I think this symbolizes a lonely man who tries to find pleasure in material goods.
But in the end his spirit turns black, empty, and his heart bleeds because he is forever lost to the addiction of material stuff.
The agony that comes with the obsession of gaining more and more valuable superficial items.
I think the cake symbolizes that Helium tries to 'buy' his heart with gifts rather than love, because a man so obsessed with the material world is hard to love for who he is.

It really didn't make sense. But interesting series.
