That's because I'm a hipster.

and it isn't too dumb or insulting

That's exactly the problem I had with Scott Pilgrim.

I don't think so. You may not have found it to be particularly clever, but it wasn't particularly dumb, or insulting either.

Plot twist! Main girl is a terrible excuse for a slut of a human being because her ex-boyfriend is controlling her mind via a computer chip.

So how is that not both again?

OANST 02-24-2012 11:23 AM

I didn't get any of that from it. The only thing I got from it was that the dude was so desperate to get her back that he controlled her with a computer chip. It doesn't explain any of her past relationships or behavior, and maybe having seven or eight former lovers sounds like a lot, and makes her seem slutty to you, but it's fairly normal. And I think it was silly. Silly is a bit different from dumb, as it isn't meant to be taken seriously. People are allowed to be silly, and have fun without being completely stupid.

Wings of Fire 02-24-2012 11:31 AM

I don't really care about her having a large number of exes, though the 'that one time in college' thing with the lesbian was poor fucking taste. I care about the fact that everything became so unlikeably dumb once Gideon entered the plot and the reason for it was so fucking cheap. I mean really? Was I supposed to laugh at that? A whole faux-angsty subplot for the sake of one joke?

Also my GOD I hated the constant string of references. I hated how stupid and mainstream they were, like they were trying to make a compromise between 'Selling the movie' and 'Appealing to our target audience' and the humour reached the point of being bland and uncreative.

It's not like I can't have fun with a show, or find stupid things funny. I have a very very wide sense of humour. I just really really didn't like Scott Pilgrim.

sheridanm962 02-24-2012 11:49 AM

Yeah I liked the movie but some parts are just... How do I explain it, it's that stupid.

Well in all honesty it did make me laugh for the most part and make my eyes almost pop out of my head. It's the first time I've seen a movie like this.

OANST 02-24-2012 11:49 AM

In what way is it poor taste? Does that not happen? Do people never explore their own sexuality, and is college not the place that this normally happens? You know what the problem with modern hipsters is? The real hipsters? It's their ability to take offense at media portraying things that happen every day. "I white knight for LGBT people, and this person thought she might be gay, but it turns out she wasn't. That's in poor taste! She should either be a lesbian, or bi, or not, and never have wondered about it!" Also there is the whole "I white knight for women, but really hate them, so seeing them portrayed as having multiple sexual partners must mean that she's a slut even though that's not the way she was portrayed, and I'm totally projecting that onto her, and it's a fucking outrage".

Grow the fuck up. It was a silly movie, and in no way deserving of having some sort of morally outraged tirade thrown against it.

Dynamithix 02-24-2012 11:50 AM

On the topic of Scott Pilgrim, are the books any good? Isn't it based on a series of books?

Crashpunk 02-24-2012 11:51 AM

It's not that bad.

I wouldn't call it a 'great' movie but it had its moments. Okay, the film was just a bunch of gaming references one after the other with a poor plot but aside from that though it was a lot of fun to watch, It was silly. I actually enjoyed it.

Maybe it was just because I am a gamer and got a lot of the references...

The books are great, I love the artstyle. And the Scott Pilgrim Game is actually surprising a really good side scrolling, beat 'em up. It looks really good as well and the soundtrack is amazing.

I would actually say the books and the game are better then the film hands down.

Wings of Fire 02-24-2012 12:01 PM

Way to confuse my argument.

Let's get two things straight:

1, LGBT issues don't even factor into it. Psychotic lesbians in media are so very tired. It's a dumb cliche and being over the top to the point of 'irony' about it doesn't make it any better. She had no personality. All she had was her sexuality, and her sexuality was being bounced around humorously for the rest of the cast and the audience to laugh at. It was pathetic. She was a pathetic character written in for the express purpose of getting cheap laughs. Cheap lowest common denominator laughs, as I can't imagine anyone with half a brain thought 'Haha, she's a lesbian. She's psychotic. That's funny.' (That being said, one of my more recent favourite characters was also a psychotic lesbian in a majority straight cast. She was also a good character and the drama was well played.)

This is indignation from a narrative standpoint, a humourist standpoint and the standpoint of someone with more braincells than tv channels.

2, I am not projecting. I am most definitely not projecting on a useless aggravating little waste of skin like Scott. I don't care how many exes Ramona had, I don't care if she lost her virginity at the age of 11. I really don't care. I just hate the fact that the angst was so forced, the character drama with Scott was so incoherent 'Oh no maybe I'll end up like Gideon' bullshit and the eventual resolution was so ridiculously cheap.

sheridanm962 02-24-2012 12:02 PM

That bitch looked too hot to be a lesbian :(

Crashpunk 02-24-2012 12:03 PM

Take it from me, looks are deceiving.

Fuck my life.

...again

Wasn't it the point that every single one of her exes were psychotic, regardless of sexual preference? Yes, as a matter of fact it was. You object to the lesbian girl being psychotic because....well...she's a lesbian. Way to be progressive, buddy. I'm sure all of your bi and homosexual friends think that your line of reasoning is so very smart, but it isn't. Your angsty little philosofaggot routine got old long ago for pretty much everyone except the shut in losers that let it validate their existence.

You're a humorist? You? You aren't. Let's put a stop to that. You aren't funny. At least not in a non look at that funny eyed dude flopping on the ground way. And of course, you're so smart man. I mean, you major in philosophy! DID ANYONE NOT HEAR? SHOULD WE SAY IT LOUDER? WoF MAJORS IN PHILOSOPHY! HE HAS MANY USELESS OBSERVATIONS ABOUT THE UNIVERSE TO SHARE WITH US.

And oh dear god, yes. You are most certainly projecting. You are projecting your own hatred of women, which is so obvious from the way you try to revere them, onto the creators of this silly movie. You're acting like a spastic child who needs us all to know how smart he is OVER SCOTT FUCKING PILGRIM, A MOVIE WHERE PEOPLE TURN INTO TOKENS WHEN THEY GET BEATEN UP. But your opinion isn't smart. It's just tiresome. You didn't care for the movie? Great. You thought the references were too easy? Great. But this other shit you're spouting? Fuck off.

Wings of Fire 02-24-2012 12:27 PM

The fuck are you even talking about now?

Also I major in psychology. I hate it when people get that wrong.

I bet you do. I just bet you do.

Dynamithix 02-24-2012 12:39 PM

Let's break the angry mood here.

I watched Ice Age 3 with my dad today. I thought it was okay. The first one was my favourite, the second one... not so much.

Wings of Fire 02-24-2012 12:40 PM

There are so many problems with your last post I don't even know where to begin.

So I won't

Also, I'm not nearly as emotionally involved in this argument as you seem to think I am?

So basically, "I win by default because I'm too cool to even argue it, but just know that you're wrong". What does your psylosify class tell you about that?

Edit: And fuck me with a broom handle, did you just pull a Cammy in that last sentence? Fucking christ.

Wings of Fire 02-24-2012 12:47 PM

Win what? The fight to see who can casually insert the most nonsensical ad hominems into their arguments?

Yup. That's the one.

Wings of Fire 02-24-2012 12:49 PM

Crashpunk 02-24-2012 12:53 PM

STOP FIGHTING :crying:

Then congratulations I guess?

Seeing as your entire argument was based on delusions that you have about your own level of intelligence, and a misunderstanding of other people's intentions based on those same delusions, I deemed it necessary to make outside observations of your behavior and personality.

And if I had a nickel for every time I've seen you try to win an argument with what amounts to "I take philosophy. I think I know what I'm talking about" I would be vomiting nickels into your googly eye.

Wings of Fire 02-24-2012 12:58 PM

I really don't understand what you're talking about now.

OANST 02-24-2012 01:02 PM

Yes, you do. You just don't like it.

Wings of Fire 02-24-2012 01:06 PM

No, I really don't.

I think every shot you're firing is missing. You're basing this whole pathetic slew of insults on the premise that I feel indignant about Scott Pilgrim because I'm projecting. I'm not, and all these confused accusations and assumptions are just really fucking hilarious because I can't help remembering when we did this two years ago and I was naive enough to give a fuck about your judgment of my opinions.

OANST 02-24-2012 01:08 PM

and all these confused accusations and assumptions are just really fucking hilarious

I bet you're having a real good laugh.

Wings of Fire 02-24-2012 01:19 PM

It's mostly an ironic laugh about two years ago. I can't believe I used to be insecure enough to let this shit get to me.

I'm also laughing a little at this, hopefully with you. Not because I'm delusional enough to think you would be laughing with me and not at me like I was before, but because I really hope you're not delusional enough to think anything you've said on this page is any way substantial.

OANST 02-24-2012 01:25 PM

Oh, but I do. You have no idea how irritating your little superiority dance that you do every day, in every thread is. And the fact that it's so clearly drawn from your own pain, and need to prove that you're better than those who tormented you makes it really hard to bring it up at all. But yeah, this is something you do. You project shit that doesn't exist onto god damn everything, and then waaaaay over evaluate it so that we can all know how smart you are. Unfortunately, I lost my temper with your condescending attitude, and frankly ridiculous line of reasoning this time around, and managed to say a lot of things that I normally wouldn't have, but fuck can you be infuriating.

Wings of Fire 02-24-2012 01:28 PM

I really don't think I'm the one projecting here.

OANST 02-24-2012 01:30 PM

But then you wouldn't, would you?

Wings of Fire 02-24-2012 01:37 PM

Making that question absolutely vacuous.

OANST 02-24-2012 01:40 PM

oooooohhhhhh burn.

Crashpunk 02-24-2012 01:46 PM

I SAID STOP FIGHTING!!!

Wings of Fire 02-24-2012 01:54 PM

I think we've stopped.

OANST 02-24-2012 01:59 PM

It doesn't stop until infractions.

Nate 02-24-2012 04:20 PM

Infractions for all!

MeechMunchie 02-24-2012 04:31 PM

I thought Scott Pilgrim was mediocre. They sold it as a niche gamer movie, when in fact it only referenced the shallowest elements of gaming, all of them from the '90s. It could have been a cult classic, instead it was just a vaguely funny pile of incohesive stuff.

So does this make me cool or scum or what?

Sekto Springs 02-24-2012 04:43 PM

I agree with MeechMunchie.

Also, I bet Edgar Wright would be flattered to see that his shitty little movie was the source of such controversy on our quaint little forum.
