I enjoyed Episodes 1 & 2 a lot, but I preferred Episode 2. The outdoors were just so well done.

The only shot I fired was the padlock to open the door that led to the electrical box when you first got the pistol.

The achievement description says you can still use rockets, crowbars, grenades and the gravity gun.

As for the Antlion King...there were quite a lot of explosive barrels about. The only challenge was sprinting away from the bitch when it charged.

Yes, you do catch a glimpse of one trying its best to gut Dr Mossman in Episode One.

How did she get to a different location away from City 17 so quickly anyway? Then again, how much time passed between the end of HL2 and the beginning of Ep 1?

EP1 is technically set directly after Half-Life 2. But since GMan did freeze time, who knows.
