Right Eye Jenny

A few days ago I had a letter to say that I was due for an eye appointment, it was good timing too, because lately I've found my left eye to be constantly blurry, I can see fine because my right eye is good, but it is aggravating.

So today, went and had my test, turns out that apparently my left eye is "stuck" in a focus state if you know what I mean. Apparently it is a very common problem amongst students these days...

Apparently reading on computer screens is the common cause (And I enjoy a lot of reading on the internet)

When reading the letters on the screen with my right eye everything was really clear. The optician said that it was very healthy and very strong. but trying to read again with just my left eye was near impossible, I already knew I had problems with my left eye, but really struggling to read a line of big letters really made me realise just how bad the problem was.

So I've got to wear reading glasses now.

I've never had to wearing glasses in my life to aid my vision, so I will look strange, I'll post some pics in WDYLL when they arrive.

So why does reading computer screens affect your left eye but not your right?

I have this blurring thing every once in a while, mostly after being behind the computer for too long and mostly just my right eye. It's like there's water in your eye, but rubbing it won't fix it. Really weird. Never been a prolonged problem for me though, then again I already wear glasses since I was 3.

Maybe it's because I'm right handed?

Handedness doesn't have a very strong correlation with eyeness.

Just saying.

You probably already had a right-eye preference to begin with, and this merely exacerbated it.

I was born with an astigmatism in my left eye, so my right eye took over. It was very strong, but the left got even worse as it became a lazy eye. By the time it was caught out when I was four(ish), 90% of my vision was in my right eye and only 10% was from the left.

A year and a half of eye-patches later - which should actually have gone longer, but I had a tantrum and refused to wear them any longer - my vision in the left eye has improved, but it's still far from perfect because of the astigmatism. Basically, if I lost my right eye and had to depend on the left one, I would be legally blind.

I'm short-sighted, so I don't need my glasses o focus on things up close, though the maximum distance has been steadily retreating. But if I read or use a computer for even half an hour without my glasses (usually in the morning if I'm doing so before I put on my glasses), when I finally come to put them on my vision, while clear, becomes double. I find it impossible to get both eyes to look at the same spot further than a foot from my face. One time at university this went on all day, and the day after. It was a nightmare.

Never again. Never ever ever.

I'm long-sighted. So far I just have to hold books far away from my face, but I'll probably need glasses eventually. I tried wearing reading glasses once. It wasn't really worth it, but I looked right.

Alternatively, if you lost your left eye, you would look badass and lose practically nothing.

Someone get me a spoon.

Bear in mind that I have already experienced wearing an eyepatch for a year and a half of my life and hated it. The most underwhelming thing was that my mum had pitched it to me by saying "You have to wear an eyepatch! Just like a pirate!", but the patches turned out to be itchy, stick-on, not-quite-skin-tone things similar to bandaids.
