Best way to re-set a sleeping pattern?

Posted 04-24-2011 at 10:28 AM by DarkHoodness
I'm sure at least one of you has had this problem.

For the past 3-4 days I've been trying to sleep at a reasonable time of night, but I'm not tired so just end up lying there and getting bored. Then I get up and do stuff intending to stay awake the entire day so I can sleep at a reasonable time the next day (which worked for me in the past) - But then I get too tired to function and go to bed at about 8-10am intending to nap for a couple of hours.

Even though my alarm clock is right next to my head, I end up sleeping through the fucking thing despite it going off constantly for hours. I finally wake up in the evening, then repeat the cycle. Trying to stay awake the entire day obviously isn't working.

Frankly it's got me fucked right off, because I end up losing the day, and can't seem to break this annoying pattern since I seem to be immune to alarm clocks now. I don't even turn it off in my sleep - It just fails to wake me up. Being able to sleep through anything has its drawbacks. Maybe I should see a doctor?

Apparently I heard that you ought to starve yourself for a day and then eat when you want to begin your new day, and I tried doing that, but that requires being awake after getting some sleep the previous night at the time you want to begin your day. Anyone know of other ways of resetting a pattern?

I have this problem. Here's what you do.

First, stay up all night. Do not sleep until 1-3pm.

You'll wake up around 12-4am. Now, when you next sleep, you should be able to feel the strain around 6pm or so. When you sleep, you'll wake up around 6-8am now.

I do this after all night binges.

Find some opium poppies.... They randomly row in nature as far as I know(plenty of those in denmark). Then take the cap(the little bubble with all the poppies inside) and boil it and make tea out of it. You'll sleep.

In Romania they use it a lot as a sleepy herb.

You can also use Lavender.

Also Valerian works very well for me. It doesnt make me unable to stay awake but about 30 minutes after drinking, I can feel that sort of relaxing tiredness swell over me that make me able to close my thoughts and get sleepy. It's a medical plant too and is used for sedative drugs.

Evidently I'm an outlier.

instead of going to bed at 8am-10am, try going at 6am-8am. Rinse and repeat.

Also, try getting a new clock with a very different alarm sound. Or get a friend/relative/nemesis to phone you at a certain time of day.

Stay up a full 24 hours, cut yourself off from any chemical wakefulness helper at the 18 hour mark, then just go to bed whenever you want.

Thank you all for the advice. I'ma try Dixanadu's method first, and if I remember correctly I think I even did something like this once a long time ago. Then failing that, I'll try more drastic measures with substances.

It's a question of persuading myself to stay awake that long. Shame I seem to be immune to caffeine too. Heh.

@Scraptrapman - I'm one of those people where that makes me feel more awake rather than asleep.

@Splat - The problem is not being able to sleep when I want. I can go to bed at those times like I did "last night" (heh), but then I just end up lying there awake with my eyes closed trying and failing to sleep due to not being tired enough.

As for waking up, I think part of the problem is finding an alarm clock which stays on constantly until I get up to turn it off. Most alarm clocks turn off after 5 minutes, which is useless to me. Why is that anyway? To prevent them being a nuisance to neighbours?

Pulling off all nighters is really stressful to your body though. I think using herbs or medicine is the best bet.

Medical help doesn't help me much whenever I need to change my schedule.

Usually, it either doesn't work, or it just completely fucks things up. I once took half a dose of nyquil to sleep, and it knocked me out for a full 16 hours.

My advice is to do what other people said and stay up all day.

Yea but Nyquill is kinda stupid. Pills like that in generl is something I avoid whenever I can. Herbs dont put you out cold.. You can still stay awake when you take them, but if you choose to go to bed, they will seriously help you ease into sleepiness and fall asleep easier. It's not a miracle thing, just a nice harmless thing to try.

I find constant alarm clocks easy to ignore. You're better off getting one that goes for a few minutes, sleeps for a few and then goes off again.

I feel your pain. I get tired, go to bed, but I just don't feel sleepy. I just lie awake for hours, staring at the cracks in my ceiling. The best advice I can give is:

If it's really important to get to sleep, do something dull and mentally taxing - long division, algebra, a trashy novel, just something that makes your eyes droop and your head hurt. Don't do physical excercise. It kickstarts your body into 'excercise' mode, and you'l end up with blood rushing around your muscles and your brain flaring - the opposite of what you want.

A big issue for me is boredom. When I'm lying in bed awake, I get bored. When I get bored, I start thinking about something interesting. When I start thinking, I can't get to sleep. What you want is something that can occupy you without you having to a) get up or b) pay any attention when you start feeling a bit sleepier. I recommend some light music. Just put it on at a low volume, listen to it, and when you get sick of it pull the covers over your head. It should be quiet enough that you can only just hear it then. I set My Shiny New Birthday Hi-Fi to play 'Boy Meats Girl[' and 'Meat Spin' on repeat the last night.

If you really can't sleep, try and use the time to do something useful. Or something nice, like looking at the stars.

Failing that, pills.
