Big Blog Fridays #4 - A Mud's Life

Posted 02-17-2017 at 08:16 AM by TheManFromMudos
Hi guys, it's TheManFromMudos, here again with another installment of 'Big Blog Fridays'. Thanks for all the feedback on last weeks' blog. I'm always happy to here your thoughts on each topic. This week, though, I thought we should talk about Mudokons. As you all know, the Mudokons are an opressed people in Mudos, stepped on by their former Glukkon pals and their new industrialist lackies. Fortunately, though, some Muds are lucky enough to hold on to their freedom, living far away from the noise and commerce of Mudos' larger population centres.

But it's not all fun for a native Mudokon, oh no. Just because you're not enslaved, doesn't mean you don't have to work. And Mudokon natives certainly have their work cut out. I mean, just look at all those complex structures they've built with their bare hands (and what few primitive tools they have access to). Then there's that whole business about keeping nature in balance, and of course, meditation. Lots of meditation. Even so, those tribesfolk are living in luxury compared to the likes of those poor Scrubs at Soulstorm Brewery. And just imagine, when you finally do have some time on your hands, a quick break from meditating, a little rest from saving what little remains of Oddworld's environment, all the things you could get up to...

So, my question for you all today is this: If you were a native Mudokon, roaming free in the wilderness of Mudos, what would do with your free time? Take long walks through the hot Scrabanian sands? Climb trees in the Monsaic lines? Or perhaps you'd head out to Paramonia to play 'Fetch the Hunk of Meat' with those adorable little scamps? Just remember: One can be fun. But two? You'd better run!

If I were a native Mudokon I have to wonder if I would ever venture anywhere – half of Oddworld has murderous intent toward me and the other half wants to enslave me.

Paramonia does seem to have the most agreeable climate in Mudos, though, so maybe that’d be a nice spot to have a tree fort.

Probably I'd go to Paramonia or Monsaic Lines.

I'd set up an egghut in Paramonia. Paramites are....a little friendlier and parhaps i can use their webs to spin clothes and rope. I'd probably choose the easiest native job i can think of which is meep herding. Oh wait I'll be surrounded by paramites and meep is meat so....I need to think about this one

By the way, the Mudokons we've seen are gender-neutral (like Manco).

^Sounds less inconvient and uncomplicated. We haven't seen male muds and who the hell would want to be a 5 ton, egg poppin' queen? no thanks.

TheManFromMudos, you're very good at generating discussion. Would you like to host the next edition of Odd Piece of the Week?

As for what I'd do as a Mud: I'd probably erect a Spooce Drink stand and start generating a profit. If you can't beat em, join em!

kjjcarpenter, while I'd love to do Odd Piece of the Week, I don't know if I'd be able to come up with enough content for a big discussion. Perhaps I could do it in a couple of weeks' time, that way I can prepare something for people to really sink their teeth into.

Of course! Think on it, and if you need any inspiration, browse TOGG. There's plenty there that might catch your eye. Just let us now on the OWF Rebirth thread, or send me a message.

By the way, what would YOU do as a native mud?

I'd probably go to some cave in Paramonia. I'm a natural lurker after all - I used to fucking breed tarantulas too. I'm very much comfortable around spiders and spider-like creatures, which would make the paramites my spirit animals.

I would be a lone shaman, a hermit, hiding in some cave, and my only friends would be the paramites. My constant companions, my guardians, my minions....

I would probably farm them for their silk as Gunnr suggested. I could sell it to the other villages in exchange for some Meep meat to feed my family. My family of paramites.

Out of all the places we've seen so far, I'd pick the mountainous regions Munch's Oddysee took place in.

For one, the're relatively secluded. Yes, the game made it seem like the mountains were crawling with Sligs, but the levels seem to all be in valleys or atop plateaus, rare areas of flat terrain (the only terrain suitable for Industrialist facilities, anyway). I doubt they'd be able to make much headway into the more rugged areas.

Another advantage is that, unlike the places the previous two games took place in, the highlands seem to be well-populated by native Mudokons. In that situation, I'd have plenty of buddies to trade/share items with. Not to mention that, by the time Abe and Munch got to them, the natives had been dealing with the Industrialists for a while (probably something to do with the Almighty Raisin being so close by). Seems like they're doing great, compared to the natives around the Monsaic Lines (driven to hiding from Sligs) and Necrum (there are none).

The grassy mountainsides seem to be ideal for Meep herding, while the mountain streams probably host a steady supply of fish. There's also an abundance of evergreens (wood for fire, tools, and shelter) and other vegetation (probably includes berries and edible roots, not to mention Spooce Shrubs).

kjjcarpenter, personally, I'd quite enjoy the hot Scrabanian sands. You know, if they weren't crawling with mines!

Thanks for all the feedback this week, guys. There'll be another Big Blog tomorrow, as always, but it'll be a little earlier in the morning as I've got to dash out!
