Well

I'd have to say Brazil.. Terry Gilliam's Brazil...
Because it's social commentry....
and it's smart, just like Oddworld..

I agree with the similarities mentioned about The Dark Crystal and Star Wars

But people, you neglected to mention
E.T., and other such sci fi 80's classics like Labyrinth and the Navigator... I'm sure Lorne & friends, Farzad etc... all have drawn influence from their childhood favez...

I agree with Tremors too.. I've noticed that similarity before..
Mainly in the rear haunches of the beasts, they resemble the Slog almost identically...
Aliens has the same sort of appeal...
Anyone who likes Aliens and Oddworld, it's clear they have a fascination with nature, the social structure and nature of creatures...
So, most animal documentaries remind me of Oddworld too..

I think that'd be just awesome.. an entire documentary on fantasy animals done in CGI... Sorta like those Discovery channel "walking with dinosaures"
"walking with early mammals"
"walking on oddworld"
or some other, fantastical world...
The feeding\mating habits of Scrabs..
Fleeches and Slurgs have the coolest relationship..

Anyways, those are my two cents

Vykker Sean 04-29-2002 02:30 AM

Wild wild west reminds me of oddworld. the big mechanical spider looks like a paramite. and the desert reminds me of the deserts in scrabania

sgrsnaes 04-29-2002 01:12 PM

Gollum in Lord of the Rings?

Brazil, YES!!!! its so like oddworld. It has the factory environment and the worker dreaming of escape. But it has the humour of oddworld as well.

Terry Gillingam's other film "12 monkeys" is a bit like this as well (the underground world bit).

From what I've seen so far, I think Gollum in the Lord of the Rings has been influenced by Abe. We'll see when he's in 'Two Towers'.

I don't know the name of the species (I'm not into Star Wars that much, I'm more of a (evil! evil!) trekki, but I did watch Episode 1 on TV), but they're pretty far in the beginning, and they have sith contact. I found they looked a lot like Mudokons. Ironic.

I still long for a movie with a scrab rip-off *evil grin* Providing an Oddworld movie doesn't come beforehand. And if it does: IT BETTER INCLUDE SCRABS! *pathetic grin*

I've looked at the trailer. And they log slog-like in movement and such, plus the basic bodyshape is slog-ish. Of course they aren't slogs, so you can always argue that they don't look like them. D'oh. :)

But that picture settles the idle pondering about a possible rip-off. Thanks for finding it!

OH! I didn't know Brazil was made by the same guy as 12 Monkeys,
but now it makes complete sense!
it's totally his style.. the wierd people who interview him in that room... with the blue screens everywhere..
it's totally Gilliam...

That's very cool...

The tremors 2 creature also reminds me of those extinct creatures.. it's like a half slog half MEECH...

Anyone else know any good movies that remind you of Oddworld?

sodd 05-10-2002 09:53 PM

Final Fantasy!

Tremors 2, Dark Crystal, Alien, for the aforementioned reasons.

The Star Wars movies..all those alien races..

Evolution- some of those creatures had face fingers..There was one creature that looked so much like a paramite, I backed up the tape for another look..

The Time Machine- the windmills and the Eloi village..And the morlock's underground habitat reminded me of Rupturefarms...

Disney's Atlantis- could be those huge caverns with ruins in them remind me of the paramite temple. Also the big masks worn by the Atlanteans made me think of Bigface.

I agree with Atlantis and Star Wars.Atlantis does give ya that feeling of Paramonia and they do look like Big Face.Star Wars I think is alot like Oddworl.Boss Nass the head Gungan reminds me of a Glukkon andfor some reason Jar Jar reminds me of Abe.Maybe cause hes a knuckle head, just a simpleton but plays a big part

sligster 06-20-2002 06:03 PM

Has any one seen trailors for the new movie: Eight Legged Freaks? The mutant spiders look like paramites, and the swamps look like Nectrum!

Mac the Janitor 06-20-2002 07:02 PM

Yes, I think I've seen that preview...but they just looked like regular ol' spiders to me. (except for the fact that they are huge) I dunno, I wasn't paying attention at the time...

sligster 06-24-2002 04:21 PM

Well, I did'nt say they looked exactly like Paramites.

Soylent Green (1973)

I recommend this movie to you.

The name of this movie is Soylent Green(1973) .
I saw this movie at the time of a schoolchild.
.....when most members of this great forum are not born yet,...:D

Probably I think that "AO" has received influence in the story line of this movie.

atusiya@'s father <= he is not young,......but is not old yet ! ;)

Whoo, every one go see Soylent Green! It may not have the insane, odd creatures like in Oddworld, but when you see it, you'll probably see a very grim connection between AO and it. Good choice, atusiya@.

sligster 06-25-2002 02:16 PM

That is definatly like AO!

I loved it!

The movie that really resembles Oddworld a lot has to be Alein 3. It takes place on a dump prison world. The prison ficility looks and resembles in many ways like Rupture Farms or Rupture Farms Stock Yards. This ficility on this world is like hundreds of miles of tunnels and structures. There are massive furnaces in the prison and it is runned by only a few inmates that have decided to take a life of being costodians or Janitors. The inside looks so much like Rupture Farms with all the pipeing and vents everywhere and a lot of it is all like coroded or rusted and old looking. The lighting is also Rupture Farms like too with it's dimness.:fuzblink:

atusiya@ 06-26-2002 12:05 PM

There are some common features.

Well.....
There are some common features.
This picture is a picture which H.R.Giger which designed Alein drew.

I believe the species name is Neimoidians they were the Viceroys of the trade federation but you right they do indeed resemble Muds. check out star wars episode 1 creatures site or watch the movie great resemblense kinda.

paramiteabe 06-26-2002 08:29 PM

Geonosis in Star Wars Episode 2 looks like Oddworld. Especially the droid Factory with all the barrels moving on the huge racks.
