Hyneanas are NOT scavengers. They are pack hunters, much like Wolves. It is generally thought that Hyeanas pick the carcasses of animals that Lions have killed once the Lions have finished, but in fact it is often the Hyeanas that do the killing, then the Lions arrive and scare them off so that they can eat the animal. If we consider Meeches as Hyeanas and Scrabs as Lions, that might give us some idea of how it worked...

1 Every animal is a scavenger unless they eat plants.

2 It's free food why not.

3 Thats not actually the truth.

4 It's easy food why not get it and who's gonna stop 'em YOU :D . And if they can why not if they don't have to work for it.

If an animal sees some dead prey and an alive one which one would it choose it's obvious the dead one less work for them.

Are you saying that lions/lionesses don't hunt they are superb hunters all cats are even my cat who's only got one fang so don't mock them if you are saying that..

1. "Scavenger" does not mean the same as "Carnivore". Scavengers do not hunt for themselves, they just eat carrion. Hyeanas are not Scavengers, they are Predators.

2. Because it is rotten and smelly? Besides, the bits that the Lion leaves behind will be pretty manky: Gristle, Bones, Skin...

3. Yes it is. Just because it isn't well known, doesn't mean it isn't the truth. If you claim to know more about Zoology than me, I accept your challenge...

4. My point is that Lions are the scavengers, not Hyeanas.

5. Generally, predators will choose the live prey because the meat is fresher and tastier and the nice bits haven't already been eaten by anything else.

6. Cats are my favourite type of animal. Most of them are superb hunters. Tigers are. Leopards are. Even house cats are. It's just that Lions are total bullies, who wait for someone else to bring down something, then scare them off and eat it themselves. This is no reflection of other cats, just Lions [the gits].

1 I have news for you scavengers do hunt for them selves they can't just wait for someone else to hunt for them they only scavenge because it's easy and is less work for them as I said before everything is a scavenger it would rather get it off someone else then hunt for it it self less work.

2 Hyeanas will eat anything. they don't care if it smells with their sharp teeth they eat bones like that.

3 I don't claim I just like cats. I don't like every animal so I don't learn about them and I don't really care about zoology.

4 As I have said everything is a scavenger and every animal scavengers at one time or another.

5 They just want to eat to survive they don't care if it tastier but don't you say that lionesses are scavengers.

6 Mine too my favorite. All of them are superb hunters and I mean ALL of them. Of course lions hardly hunt its the females that do the hunting but if your as big as a male lion is it can take on anything. Yeah I like lions being total bullies especially towards hyeanas :D As I have said the males hardly hunt it's the females the queen of beasts that do the hunting and I give them that title.

I don't dispute that you know a lot about Cats, but you clearly know very little about Hyeanas. They are fearsome predators, not scavengers. They simply have a bad reputation as scavengers. I'm not sure why...

An interesting fact: It was recently discovered that male Lions do in fact hunt. Not as much as Lionesses, and in a different way, but they do hunt. Whereas Lionesses will hunt things like Antelopes and Gazelles, using stealth and tactics, male Lions hunt alone, taking on big things, like Bull Buffaloes, that Lionesses would be unable to bring down.

1 I know that but they are also scavevgers every animal is sheesh how many times have I said that.

2 Oh man you go too far with comedy your making me laugh that was not recently discoverd and I didn't say that they didn't hunt I just said that they hardly did.

3 Actually Lionesses can bring down Bull Buffaloes haven't you seen a tv show of Lions Because I have and it showed lionesses bringing down Bull Buffaloes.

Hey you guys I saw a National Geographic show once before and it was about Hyenas. I don't know about you but they said they were scavengers. They come after the lions or leapords get there fill. They eat the scraps. I have never herd of a hyena chaseing a herd to hunt down. Yes they are still dangerous preditaors and they can still get a kill but they are still scavengers. National Geographic even says so. So I think the meech is still going to be a scavenger and not like a lion or tigar or what ever other african big cat may be out there ok!

Shrykullmaster 01-05-2002 11:54 PM

how do we no the meech even eat meat? for all we no, they could eat plants

Danny 01-06-2002 12:25 AM

Speak for yourself, Abe22, but I for one do not go about eating animals that other animals have killed...

And yes, the fact that male Lions are actually fairly good hunters IS fairly recent news [recent as in a couple of years].

paramiteabe: That was probably an old National Geographic. The discovery that it is Lions who eat what Hyeanas have killed and not the other way round was only made about 5 or so years ago...

abe22 01-06-2002 01:06 AM

I didn't mean humans Rettick.

And yes they are good hunters but they let the females do the work and it is not recent news they have been doing it for ages.
