Keep it as The Oddworld Encyclopaedia/Encyclopedia. Either that or just the Oddworld wiki.
Something simple works better in my opinion. |

I googled MO wikipedia page to search for inspiration for the wiki title, but I found that:
:
Also, Vykkerpedia. Now say it out loud |
I feel horrified on Wil's behalf that y'all are mispelling 'Encyclopædia'.
|
Don't know about the others, but I'm doing it on purpose, as I don't have the "æ" button.
Also, both appear to be correct |
If you're on a Mac, hold down "A" for one second, then select "5". I haven't used Windows in a few years, so I don't know if the same input shortcut applies, but the Mac is designed to accommodate every accent and variation of all the standard letters. It's pretty cool.
|
On Windows if you hold down "A" then press 5 this happens:
aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa5 |
I'm not on a Mac. We don't like yer Macs around here in Poland
|
Also ALT+0230 = æ
Anyway. Have you looked at Gamepedia? Several games use that for their wikis and I really like it's layout. Just something to think about. You have to suggest the game and gain permission to make the wiki though. Perhaps OWI can give their blessing? Examples: Minecraft Wiki Dota 2 Wiki |
ALT+0230 is ć on my polish keyboard. Which is kind of redundant since I can get that letter by alt+c.
|
Shryklopedia
I'd just go with Oddworld Wiki (or Oddworld Encyclopedia to distinguish it from the Oddworld Wiki[a]). Something easily found on Google by people looking up general info, y'know? |
Alt+0230 doesn't do anything on my PC. Alt-codes never work for me and I have no idea why.
|
Do you have Num Lock on? Are you using the numpad on the right of your keyboard or the number keys above the letter keys?
|
Ok guys I've set up an Alpha Version of the Wiki, you should be able to start contributing if you want :)
You can access it here: http://oddworldlibrary.net/wiki/ I've taken the liberty of sharing my view of the rough structure the wiki could have over here: http://oddworldlibrary.net/wiki/Guideline Some of the articles of TOE are already migrated but not all of them yet, feel free to help by doing some basic copy pasting and formatting :) Also you will find some pretty old articles dating from when Wil was toying with the idea back in the days. Again, at this point all feedback and suggestions are welcome. |

How long is the confirmation code email supposed to take?
|
Once you subscribe you should be able to contribute immediately. :)

Hmm this is very weird, I tried it myself with a test user account and when trying with a hotmail email the mail never got trough, I changed the mail to a gmail account and requested a new confirmation mail and I got it.
My guess is that the confirmation mails look too much like spam and that some providers filter them out. I'm going to see if I can change this. |
I don't remember writing half of this.
|
The mail issue is due to Hotmail having part of our provider blacklisted for some reason. The workaround for now is that I manually forward the bounced email back to the person who requested it.
This seemed to have worked fine for Ridley who has already done some great job :D |
This looks awesome. I'll definitely contribute to all the ALIVE and ALIVE 2 pages :)
|
You should have the confirmation mail now mlg man :)
In the meanwhile Wil is looking into ways to have us removed from the blacklist :) |
FAO Ridley
Regarding the apostrophes (and hyphens and such), don't worry about manually changing any more. I'll make a bot to sort them all out in one swoop. |
Fair enough. :fuzwink:
|
Seems like the blacklisting issue will take some time to be resolved. In the meanwhile I'll continue to forward mails manually to people who want to register. :)

While Xavier is busy getting his own wiki on track I've made a couple of contributions to the Oddworld Wikia. For now I edited the page about Fleeches and included a lot of info from TOE, including the proper attribution in the talk page of course. Too bad a lot of the original sources have been lost in time. Also fixed the page for New 'n' Tasty and Abe's Exoddus HD.
Edit: On another note, the Oddworld Wikia apparently now has an owner that is invested in cleaning up the mess on the wiki, but has little time to do it alone. If Xavier is willing I'm pretty sure he'd love to have you on the admin team to help out. |
I think it would be good to set up a wiki on gamepedia or something of the sort. wikia.com seems to be overly filled with ads these days.
|
:
But this, this one is affiliated with the Forum, which is probably the only place you can find people interested in this wiki anyway. |
Problem with Wikis is that for any given subject, like you say, there's 3 different wiki sites. There are very little general differences to be found between Wikis. The general idea is the same everywhere; everyone can add and edit articles. Easy as that. Gamepedia has ads just like Wikia has. Maybe less of them, but ads all the same.
As a community I think you want to avoid having 3 or 4 different wikis around the internet, usually all with conflicting information. Fact is that right now there are 2 wiki's available for Oddworld. The Oddworld Encyclopedia No offence to Xavier and Will, but that site is immensely outdated. The information on it is limited to in-universe lore and even then it's not complete. For example, there are no articles on any of the industrial factories or organizations like the Magog Cartel. It's all very basic, which of course is not to say it wasn't a lot of work to gather all that information, but that site is almost as old as Oddworld itself and hasn't been updated all that much since then. The last major updates, according to the site itself, were in 2008. It's outdated in almost every way, information, look, software framework, even some links to sources are broken and have been that way for a long time. The Oddworld Wikia This Wikia was started in 2005 and was originally quite a mess due to the high amount of fiction and made up facts that people wrote down. It was also frequently vandalized and didn't get the attention it needed. The Wikia was considered a joke here on the forum for good reason. But somewhere in 2011 that Wikia got a new admin that did try his best to clean up the mess best he could. Many of the articles on there are now fairly accurate, even if a lot of them still miss citation and a lot of others still do need to be cleaned up. But as it stands, the Wikia is currently the most up to date Oddworld wiki in existence. When you Google for 'Oddworld Wiki', the Encyclopedia doesn't even show up on the first two pages. Now, I can see the desire to start an own wiki that is maintained by some of the most involved and knowledgeable individuals in the fanbase, but if only a select number of hand picked individuals get to edit it, what's the point? Eventually it's going to fall into disrepair just like the current Encyclopedia. The entire point of a wiki is that it's open for editing by anyone and that changes are easily reverted. As for starting another Wiki on Gamepedia, that would mean we get three competing Wikis all with differing grades of information. I don't think that's in any way desirable. I would much rather see that effort of starting a new wiki, or upgrading the current Encyclopedia, be put into fixing and cleaning the Wikia. It's not as bad as it used to be by a long shot, except for a few pages. But that's where a dedicated editing crew can make a difference. If contributing to an Oddworld wiki is something people really want to do, we should at least make sure we focus that effort in once place and not spread it around 3 different ones. Just my $0,02. |

I think he means the plural should be "fora".

But I must admit that my preference for ligature is less to do with what's more Latin-correct and more about me being a pretentious git. |

I've reworked the front page but I'm not totally happy with it yet: http://oddworldlibrary.net/wiki/ On the other hand I really like how standard pages now look: http://oddworldlibrary.net/wiki/Abe Most of the old content of the Oddworld Encyclopedia has now been moved to the mediawiki platform and I am now looking in some good solutions to interlink this with the content of TOGG :) Again, any feedback or help is welcome! Registration is open to anyone. :) |
Very fancy, looks great. A thousand times better than what it was. Did you have to manually port over all the content?
|
Thank you :)
The old encyclopedia was only static pages so unfortunately the port could not be automated. |
That definitely looks better. Well done Xav! I'll have to actually have a proper dig through the site I think. + rep for you.
