Gr8 work :D But i think the torso in lighter model is too small :)
Isn't there any possibility to aviod this polygon limitation and add a HighRes Option in game? :(

Oddey 09-15-2009 06:52 AM

Looks great, but would it be possible to make the underside textures just a tad greener? And maybe the outside just a bit redder. Other than that, It's great.:D

And Tidus, where have you been?

Tidus 09-15-2009 12:49 PM

I don't know. =)

Well, working on other things.

This is not really a return, though..

Scrab Animation Update

Just in case you haven't seen it yet you can see some Scrab animation here.

criticism more than welcome, its encouraged! :D

abe619 09-16-2009 12:20 AM

finally some real project , u guys r cool , btw what will be the sys reqs?

Jordan 09-16-2009 02:03 AM

I really like those Scrab animations, well done! :D
I don't really like the texture all that much, it seems a little shiny.

As we're still in early development we can't really say that yet. Sorry. It wil however be determined before the "golden" build is released.

sweet yeah i thought that too but you have to consider the character in a lot of different situations. For every character you'd have to consider their silhouette, for instances where the character is in complete darkness.

So its better off shiny, trust me you'll notice it in the game where all you can see is a small shimmer chasing you while you shit your pants getting chased by a Scrab.

If you'd like to see shiny look at this attachment! :P

We only have three requirements:
1) You know your way around the 3d Environment in either 3D Studio Max or Maya.
2) You know the Oddworld Canon, Characters and environments.
3) You are willing to put some time and effort in this project.

I'd definitely love to try and learn how to do 3d stuff. But uh... I'm not exactly made out of money. Is there any other good 3d art program that doesn't cost an arm and a leg?

STM 09-16-2009 07:26 AM

Oh God please make it for XP! =) Do you need help with cover designs + copyirght, that's my department with Joshkrz =)

Software Bug 09-16-2009 07:32 AM

@Venks, Now I don't know how old you are or what you do, but Autodesk made the 3Ds Max student version free I believe.

@Scrabtrapman, It will be for Mac OSX and Windows so also for XP ;) We don't need any graphic art at the moment. Thank you for offering anyway! :)

MeechMunchie 09-16-2009 08:32 AM

I think the Scrab's calves ought to be a little fatter, and it should have more of an underbite.

SpAM_CAN 09-16-2009 11:04 AM

I had a geek-asm just looking at this , and I am very happy to hear this will be released on Mac OS X.

This project looks incredible, and I can't wait to see more.

Software Bug 09-16-2009 12:25 PM

Hey guys! I really love you and your feedback, and I love teasing you guys. But don't hate me, the teasing will result in something nice, so here is just a small tease.

In a couple of days (think 1, 2, 3 depending on development), Griever M3n and I will release a little something for your pleasure, now don't hype it to much, its a VERY small thing, but I think you will like it :) Stay tuned.

Phylum 09-17-2009 12:37 AM

I agree with meechmunchie, the screb needs more of an underbite. And the heads too big. Compare it with this

moxco 09-17-2009 01:04 AM

Yes I agree that the scrab is shiny. It looks although it is made from rubber.

Jordan 09-17-2009 01:37 AM

I actually really like that Scrab model, it's very accurate. Granted that it does need a bit of beefing up around its leg areas, and I agree with the underbite thing. But I'd be happy with it as it is.

Software Bug 09-17-2009 02:58 AM

So Griever M3n and I worked very hard the last couple of hours and our little suprise for you guys is ready!
Enjoy and thank you for your feedback, we appreciate it ;)

Awesome :D The Scrab is doing weird things with head (turning it left for no reason) while turning left/right, but it's great anyway! :D

haha yeah well i made the animation with the full game in mind, he's only ever going to have to turn 180 degrees so thats the animation. looks silly as it is but atleast you can get the idea

UPDATE
so yeah the scrab! you all had your comments which were awesome, especially that picture of him from TOGG.

made a new Zbrushed look for the scrab, just some minor texture changes and an import into the engine away from being awesomecakes.

check him out here http://fc06.deviantart.com/fs50/i/20...riever_m3n.jpg

Full Size!

Also you'll all be relatively glad to know that i'm working on Abe at the moment.

You'll be less glad to know that's its redonkulously hard.

Cya soon (probably a bit later if Abe keeps on going the way he's going)

Software Bug 09-17-2009 06:37 AM

Actually its different, due to the walking script currently in place, every (basic) animation is always playing, that means, idle, walk and run. all other animation are stacked on top of that and have a higher priority to play.

What that mean is that when you press go left or right, it places the turning animation on top of the idle animation (the head going left is from the idle animation). It does this because in the turning animations only the legs get commands to move, the head has nothing to do so it says, ok I have no animation now lets use idle.

should be fixed when I'm a little less tired from scripting all night haha!

Josh 09-17-2009 08:57 AM

This looks awesome. Please hurry and finish it!

Venks 09-17-2009 10:46 AM

This looks incredibly awesome. Wish I could play the Windows version, but my computer dislikes any file/folder with the same name.

Software Bug 09-17-2009 10:50 AM

Could you explain why you can't play it? It should be working on any Mac OSX and/ or Windows system

Varrok 09-17-2009 11:22 AM

On my computer your (Windows) ScrabDemoWIN_v1.zip works... weird - in it there are some files with the same name etc. (but it worked) - Could you pack it with other program?

I used Winrar :)

STM 09-17-2009 12:19 PM

OMG thx 4 the demo!!!! OMG this is really good

Update: I cant open it with winzip heeeeelp

Software Bug 09-17-2009 01:21 PM

Looking into it now, Does it give you an error of some kind?

Edit: It works fine on my WindowsXP, Don't know why it doesn't on yours, anyway packed it up in a .rar, maybe you have better luck with this one.
Windows Build (.rar)(8.7mb) http://www.modern-way.net/AORemake/Win_ScrabDemo_v1.rar

Going to bed now, hope it works, if not I will check this thread first thing in the morning so will be taken care of then. Good night :)

Oh yeah it works beautifully now. Thanks very much.
I love the animations and just jumping to the beat of the music was kind of fun. My family noticed me playing it and thought it was pretty cool. But they also remarked that the Scrab didn't look dark enough. Not trying to sound lame, just putting it out there.

Oh and by the way I've recently downloaded Autodesk 3ds Max. Would you by chance have any good links to tutorials or tips for learning how to use the software?

Software Bug 09-17-2009 10:22 PM

Ok great, Yeah the lightning is nothing like in the real game, we just used two directional lights in the engine to get some lightness. A lot more detail will be put in the lightning of the real game so I can assure you that the light issue will be totally fixed ;)

For tutorials I would recommend Tutorialized (http://www.tutorialized.com/tutorials/3DS-MAX/1) It has over 1000 tutorials, enjoy & good luck!

moxco 09-17-2009 11:44 PM

Nice. But I'm finding the controls a bit dodgy.

STM 09-17-2009 11:53 PM

Still can't play i clicked the application ad it says There should be 'Data' folder next to the executable

AlexFili 09-18-2009 02:12 AM

This is looking amazing so far, love the Scrab.
Let me know if you need any new dialogue :D

Nice. But I'm finding the controls a bit dodgy.

We tried keeping it as close to the original AO & AE controls, If you have any other suggestions we would really like it to share with us.

Controls for the Scrab Animation Demo:
Moving - Arrow keys - (AO & AE) Depending on feedback may also be changed as a Mouse-based free-cam
Running - Shift (AO & AE)
Die - 0 (Just for showing off the animation)
Howl - 1 (AO & AE Gamespeak)
Jump - Space (AO & AE)
Stomp - Z (AO & AE Attack)

The data folder should also be next to the .exe in the .rar and .zip, Are you sure you are extracting/ moving this data folder along with the .exe?

abe619 09-18-2009 03:43 AM

The Scrab demo doesn't work , i use winxp sp3.
it gives me this error: mono: initialization failed

In AE if you posess Scrab, you can stomp and/or attack by pressing CTRL :) Z didn't work when posessing Scrab (As far I know)

Jordan 09-18-2009 04:07 AM

That Scrab looks much better. :D The animations are looking good too.

STM 09-18-2009 04:16 AM

well im using WINZip and it fials, maybe ill wait for you to make a self installing demo =)

Oddey 09-18-2009 04:59 AM

I used winzip and it works.

On the actual model, everything is pretty good, aside from one complaint about the texture. Could you make the scrab a little reder on the reddish side, and slighty greener on the underside? That is all I have to say in the no so good area.
