Can I write about anime movies~?

Havoc 12-20-2011 07:57 AM

Yeah, you can.

MeechMunchie 12-20-2011 02:04 PM

I'll get back to you when I next see a good movie.

A Muppet Christmas Carol on the 24th, so might not be too long.

MA 12-20-2011 02:35 PM

you're watching it again?

then again, i will be too. i was so disappointed when i missed it last year.

Nate 12-20-2011 03:40 PM

I saw Mission Impossible 4. It was pretty good, definitely worth watching.

Part of me misses the convoluted plot of MI1, with a ridiculous number of plot twists and double-crosses. This film doesn't have that. It does have a bunch of great action sequences and cool super-gadget scenes. If I have a problem with the film, it's that all the best scenes are in the first half. The highlight of the film is the section in the Burj Khalifa, but that's in the middle and nothing after that could possibly top it.

The Tracker by Rolf de Heer

great film, but I wasn't that impressed like I was of Ten Canoes (by the same director)

JennyGenesis 12-22-2011 07:08 PM

Hobo With A Shotgun.

Awesome.

I kind of want to see it. Mainly because, interestingly enough, it was directed by Brad Bird. He has done exclusively animated things up until this point. He wrote/directed The Iron Giant, The Incredibles, and The Simpsons (back when it was good). Evidently his transition to live action was a success.

Daxter King 12-23-2011 12:48 AM

Drive.

I loved every moment of it, best film I've seen all year. I had heard buzz when it first released and was surprised and happy it stayed in the dollar movie long enough for me to catch it. Ryan Gosling was an amazing protagonist and the actors in general were great as well. Can't wait to see it again.

Sekto Springs 12-23-2011 12:52 AM

I want to see Tintin also. That way, if I hate it, at least I can explain why.
I was really lukewarm to it at first. Namely because the earlier trailers looked kind of shitty. The more ads I see, however, the more I want to see it. At the very least it could be a great visual romp.

I really, was not keen when I first heard Spielbergs next project was TinTin.

I was all of a sudden VERY interested when I found out Steven Moffat was writing it, and then when I saw Edgar Wright was also writing it with him, I figured it was going to be a pretty good movie.

I saw it a few months back. It was pretty good - it did what it needed to. Chase sequence was a bit long, it kind of just felt like they were trying to prove how good their CGI was rather than actually being entertaining but other than that it was a watchable, enjoyable film.

scrabface 12-24-2011 02:49 AM

I haven't seem it yet, but...

Tintin was really good, I recommend it.

Anyways, I've been watching the Harry Potter movies this week and this was the first time that I saw The Prisoner of Azkaban. I thought it was the worst so far. It was alright, but it was missing the action of the later films and the feel of the first two. It wasn't bad though, just didn't like it that much.

Next I'm going to re-watch Goblet of Fire, which I really liked the first time I saw it. I'm going to skip the fifth one, I hated that one.

Sekto Springs 12-24-2011 08:42 AM

I feel like the uncanny valley argument doesn't really pan out in this instance because the characters have cartoonish proportions. I could just be immune though. The trailers for Mars Needs Moms, however, freaked me the fuck out.

Dynamithix 12-24-2011 02:13 PM

I got Paul as a Christmas present from my dad, along with the first season of Futurama, so we watched it two hours ago or so. I really liked it, but compared to the other Nick Frost & Simon Pegg films, it wasn't as good as Shaun of The Dead or Hot Fuzz. Well, maybe a bit better than Hot Fuzz.

Crashpunk 12-24-2011 03:00 PM

The first season of Futurama is just classic, Episode 2 is my personal favorite. I really enjoyed Paul. I laughed my head off at the scene where Paul is acting like a model alien in a Sci-Fi store to hide from the agents. Also showing that Christian woman a real ailen was just brillent.

Mr. Bungle 12-24-2011 09:33 PM

I think season two of Futurama is my favourite. Doesn't get much better than The Problem With Popplers.

I got Blade Runner on blu-ray for Christmas from my step-brothers. Never seen it before, so I'm pretty pumped to watch it for the first time.

Nate 12-25-2011 01:59 AM

I watched season 1, and am currently watching season 2, of The Micallef Program(me). In my opinion it's the best sketch comedy show ever made.

EDIT: Maybe top two, just behind The D-Generation Late Show. But as an adult I've only seen the Best-Of DVD, so I can't really judge the overall quality of that one.

Dynamithix 12-27-2011 05:19 PM

I finally ended up watching the Evil Dead movies. I really liked 'em. I think the second one is my favourite one.

"Groovy"

MA 12-27-2011 05:47 PM

they're fucking great, i love them. i kept harping on about how fucking cool it would be to have a chainsaw arm after i'd watched them. i still want one.

EDIT: and the mirror scene is still brilliant even today.

Sekto Springs 12-27-2011 07:35 PM

I actually didn't like the second Evil Dead as much as the first. It was far more on par with the kind of humor and cinematography in Army of Darkness, but I was disappointed in the lack of gore. Also, nothing in cinema to this day has surpassed the nausea-inducing decomposing sequence from the end of the original.

Dynamithix 12-28-2011 02:04 AM

I thought the laughing scene was great. And Sam turning to a deadite.

Mac Sirloin 12-28-2011 09:00 AM

I saw that hideous new Chipmunks movie. Me (and the people I went with) were the only people in the whole theatre. We spent the entire time farting loudly, more or less. The movie was terrible but could have been more terrible.

MA 12-28-2011 01:33 PM

i wouldn't be able to sit through more than a couple of minutes. their voices, man. fucking voices. no need to be that stupidly pissing squeaky.

STM 12-28-2011 03:25 PM

Try living in a house with a brother whose voice has yet to break. XD

Sekto Springs 12-28-2011 07:44 PM

Saw Tintin. Loved the fuck out of it. Anyone who thinks they can't watch it because it delves into the uncanny valley is a moron who needs to re-examine reality.

I loved Andy Serkis' performance as Captain Haddock. There was loads of really well-written humor, and some pretty bad ass action sequences too. The chase scene near the end was one unbroken shot that lasted at least two or three minutes. It was like watching a Rube Goldberg machine of CG action awesomeness. It ended with room for a sequel, but not in such a way that the adventure felt incomplete.

I highly recommend it.

Phylum 12-28-2011 10:23 PM

I saw the Rocky Horror Picture Show for the second time the other night at an annual screening. The "theatre" was an enclosed space in a park which held about 300 people. I went with a group of friends and we sat right at the front. Right fucking there.

I can't stress enough how much I love the movie. It's no brilliant work of art, but it's really fun. The soundtrack is the deal-sealer for me and is easily enough to stop me tiring of the film. Since seeing the movie on Tuesday I've listened to the soundtrack 3 times.

I could rave about the movie for hours, but I'm sure you've all heard of it at least.

The best part about seeing the movie in a open theatre is the audience. Every time Brad and Janet are introduced the audience yell "Asshole!" and "Slut!" respectively. When Dr. Franken Furter is chasing Rocky two members of the audience ran around recreating the scene. Everyone runs upto the front to dance the Time Warp. People throw pieces of toast at "A toast!" Whenever the Criminologist comes on screen people yell "Where's your neck?!" In the final song, Superheroes, some people called out questions between song lines, so that this happened:

Audience: "What did you have for tea last night?"
Criminologist: "Some insects…"
Audience: "Where's your neck?"
Criminologist: "Lost in time"
Audience: "What's your favourite TV show?"
Criminologist: "Lost in space"

It was a really nice, relaxed atmosphere. My friends and I are definitely making an annual event of seeing it there.

Sekto Springs 12-28-2011 10:46 PM

I've seen that movie at least a dozen times, and I never got the appeal.

Dynamithix 12-29-2011 05:06 PM

I completed watching the first season of Futurama. I really liked it, but it wasn't as good as the later seasons. Can't say anything about the newest season though, I've only watched one or two episodes of it.

Mr. Bungle 01-03-2012 01:39 PM

The latest season was fantastic, I'd definitely recommend watching it in its entirety.
