Goddamnit computer

Posted 09-14-2011 at 04:17 PM by Dynamithix
My computer is probably going to break soon. It keeps making very loud noises whenever I have multiple tabs open or when I start up a game or Steam for example.

I mean, I can't even watch Youtube videos on 480p or more without it going "VRRROOOOOOM" almost all the time.

It's from 2007 and it's almost worse than my dad's computer and that computer is bad.

How much would it cost to build/buy a good computer that would run modern day games? I gotta start saving money after I pre-order Skyrim.

I can't even run Minecraft without experiencing major lag every 10 seconds. ;_;

(Surprisingly though, it seems to run Dead Space and L4D 2 really well.)

If the hardware's the problem, you can fix/replace that for relatively cheap. If its your software, update it. No need to buy a whole new rig if you know what you're doing.

My hardware is pretty old (at least 3-4 years), but I've cut it with alot of modern parts. My graphics card was the absolute best you could get a couple years ago, now it's hardly the best, but it does the job.

I think it has something to do with overheating because of the loud noises it makes. Like everything I do seems to eat up a lot of RAM. (I think.)

Gah, I'm such a noob with these things.

Here are some of my specs:

OS - Vista Home Premium
Graphics card - ATI Radeon HD 3400 (Which limits my gaming a lot.)
Processor - AMD Athlon 64 x2 Dual Core Processor 5000+, ~2.6GHz
2 Gigs of RAM

Something like that. I remember when the first graphics card that was built in in the computer corrupted, the place that fixed our comp. changed it to the current one, which is a lot worse IMO.

It's a lot cheaper to build the PC yourself if you know how to do it, and also try and shop around for parts to get a good deal. Consider what you want from your new PC (particularly if you aren't too anal about high performance just want it to run stuff well enough to play decently) and chose your parts carefully - You may be able to find cheaper parts that have a similar performance to more expensive parts. It's possible to have a semi-decent gaming rig without spending a fortune.

5 months ago I upgraded from my 7 year old rig and bought these for under £500 combined:
AMD Phenom XII 3.2 GHz 6 core CPU
MSI 870-C45 motherboard
4 GB Corsair DDR3 RAM
Samsung Spinpoint 1 TB hard drive
Samsung DVD RW
650W Seventeam power supply
Asgard gaming case
Windows 7 professional

I'm borrowing an (old) graphics card from my friend and have used as many parts as possible from my old PC (Monitor, keyboard, mouse, etc), but it's a decent PC which runs modern games quite well considering I didn't pay that much for it (although I will have to upgrade it later with more RAM, a new graphics card + monitor, probably another £200/£300). Whooyay, gaming on a budget.

Other than that, check your running temperatures in your existing rig - It may be full of dust or you may need to replace the thermal paste on your CPU heatsink.

Before you spend a lot of money buying a new computer, try replacing the fan. It might just be malfunctioning, causing the loud noise and thus not cooling well enough.

Also, follow DarkHoodness' advice and clean out all the dust inside. Replacing the thermal paste is also a good idea, but that might be a bit difficult if you don't have experience with that sort of thing.

Sounds like a videocard problem if it's just doing it with Youtube and games.

Try cleaning the fans inside, check if no cables are getting in the way or something and try to identify exactly which part of your computer is acting up. Try replacing it before you go and buy expensive replacement parts. So if your videocard is acting up, there is no reason to replace your entire computer.

That and don't buy into the 12GB of RAM and SSD's because you can seriously do without them. If you can afford it, cool, but those two things would be the very first thing to save money on if money is an issue.

Don't complain, Dynamithix. My computer is from about 2001.

I do get a Macbook through my school, though.

Havoc, I cleaned the fans in summer and that didn't really effect anything. (Even though there was a lot of dust there.)

Phylum, I know I know, I'm just getting pretty annoyed with the extremely loud sounds especially if I'm trying to use the computer at night...

I would really think about building a PC i mean if you know what your doing (unsure if you do) it can be the greatest thing you've ever done but you can easliy balls it up.
If i was you, I would just look at complete computer packages before building

My own PC pretty much crapped out about a week ago. Had to get a new one, because the old one was not repairable, or at least, the amount of money needed was about the same as buying a new one.
