I don't get your logic. You're saying that paying $100* for a game is justified when you get $3 worth of plastic and cardboard to hold but not when you get the same experience without cluttering up your shelves?

*Referring to new games here, of course.

Leto 11-24-2009 07:45 PM

yeah, i'd much prefer to get something instead of data, especially where music is concerned. people are calling me a nana for not hopping on steam, i'll have to adjust eventualy

enchilado 11-24-2009 08:26 PM

I don't purchase games, myself. I play free games such as Battle for Wesnoth and the Mana World. My copy of AE dad bought for me when I was seven or eight. And AO I... er... I... someone gave it to me. Yeah. Someone gave it to me.

~but seriously: how much will SW cost, d'you think?

Paul 11-24-2009 09:07 PM

You know if no one paid for games there wouldn't be anymore great games :P I don't think you understand just how much it costs to develop this stuff.

Leto 11-24-2009 09:12 PM

i think you've missed the point entirely; i own all oddworld releases there are (bar abe a-go-go etc). i'm just saying i don't want to pay money to get a download link. i'd much prefer to pay a bit more and get a deluxe boxed edition of some sort.

and in enchilada's case: i'm guessing he's quite young/jobless and as such doesn't buy things for himself at his age

enchilado 11-24-2009 09:20 PM

Quite young. I have enough to buy maybe ... one and a half computer games. And anyway, I won't be buying it even if I don't download it, so it doesn't make a difference to the company.

~I did say I might buy it... I'll wait to see the price :P

Well if I can't afford a car it doesn't mean I just steal one! I know you won't think its the same thing but actually it is.

Havoc 11-24-2009 09:28 PM

Actually I like Steam more and more. I can see myself getting, at least my PC games, through Steam. As hard as it is to believe, seeing my long gaming history, I do not have a dedicated shelf of game cases. In fact, I lose most of them and with them the serial numbers.

Another advantage of Steam, IMO, is that you can come back to some old game 5 years later without worrying about compatibility, looking for the old CD, whatever. Just install and play. You think I could get my CD copy of AO or AE running on a Windows 7 machine? No way in hell. The Steam version on the other hand is 100% compatible.

I actually agree with you; I prefer to get a disc rather than just a download. I've got discs for all of the Telltale Games that I've bought - you pay for the games, get a download link and can get the disclater for only the cost of postage.

But that's just a preference. The absence of physical media doesn't justify piracy.

Leto 11-24-2009 09:31 PM

there is that convenience yes, which is why people are seeing it as the way forward. i want boxes/cds.

you're still completely missing the point...

i'm not saying i'm going to download it at all. i'm just saying i'm not going to pay money for link that i could otherwise find somewhere else. i'm not saying i'm going to find that link. i'm not saying i'm going to pirate anything. jesus just read my posts, they're all up there. fuck.

I'm all about supporting this but it totally goes against my beliefs to pay money for a download when you can just google torrents for it, yeah. Like shit to be physical.

Leto 11-24-2009 09:42 PM

GOD DAMNIT

i said you can google torrents, yes. did i say i was going to google torrents? it's up there bolded for you.

enchilado 11-24-2009 10:16 PM

I absolutely ADORE discs. You have no idea how thrilled I am that AOEIII has three discs. Are there any games with more?

~my circa 2000 copy of AE works on Vista - you sure it won't on 7?

Havoc 11-25-2009 06:52 AM

Leto I don't understand your reasoning. According to you, it would be fine to take an empty car next to a car dealership. Why pay for something you can get for free? Well, because it's not yours to just 'take'. Just because it's easyto download and no-one will come running after you, screaming at you to give him his car back, does not make it any less of a crime to do.

MeechMunchie 11-25-2009 07:51 AM

You ought to be able to buy a little presentation box, but inside it just has the keycode engraved.

You want to fuck a tiger. The moral high ground just isn't where you belong on any subject.

Sekto Springs 11-25-2009 10:06 AM

I've never understood why exchanging piracy tips is such a taboo. They're going to torrent and steal regardless of the number of infractions they have on their conscience. Do you do it for the sake of appearances or is it some kind of built-in universal rule for vb?

For the record, I am far too poor to buy half of the music I like or the games I play.

STM 11-25-2009 10:46 AM

I already have all the games, if you have them why do you need to buy them on steam? Just asking.

Well I'm going to buy MO and SW on Steam just for the fact of having them on PC, where I can access them easily without having to set up my Xbox.

used:) 11-25-2009 05:42 PM

I'm buying it because I've never owned an xbox and thus never played MO or SW. Plus, it would be nice to have all four together.

Leto 11-25-2009 06:25 PM

haha, i love how you guys keep going on about the car comparison... like you can steal a car in the comfort of your own home with no immediate ill benefits. please direct all your piracy nerd rage at leto@idontgiveashit.com, instead of directly to me on a forum.

Nate 11-25-2009 08:12 PM

For all of your idontgiveashit-ness, I notice you've not yet responded to my last post, bitch.

Daxter King 11-25-2009 10:49 PM

Anyone know if there are gonna be graphical upgrades for SW or MO? The sytem requirements should be pretty low if there aren't any right?

i said you can google torrents, yes. did i say i was going to google torrents? it's up there bolded for you.

Anyway, I kind of agree how it's nice to have the actual cd(s), but I can see the advantages of digital distribution as well. One of them being you never have to worry about your cd getting lost/scratched/exploded by a cd-rom (this actually happened to my family's Abe's Oddysee cd :().

So I think I'm going to be buying the Odd Box when it comes out. I was going to buy the package of just the first two games, to make up for the fact that our AO cd exploded and the AE one seems to have gone for a walk up the mountains, but then having seen this thread I decided to just wait and get all four at once :D

Music on the other hand, while I may sometimes download songs that I've never heard before if I really like the songs on a particular album I'll usually buy the physical cd. Partly because of quality of sound and partly because there are some awesome cd cases. Though I guess you could say the same about games for the latter. Anyway, that's my ramble done :p

Leto 11-26-2009 12:27 AM

you can purchase downloads of flac albums (fully lossless audio codec) most of the time if quality is the issue.

@Daxter King: I'm very positive that there will be no graphical updates at all. that being said, even though they are old games, suspect that may be a little more resource intensive than you think, particularly SW. if you're hoping to run it on an archaic graphics card, i probably wouldn't bank on it

Strike Witch 11-26-2009 02:37 AM

Honestly, I understand that Leto likes physical copies. But this is probably the only way you're gonna get it, so it's okay too.

I might have to buy SW./

Venks 11-26-2009 07:56 AM

Meh piracy is stealing. Stealing is illegal. Screw you guys. I'm buying the Oddbox because I love Oddworld. Simple as that.

Ah, capitalism. Where the poor aren't allowed to enjoy themselves without breaking the law or being spoonfed patronizing moralized bs.

MeechMunchie 11-26-2009 12:19 PM

I got no problem with piracy, unless the company needs the money.

used:) 11-26-2009 12:24 PM

Like OWI? Lol.

MeechMunchie 11-26-2009 12:27 PM

...Well yeah. That's kind of the point.

That wasn't a shout out to you.

enchilado 11-26-2009 02:11 PM

Meh, me and my brother agree that games should be made open-source 10 years after the release date. Not that that would affect MO and SW. And no one has answered me yet: how much do you think they will cost? I could probably scrap together enough to pay $30 each for them, but if its more than that...

~so... I'll see when they come out this Summer ;P

Meh piracy is stealing. Stealing is illegal.

Technically... not. Piracy is copyright infringement, which is brought before the courts as a civil case.

But something doesn't need to be illegal to be morally prerehensible.

EDIT: Actually, it probably is illegal, just not a crime. Blasted legal distinctions.
