Games! Prizes! Irony!

So I took Abbey to the fair the other day, and at one of the carney booths they had a gigantic Tom and a gigantic Jerry. Abbey loves Tom and Jerry, so I decided to try my hand at the game. It's the one where they have four bottles stacked on each other, and you have to knock them all down with a ball. However, the bottles weigh about 15 pounds apiece, and the ball is extremely light.

So I'm trying, and trying, and trying, and I just can't fucking do it. At one point I got three down, but three down just doesn't fucking cut it, now does it? So I wait until there are no customers around, and I say to the carnie, "What do I need to do to win Tom," while pointing at what I want. He gives me his big, shit-eating carnie grin and says, "All you have to do is knock down these." "No, no, no," I say. "What do I have to do to win Tom." He promptly stops smiling and says "Thirty bucks." I agree and hand him the money.

He now gives me another ball and tells me to try again, and he will pretend that I won. I take the ball, wind up, and let it fly. One, two, three, four bottles fall down. I just stand there staring at them with mouth open while the carnie laughs his ass off.

	I'm trying to visualize the pattern the bottles must have been in so you'd at least have a tiny chance to knock them all down at once. It escapes me. Congratulations, however, in losing $30+ in this economic recession.

	On the other hand, you did manage to please your daughter. In a few years time when she's surfin' the net, she'll see this and realise that you're willing to spend $30 and make a fool of yourself for the sake of her happiness. ++1 parenting skillz --1 pride

	That's a bit of a strange question. No, it didn't "accomplish" anything, but had I not been able to legitimately win I would have still received the prize. Either way, I got to look like a cool motherfucker to my kid. It's worth it.

Ah... games on the fair. Same over here. The bottles weigh a ton and the balls are just about ready to float away.

Luckily there's one stand here that is still honest, which is the shooting game. After all the other fairs in the country I've been too I'm starting to think the shooting game that comes here every year is the only one that doesn't have a false calibrated sight and where you actually get all the bullets you pay for.

I was at this other shooting place once where you had to shoot 10 cans of a board with 10 bullets. Being the expert marksman that I am I manage to shoot 9 of them and miss the 10th somehow. This went on for 3 more tries, constantly missing the last one. Should come as no surprise that I simply didn't get a 10th bullet to begin with, hence it was impossible to ever win anything. Bastards.

	I don’t understand your strife. You paid the carny, but he wanted to make it look like you’d legitimately won, so he pulled whatever lever it is that decreases the difficulty level and you won. You got exactly what you paid for.

	There is no lever. They are bottles on a shelf. I had almost gotten it a few times earlier. There is no strife. I wasn't upset. I just thought it was funny.

	It's possible. It didn't feel heavier, but that doesn't necessarily mean that it wasn't. His reaction to me knocking them down kind of leads me to believe that he was as surprised as I was.
