Sekto motivated me

I was really reluctant to listen to it. I did though, and I found out about two things. Firstly, the instrument choice is (might not want to heed this, as I have no idea what kind of instruments should be used for whatever kind of music this is) just plain terrible. The second thing is that it is definitely repetitive, which might be what you're going for, but a little more variation wouldn't kill it I think.

It's quite simplistic as well, but I'm pretty sure it isn't meant to be a complex piece overall.

Now, I know naught of whatever this genre is, but I don't really care for it, so you can disregard all of this as bias. I will grant you though, that this is a lot better than the first music I tried to compose.

It's dubstep, which is inherently terrible and what most kids are into these days. I'd say that, as far as dubstep goes, this is actually pretty decent. Again though, it's dubstep...

I listened to about 5 seconds. Once I realised what it was I stopped.

I've been arranging Christmas Carols of piccoli all week and my ears just couldn't handle electronic instruments.

Thanks guys, the three main bass sounds (like the YoY ect.) aren't actually instruments, I made them from scratch with operator and other tools, and to be honest I don't know what I was thinking with the strings at the end.

Well, I don't usually listen to dubstep, mostly because in my it's one of these worst music genres, the only dubstep artist close enough to say that I like it is xKore (He's still far from that), and it doesn't sound like xKore to me. At the beginning I thought that the tune at least is catchy, but I changed my mind through the song - I think it's too complicated to be catchy. Also, 'Instruments' sounding like "lolololololololol" kinda keeps me from judging this as a not-joke song.

It's YOY, you can hear it in some SubVibe songs, I spent a stupid amount of time trying to make that sound, it's one of my favourites. Besides WUB.

Also, I wish these fucking spambots would give it a rest. I've heard "Sick tune man! If you need free samples visit (whatever name)" about 5 times.

I'm guessing those are pony voices.

Keep at it, Nep. Regardless of what these fags say. Dubstep is ephemeral, but the music experience you get from trying to make it will last forever.

I remember back when I first started piddling around with music I was about 11. I used a bunch of pre-made loops that came standard with the first edition of Acid. It was all trash that I would never show anyone, but it taught me some invaluable things about music mixing.

Just make dubstep and don't show it to anyone.

Certainly not the people here, at any rate. I don't think anyone here likes Dubstep.

It pays to be reclusive when it comes to honing your talents. I would never show anyone the work I did before I got "good", and I'm constantly cycling out old work with my portfolios.

The one trick I can say that never fails is never be lazy with your work. Make a strenuous effort every time. I've thrown out entire songs because they didn't sound original enough, or weren't complex enough.

I think if you have the motivation to dive in and apply effort to something like this, to produce something, then you should leave that fucking cartoon at the door and really make it yours.
I don't despise dubstep; I listen to a few electronic bands that make fairly good use of wubbity wub sound libraries in their work. It's not the worst genre of music by a long shot and definitely more listenable than a lot of art-house indie trash that is stuffed down our throats as 'unique' music these days. But you're pretty much just poisoning your own output down the road by needing to cram in some pony related nonsense just to get the actual track created in the first place.
Again, good on you for having it in you to sit your ass down and make something you want to share, but keep it your own. Maybe we're not the intended audience for your work, but shit on a biscuit am I sick of ponies perforating every angle of media these days. Make a song about robots fighting, or how you feel when you drink too much coffee. Anything but some wubby fanfiction told vicariously through soundbytes.

I do like the beats, and the scores and the bippity bops (hey guys can you tell I'm not a musician it's not obvious is it) and the bits in between the...vocals would make a nifty ringtone or whatever. Just keep at it, and make use of your own understanding of the ebb and flow of those wubbies and wobbies and YOYOYOYOYOYOs, not that damnable cartoon.

Here's an example of some pseudo dubstep that I really like. I am not saying you should follow this example, but I like this band. See if you can glean something from it. Or not.

FYI I'd probably like your song if I had drugs, but I do not.

I listened to the whole thing whilst watching DJ Pony at the top of your blog. It suddenly made sense.

What software did you use to make this? And can it be used to make music as opposed to dubstep?

I didn't really like it, to the point I couldn't finish listening to it. Before you start anything like this you should learn how to play a real instrument like the piano or guitar, it'll give you a better understand of the theory behind music at the least. =)

I used Ableton Live 8, you can produce music other than dubstep, but it's mainly for electronic stuff.

While this is sound advice, I just want to point out that the theory/practice behind making music like this (which is essentially anti-music) is totally different from traditional music.

I also wanted to point out I have no proper music training, and I've been doing freelance composing for a few years now. Granted, I do have a full understanding of music theory, I just can't actually play any instruments. I took years of piano lessons as a child and I can barely play Ode to Joy. My motor skills just aren't up to snuff. However, you should definitely learn chords, key, tempo, and be able to compose by sound.

Sight-reading is overrated, unless you plan on actually being a performer, and performing work you didn't make yourself.

Yeah, I think learning an actual instrument would take more sanity and patience than I have. I'm going to at least try to learn chords and stuff.

Actually to make good music, it's better to lack sanity.

Invest an hour a day every day for five years into an instrument. It's worth doing, even if you're not going anywhere with it.

You'll be amazed at how different music sounds to you after that. It doesn't matter what instrument you learn, after five years you'll be at a point where you really have to hone in and listen to your sound.

I'd honestly recommend saxophone if you can find a good teacher and a second hand Yamaha horn lying around somewhere. It's really fun and getting a good sound is easier than other winds in my experience. I couldn't recommend flute to someone who says they're impatient because it's a pain in the arse. I'm at a point where my saxophone playing is catching up to my flute playing because tone exercises just feel easier and are more productive.

Also, piano has always been to finicky for me. It may seem easier than a blown instrument, but there is so much fine control in playing. I never realised until recently when I started really listening to my abysmal attempts at playing and hearing every note that I played wrongly. By wrongly I mean that I pressed the key a bit too hard for it to fit into the musical phrase.

It's worth learning an instrument. It's rewarding and it can be an hour a day you can just get away from everything else and do something fun. I can't recommend it enough, if it can be a bit trying sometimes - there are no hobbies that aren't.

I made a short techno song years ago. I thought bandpass was the best thing in the world back then.
