I had a girl do this to me as well, though her initial excuse was even more feeble than the one your ex gave you. My advice would be to expect her to do the same to your friend; she's no cause to be any more committed and honest to him than she was to you.

My opinion on dating now is that it's just not worth wasting your time and emotion over unless you see the relationship actually becoming serious, even leading into marriage. If you start a relationship just for fun, why does either partner have any reason to treat it as anything other than that? If either of you get bored it'll break up, leading to the same pain and unhappiness you're going through now. A relationship needs commitment and dedication at the best of times, so if you've no motivation to hold it together, it'll fall apart.

I know a woman who dated around and accidentally got pregnant. The guy did the decent thing and they married, but their relationship has no real strength or dedication. Their son is nearly nine now and she's not very happy in the relationship, but for the sake of her child and her beliefs, she doesn't want to break up. The result is she's not very happy, and the risk from dating freely is that you could be stuck in that place, potentially for your whole life. Or in a place like OANST, in a legal battle for the right to see his kid... or whatever.

My advice, which isn't the same as the advice of society as a whole, is to stick only to relationships that you could see becoming serious and long-term. You're less likely to get let down by the other person, and less likely to get your life in a mess.

On the other hand, if all you want is a casual relationship, as long as it's mutual there's little harm in starting one. Who knows, it could lead to bigger things...
