I hear you don't like dubstep?

Posted 04-23-2014 at 08:02 AM by Nepsotic
I know how much you've all been missing my awesome blogs, so I decided to treat you.

As part of my thanks to Vy for building my PC (and just because she's awesome) I made this track for her. She really likes Waltz'(s?).
This is it.

I've really been expanding a lot lately, music wise. As some of you may know, I've been planning to develop a survival horror game for about a year now, and it seems odd to think that now it's actually going to happen. Everything's well thought out and planned, it's basically ready to go, but the trouble is money (it always is).

We have a team with the most important areas covered, so now the plan is to develop a couple of quick tiny games (that wouldn't be under our studio name) in order to help raise the funds. At the same time, we will be working on another relatively small game, but one that we are putting a hell of a lot of effort into. The main game, Cognitive Rift won't start production until way into next year when we have the studio up and running. This smaller game, who's current working title is Cleft of the Universe (2 deep 4 u) has a story which sits alongside that of the main game. In fact, there will be four side stories to the main game that will be made/conceptualized way before we start production on it, they will all be different genres but still have a story that ties into the plot of Cognitive Rift (which is so intricate that there's no way I'm explaining it now).
Anyway, production for CotU is set to begin shortly even though we've already done a tonne of work for it.

Some music for it I've been working on:

https://www.dropbox.com/s/9wpjoq1bow...finallevel.mp3
https://www.dropbox.com/s/rw2mpgakvs...dustrial01.mp3
https://www.dropbox.com/s/3n1i2ehaai...l01%20loop.mp3
https://www.dropbox.com/s/spu3j127vu...l02%20loop.mp3

https://www.dropbox.com/s/5szlaeyuhw...us%20Title.mp3

And some awesome concept art done by Slog, who is the art director.

The main character, a dog.

An enemy (you'll probably be confused, but it'll make perfect sense when you play the game)

Some level concept art.

And this is an early idea of what the style of the game is going to be (yes, it is set in space).

So hopefully with all that you get an idea of the atmosphere I'm going for with this game (dreamlike, isolated and surreal).
Oh, and this is a monster design for the main game, Cognitive Rift, which I thought I'd chuck in.

So that's just a little update on what's gone on in the past year.
Ideas for other side stories include a manga-styled psychological horror play novel called Water's Edge and, well that's it at the moment.

Each of the side stories will be based around one of the four main playable characters from Cognitive Rift and will not only add to the main story but help explain it, whilst adding more depth to the characters.

No, the dog isn't a playable character in CR, "so why is he the main character in CotU", I hear you all cry with alacrity. Well, there's a tonne of shit you won't understand until you play the game, so buy it! When it's out... please?

Slog care to add anything interesting I may have missed?

(If any of you check my art thread ever some of these images will already be familiar to you)

You obviously forgot to mention the insane streak of luck we got finding a passionate programmer who's building the engine from scratch, duh

We've got a good chunk of CotU done already, I'm just waiting to see the mechanics in action before continuing so there isn't some massive overhaul mid way through production because one of them just didn't work out.

All I can think of at the moment.

I've listened to two tracks now and will be listening to the rest. I'm cirtainly impressed, they give off a similar feel to me that the PS1 game, Dragon Seeds gave. They all sound great so far.

The monster looks like something out of the original Quake, which is pretty cool.

Hope it turns out as good as you expect.

Thanks! All the monsters have a theme of human deformities and individual symbolism for extra pretentiousness.

Ah thanks, I was mainly inspired by Silent Hill music, I don't know if you can notice the similarities.

Music IS fabulous. Just some more tension would make it oohbitch! Especially in the FinalLevel one.

Okay, I'll talk about the music instead of the game.

First off I'm stoked that you're doing stuff asides Dubstep, mainly because what I've heard is rather good if I do say so. Ambientnice01, is really cool. Let me just say that straight off, it sounds pretty good, especially for someone who I seem to remember has little to no musical training? That being said, it needed a little more work I think, to polish it off, those empty spaces lasted just a little too long imo. You know, with a little editing and moving bits around, if you dropped a beat in there it'd sound like a kick arse experimental hip hop backing. Let me give you an example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v-AOcTlVAac - you see what I mean where there's a fairly subtle beat that builds around the rest of the music. It's relaxing as fuuuck. Any way, you ever go ahead and do that, you show me ASAP.

Finallevel as well, sounded like it was almost there, I was half expecting you to subtly make use of some arabic scales/ chords in there. Still, thinking back from where you started, it is milessss better so keep it up, man!

The stuff from Cosmic Drift was pretty nice, rather minimalist, which is not a bad thing in my opinion. It's the sort of subtle music I'd put on in the background whilst I was doing something else you know? Minimalist/ ambient, even post-rock are genres of music where you should be able to pay attention and enjoy the track, or have it on more to accentuate what you're doing already. Any way, pretentious bull shit over, keep at it!

Not dubstep? I'll take a listen later. I'm so proud of you, man :')

I think I remember telling Slog that I could potentially send a testing version of my Virtual Machine project in March. Sorry I never followed that up with anything, but I've decided to completely rewrite it, and now that uni's started I have to do bits and pieces when I have time. Getting someone who isn't me to do things is a good decision

Thanks a lot, and yeah I was definitely going for a minimalist approach with those tracks, something to fit with the paper-like art style and dreamlike atmosphere, my usual tracks are a lot more intricate.
I actually added those gaps in the ambientnice01 track intentionally but now that you mention it, they do seem a little long.
I really liked that beat you sent, reminded me a lot of KOAN Sound.

Ha, you know that I don't actually do much dubstep anymore? Meltdown is my first dubstep track in a few months. I'm leaning more towards experimental bass music now.

I'd rather not for REASONS but I dunno, at it's roots it's a plain old puzzle platformer with significantly more puzzle than platforming.

The dog can change moods through certain triggers that will completely alter everything around dog, which is fun

Actually a lot of the major mechanics involve the world around you changing in one way or another. I LIKE MECHANICS LIKE THAT BECAUSE IT'S VISUALLY AWESOME AND LEAVES MORE ROOM FOR WELL THOUGHT OUT PUZZLES.

I'll buy it if it has loads of super double HD BluRay 4k FXAA mega smooth clear textures and 5,000,000 polygon 4d models. In addition, it should support AMDVidia SLIfire so I can use 5 Radeon GTX7990 Titan White Limited HD Edition with HUD mods and custom LED lights.

Oh and I also think that you should spend 99% of your time making ultimate realistic shader HD tactics and dolphin dive physX ice cream sandwich edition extensions .

I don't know if I missed it, but have you guys come up with some 'team name'? I know you have loads of planning with the game and all, but how do you plan on releasing it/making people know about it?
Posted 04-25-2014 at 11:15 AM by RoryF

Slog Bait's Avatar
We have a PR guy. I believe our team name is Terminal Rift, when the game gets closer to release we're going to hype it, a few smaller simple games are in the making as well to be sold so that's likely to gain a small bit of attention, and trying to get it greenlit on Steam seems like the route we're going to end up taking.
