I've been shopping around a bit because I'm on beautiful tasty welfare. Oooh, feels so good in my mouth. Aaaaah. Welfare. Not really shopping, but deciding on what's necessary and what isn't. I've concluded on having a Cellphone that doesn't actively try to lead me to an untimely end is a good idea. My current phone is a dumbphone with a dumb touch screen and a dumb headphones jack that doesn't appear anywhere else in technology. It's a LG Molesticutioner, can't say I recommend this phone. It is actually bleeding battery fluid onto some exposed finger bones as I type this. Ow. Ouch.

So I'm in the market for something newer and truer with the condition it won't bleed me of my money and my blood. Because this current one fails on BOTH COUNTS!!!

I'm enough of a pleb to jump straight for the Galaxy S III, which is still kinda new and fancy in Canada, which apparently has the worst mobile phone business on the planet. It's a miserable comedy of erroneous subscriptions, bizarre consistency in hardware quality and horrible Indian men screaming at you like a bansheeva. Despite working for a phone company last year I'm in a real alien landscape as far as the hardware market goes. Contracts and Plans are more or less universal. I'm probably going with a provider that doesn't cover every inch of The Great White North with towers but has unlimited features for about 40 bucks Canadian (That's about 760 Euros or .16 american cents for those geography nuts out there also equivalent to a chinese boy with at least 2 missing appendages, ladies choice). And I'll just pay the phone off on a tab.

So tell me about your fucking phones is what I'm trying to say. I'd really fucking appreciate your advice/opinions on the matter, god damn you.

Yup, your phone must really suck. And I'm in no way jealous of you having it.

My phone is a phone. I can call people and text people but not at the same time.

It also has a stripped-down version of Mahjong, which I can proudly call the worst game ever made. But not as bad as the other one.

I'm thinking the Galaxy Nexus. It's a 100$ initial investment, 40$ unlimited everything, comes with the latest Android OS (or the second-latest) and has a LOT of room for customizing and such.

I don't have a computer of my own right now, just a laptop generously being shared to me, and a fair bit of my current responsibilities requires A) having a phone number and B) being reachable at that phone number. Also, it uses sweet magnificent MicroSD.

The latest Android OS is 4.1 Jelly Bean, I'd recommend the galaxy ACE to you, its what I'm using right now, but I don't know what phone you're looking for. I'd say give it a go anyway, check it out, it's capable of many things, but unfortunately isn't a high end device nor does it support flash, however when rooted and with a bit of tweaking, flash can run fine, (I could help you out there if need be). The problem is it runs on android 2.2 froyo, however there are many ways you can upgrade it, as I have. I have it running on 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich,i wouldn't advise you to upgrade it to this level, though as it runs a bit slower, and Cyanogen Mod 9 is a bastard to install on the ACE. I'd recommend upgrading it to Android 2.3.7 Eclair at the maximum and it should run fine, provided you root it. It's relatively cheap as well, you can pick one up for just about £100 (I don't know what that is in dollars). It also has a decent screen size and a nice amount of RAM.

But y'know, whatever you want to get is fine...

I’ve been using a Windows Phone 7 for just over a year now and I can’t recommend it enough. The OS is slick even after all this time, it has some decent personalisation but not a crazy amount, the app selection is pretty good (not as extensive as iOS or Android but pretty much whatever you need will be there somewhere).

It has a good selection of built-in stuff, like social media linking, emails, Office, Xbox, a music and video player, camera. It also has some nifty little features like Battery Saver (shuts off all the unnecessary shit when the battery gets low, re-enables when charging/charged).

The UI is what sold me. It’s a really bold visual design that stands out from other OSes but at the same time is really simple to pick up. It’s full of animations and motion and life. Stuff you pin to your home screen gets Live Tiles (auto-updating icons which give you all kinds of info depending on the app). The keyboard is really responsive and the auto-correct I find works well.

What I like best besides the UI is how it doesn’t have the crazy fiddling with shit that Android does – no version worries, no spec issues, no slowdown and shutting down background apps etc.

But you still get a decent choice of hardware. The new Nokia phones look really nice for instance.

A big word of warning though: Windows Phone 8 is coming out in the Winter, and supposedly current WP7 devices won’t be getting the full update.

I just bought a new phone a week ago. The ones I was considering were:

Samsung Galaxy Nexus: A little old now, but still pretty damned good. Probably counts as the best of the midrange at the moment. It's also the only phone available at the moment with an official build of Android 4.1, which looks really nice.
Samsung Galaxy S II 4G: The case is a bit plasticy, but the specs are good and Samsung make good phones. Note that this is the 4G version, which is significantly different to the 3G one.
Samsung Galaxy S III: Still new enough to be overpriced here. I'm not convinced that it's that much better than the SII 4G.
HTC One X: This is what I got (although it's called the XL here, as I got the LTE version). Better specs than the SII 4G, not quite as good specs as the S III but close enough to make no real difference. It's got an absolutely lovely screen and the overall design of it is great. It just feels nice in my hand. Also, HTC make excellent interfaces.

I've pretty much summed up the high-end phone market at the moment. If you want something mid-range, there are a lot more options. I don't know what it's like over there, but the mid-range phones aren't actually that much cheaper here.

I'm set on the Galaxy Nexus or HTC One X at this point, they both fall comfortably into my price range and I'm not altogether sure I'm ready for one of these weird-fangled Superphones. I was considering a Windows phone earlier but a friend shooed me away from the idea because he claimed it lacks customization, specifically for emulation, which is something I'm set on making use of. The Galaxy Nexus lacks an SD card slot which is a bit crap but it does have 17 hour battery life, an important thing in the life of a lazy galoot. One X is overall superior as far as everything under the hood goes, but I have to go on a 3 year contract to get any of that.

Is that how it works anywhere else in the world? In Canada our lives are basically decided by a series of 3 year mobility contracts.

I bought a Samsung Galaxy S III and so far I'm incredibly pleased with it, but it's the first smartphone I've ever owned so I can't really compare it to anything.

Off the top of my head you can change your lock screen wallpaper, you can choose a black or white theme (determines the background color and main text), you can choose your accent color (determines the color of tiles and some other text throughout the UI), you can change your call ringtone and alarms with your own MP3s, you can choose from a range of pre-installed options for your text alert and calendar notifications, you can pick and choose what apps go on your home screen.

It has customisation, just not on the level of Android.

As for emulation, I think there are some SNES/Game Boy apps where you upload the ROMS using Dropbox, but a friend of mine uses those and I haven’t downloaded them myself, so I can’t vouch for their quality.

Buy a Nokia, specifically, my Nokia. Google, Aidan's Nokia and I'm sure it will come up. Seriously, a sturdy mother fucker. With Tetris.

My current semi necrotic phone doesn't even have that. It has a terrible pipedream type game and a sudoku with made up rules.
