Bloody Hell.

I watched "Saving Private Ryan" again, and thoroughly enjoyed it, although the all of the other scenes paled in comparison with the Omaha Beach scene. Still shakes me up, it looks exactly like you'd imagine the real thing would. That beach scene left quite an impression on me. Very gruesome film, but it is done in much better taste than films like that shitty Saw film.

In other news, I've found myself listening to more ska than usual. I usually listen to jazz or weird stuff, but those chords on the offbeats are really doing something for me at the moment. Don't care much for the 3rd wave stuff. Madness used to be quite interesting, but the gems are the 1st wave pieces (I can listen to most of Prince Buster's stuff over and over).

its Omaha! and its a brilliant film. apparently the war vets from that very beach said it was the most realistic representation they had ever seen or heard. like i have said many times; i have utmost respect for them.

and my stance on the Saw collection is, if you have to put that much gore and violence into a film about something that resembles a snuff movie, you may as well just watch a snuff movie. i also strongly believe this about Hostel. no joy in watching something like that. it doesn't have to make you look away or turn your stomach for someone to decide whether they enjoyed it or not.

don't listen to much Ska, only ones i stick to are The Specials, Madness and some Bad Manners (though some of their songs i find to be very grating).

Thanks for the correction - that was honestly a typo. I promise you.

I agree entirely. Both series were sick, twisted and perverse. I don't have a good word to say about them.

On ska, if you like The Specials, you may recognise one of the riffs in this:

Saw is hardly snuff. Snuff is boring. Saw, to use a phrase coined by our man Leto, is gore-porn.

Saw, truthfully, should have been ended after the first film, or at a stretch - the third. Killing with a concept is interesting, but after a while it became all about the means of execution and not the reason why said person was executed.

i recognise it but cant put a fucking name to the song the riff was used in.

EDIT: ah, just checked and it seems it was his own, but still sounds remarkably similar to one of The Specials songs, like you said.

I love Saving Private Ryan. I think it's a better example of Spielbergs Recent Work (I think his prime for making popcorn crunching blockbusters has long expired and he should not make the next Indy)

Tom Hanks is my favourite actor, add to that the awesomeness of Ted Danson. Anything Ted Danson is in is inherently brilliant.

Tom Hanks is a bloody good actor. i didn't notice Vin Diesel in SPR (surprisingly) first time around, and was surprised to see Paul Giamatti show his face.

I disliked the way Saving Private Ryan Americanized the Second World War, other than that it was awesome.

i agree. watched it with my grandfather the very first time on video back in 1998 and he said exactly the same thing. especially shows near the end when the Tank Buster's are flying over. can't remember exactly what is said, though.

Vin Diesel's in Saving Private Ryan?

I really need to get round to watching it. I borrowed the VHS from my cousin about 5 months ago and keep forgetting to watch it. It's in a corner on the video stand right behind the door.

i was just as surprised seeing as i didn't even notice him after watching the whole thing through, until i watched it again.

you have to look pretty closely, as he doesn't particularly play a massive role. but a significant one.

It's just a bit jarring that the biggest allusion to Britain in the war was one character saying that one of our generals was kind of a dick.

Everyone's in Saving Private Ryan. I remember being thrilled about four years ago when I realised the soldier who picks up on the brothers all dying is Hal in Malcolm in the Middle.

We watched the beach scene of Private Ryan in a Social Education lesson when i was like 16, and I nearly fainted. I'm such a wuss when it comes to gore; I think I empathise with the characters or something. It makes me very squeamish, but at least it gives me a good reason not to enjoy gore. I wouldn't sit in a room next to a room where they were watching a film like 'Saw'. It's a shame, 'cus I usually enjoy war films and I'm sure I'd enjoy SPR if it didn't make me feel ill. (Hey, I got the rest of the day off school, so no worries! )

Five Iron Frenzy = rocking ska band (they're Christians, but their songs are more social than religious, in the non-boring way).

You know, I wouldn't care so much if their songs were religious. As long as it sounds enjoyable, I'm all for it.

It was always a similar thing with me, but I always researched how the effects may have been acheived, so that the second time after watching a film, I saw it as it was done, and not how it looked. Nowadays, I couldn't give a shit. This is possibly down to the way I succeeded in building immunity to "squeemishness".

I liked the film but they make out that Britain played no part in it tbh. Ah well I have a great respect for any vet though!
