at least be aware and accept that its really, really not healthy at all. THis is not a mere 'even the air poses a health risk'. Smoking poses a serious risk, and you are so much better off health wise not smoking.

STM 07-11-2011 11:31 AM

Exactly, I try not to smoke but now when other people light up I want a cigarette too.

Dixanadu 07-11-2011 12:32 PM

Fuck up and have a fag.

Ridg3 07-11-2011 03:34 PM

If people want to smoke, let them smoke. If they know about the health risks, at least they can't turn around and say they didn't know. As long as you're aware, I say.

I agree with with this...
I think we were just trying to explain to AIN where he was wrong.

If people like smoking, that is their business. :p

Emesdee 07-11-2011 04:17 PM

I don't smoke, but I've taken up pretending to smoke partially for sociability, but mainly because smokers get about 20 breaks at work compared to the single lunch break non-smokers have.

This is one thing that has always bothered me. Not enough to consider smoking, considering the associated smell and detriment to my health and whatnot...

I were wrong for saying that drinking hurts as smoking oh yeah probably, so if people want to drink, let them drink. Then we'll hear about some families killed by drunk bastards. And also for saying that living keeping an eye on % of risk in everything will keep you in your home in front of your PC. But some scientist said that spending too much time in fron of PCs you burn your neurons (and I'm not fucking kidding); what will I do in my life? I'll sleep!

moxco 07-12-2011 12:03 AM

You know, there is a chance I could be struck by lightning! So I might as shoot myself in the head and be over with it.

It is not my responsibility that people choose to abuse a substance that was meant to be consumed in moderation.

Like I've said before, you can make anything sound bad by bringing in the extreme.

Mailmen are bad because they steal you mail, dogs are bad because they bite you and cause infections. Smoking is bad because people smoke 3 packs a aday and get cancer from it.
Now is this fair, Ain?

Also I didn't say to keep an eye out for every risk. Trust me. i eat junk food, I drink a lot of pepsi... All of which are really bad. (im actually aware that I drink more pepsi than I should, but that is my little secret addiction :P) ...

I just said that smoking even one cigarette poses enough of a risk that one should probably not do it. But if you do it, fully knowing of its implications and risks, then it is not our business anymore.

Also smoking is not the same as being struck by lightening.... Being struck by lightening is so rare, that I have no idea why you would even bring that up. Besides, even from being struck by lightening, you have a chance to survive.

Pepsi (and so Coca Cola) is this.

I hope you knew that; and also keep an eye on it xD
