Persepolis is a great film. It taught me a lot about Iranian history.

It really is, and if you look beyond Marjane's understandable political bias you'll find some really moving themes, and the animation is incredible. This movie destroys Ratitouille, it should've won that award that it was nominated for, whatever it was.

Mac Sirloin 11-23-2009 12:07 PM

Totally not defending Twilight OR Stephanie Myer over here, but while I can't vouch for the books, I can say that the first movie isn't bad. It's not great, nor is it particularly good, but it's adequate. I've seen it in bits and parts on the HBO movie channels. A friend of mine read the books more or less to justify an opinion on them and he says that they are bad, but not abominable. People who needlessly rage over Twilight need to go back a few steps and make sure they aren't just copying what some 14 year old on /b/ would say.

On that note, however, werewolves going back and forth and Vampires not 'Sploding in the daylight seems like lazy writing.

New Moon? You watched it? You repulsive little demon. -rep for you (haha, just kidding. I wouldn't do that). I hate the Twilight "Saga" and all its stupid Fanpires, too. It makes me want to be sick and shove a big stake in Robert Fattinson's ugly mug.

Pattinson thinks Twilight is stupid.

Leto 11-23-2009 12:12 PM

i do feel the need to thwart the internet/smrat people response to twilight, what with a lot of people going "BAWWW IT'S SUCH A BADLY WRITTEN PIECE OF SHIT I'M TO SMRAT FOR THIS". they seem to be overlooking the fact it's aimed primarily at young girls. they're not going to read anything above the level of

so

yeah

Mac Sirloin 11-23-2009 12:24 PM

Exactly. I worked with a dude last year who had read them and wouldn't shut up about them. When I said I didn't want to read them he was like "OH WELL YOU'RE JUST NEEDLESSLY BEING A DOWNER" or something

No

I didn't want to read them because I don't care.

brb reading John Dies at The End for the ninth time

Wings of Fire 11-23-2009 12:38 PM

The 'Aimed at young girls' thing is justified til you get to the third book.

Then shit starts hitting the fan, lots and lots of shit.

Alf Shall Rise 11-23-2009 12:44 PM

Last movie I watched was Paranormal Activity. It was over hyped, though I still enjoyed it for the most part. I prefer suspense over most other horror sub genres, and Paranormal Activity had a lot of suspense built up throughout it.

Did you read the books?

Wings of Fire 11-23-2009 01:03 PM

I've read quite a lot of the first one, and an unbiased detailed synopsis of the other three.

She goes way out of her league after New Moon.

What happens? Does she date Freankenstein Monster next? Or a troll? :p

It's my theory that Twilight started out as a fanfic of Underworld

Basically this.

The whole "written for a younger audience" defense sort of peters out when you realize Harry Potter was written for the same age group and still has ten times the substance Twilight does.

It's like a case of The Missing Piece or The Giving Tree versus David Likes Rain. The former two teach complex life lessons dealing with avorice, humility, and companionship wrapped neatly in a juicy metaphor. David Likes Rain is about David and the rain, and how he likes it.

Wings of Fire 11-23-2009 02:24 PM

I'd like it on record that I thought the Harry Potter series got weaker and weaker after the third book. Also Harry's development as a character stopped and in some places regressed.

Sekto Springs 11-23-2009 02:26 PM

Harry Potter's character could have regressed all the way back up JK Rowling's butthole and her books would still would have had more substance than Twilight.

And in all fairness Harry Potter had three more books than Twilight. Your character's are bound to suffer a little when you're writing purely with the intent of extending a franchise as long as possible for moneys. Harry Potter had the room to regress, whereas if Twilight regressed any further, it would become Scary Godmother.

Edge Chronicles is the childrens series I've read most deserving of a movie.

OddjobAbe 11-23-2009 02:37 PM

Sooty and Sweep Show needs a film.

Leto 11-23-2009 02:41 PM

Things don't need substance to be superly popular, got nothing to do with it. high school musical. things don't have to strictly be good to be immensely popular.

You're right. They just should be. :3

Strike Witch 11-23-2009 07:35 PM

Twilight's third book involves the main characters Uterus getting chewed open by her boyfriend or something, and implied pedophilia.

Also all three books should be burnt for promoting shallow relationships and stalking as good things.

used:) 11-23-2009 07:59 PM

I've said it once and I'll say it again: they're the surrogate Harry Potter for aging fangirls.

Leto 11-23-2009 08:27 PM

As Glee is to High School Musical?

There's four books though.

Eh, who gives a shit.

Sekto Springs 11-23-2009 09:02 PM

I was just wondering whether you made a mistake or were intentionally omitting one book for being decent.

I saw Inglorious Basterds the other night.

Loved it.

Wings of Fire 11-24-2009 08:49 AM

Just finished the original Mobile Suit Gundam. My God that dub was awkward.

Though I loved Char's VA, and the random Lt Scott McNeil played early in :3.

This, this, till the end of time this. I can see it now, sweeping across our viewpoint from space in full CG. They're going to make the Percy Jackson books into films. I read the first one, and it is basically a clone of Harry Potter with Greek gods.

I decided I'd do it in chronological order, seeing as I couldn't find MS IGLOO I'm on episode three of Romeo and Juliet in 'nam with Huge Mecha.
