10-year nostalgia and an obituary of sorts

I was looking through old stuff and generally reminiscing the other day. I thought of childhood, things that had defined it, and things that I kept to this day. One of those things was: LEGO.

The plastic bricks have timeless and universal appeal, and I'm well aware of that. As such I won't give another lecture on the merits of the old Leg Godt. I'm also well aware that I talk about Lego quite a lot anyway, so this will be more specifically focused.

My point being, I still play with Lego as a creative outlet, to relieve stress and build nice things - sort of like a more accessible version of Games Workshop, with a slightly better effort-to-satisfaction ratio. It's something that I associate with life, not a particular part of it. So if I'm not counting Lego as a whole as a child-only obsession, what kind of Lego defined my childhood?

One (albiet portmanteau) word: Bionicle.

And not rubbery bendy recent Bionicle. Proper, chunky, early noughties, biomechanical, stiff-jointed, mythical, cog-driven, pseudo-Polynesian, recognisably Lego-y, Maori-offending Bionicle.

Yes, so it got a bit silly in later years, but let us not forget it gave us these:

And because it was Lego, you could stick it together and make better (read: bigger) models. It even had it's own surprisingly good comic series, which some dutiful souls have generously posted on all over BIONICLESector01, the leading Bionicle wiki. So good news there, apart from for the original publishers.

Bohrok would follow, then the first ones again but with shiny bits, then Rahkshi, then it all started going a bit downhill from there. But by that point I was growing up anyway, so I might be biased on that point.

So yes, a minor mediation on happy memories. The only reason I bring this up now is because I recently heard (late to the party, I know) that Lego Co. are dropping the line, to be replaced by the unimpressive, more generic sci-fi Hero Factory. To be honest, it was probably time for it to end anyway, a decade was quite long enough, but it's still a little sad. But hey, at least they managed to get a big end-of-the-world story arc out before they went.

So... yeah. One story ends, another begins. But all shall be Lego a hundred years hence.

I once got the Toa of Light (with his motorcycle thing) by bullshitting Lego over the phone saying I bought it and it only came with a few parts.

I have the first blue Toa, the green Bohrok, the red Toa Nova or whatever the armoured ones were called, and the blue Rahkshi. Also some of the weird animal ones.

I have all six of the original and very few of the newer ones. Man i loved Bionicle when i was little. It is sad that they dropped the line, but it least they finished the story (it least i think they did).

Does anyone remember Slizers? The proto-Bionicle line. They may have had a different name in America. Throwbots or similar rubbish.

I did collect quite a bit of Lego sets. I got the Lego movie maker set with the camera too. That was fun. I had a couple of the Bionicles, but the Earth one was my favorite. That guy was awesome.

I played with Lego a whole load, but Bionicle came out too late for me, which is interesting because BM is my age. Call me an old fogey, but whatever that stuff is, it doesn't look like Lego.

Bionicle was an evolution of Lego Technic, aimed at teens and used for creating more advanced working models like cars and heavy machinery. It included rods and gears and such.

I remember Slizers, and I frankly loved them more than any other lego franchise. I thought Bionicle were clunky and annoying, and I wished they'd stuck with Slizers.

Slizers are awesome

This is the best set ever released.

You gripped the main strut of the vehicle like a gun's handle and pulled the little yellow trigger. That would make the punching arm fully extend with some force (elastic bands reset it). The goal was to hit the round target on the opponent's Cyber Striker vehicle. Doing so would, due to the the design, leverage and force of impact, cause the cockpit's restraints to open, the seat invert and literally throw the driver figurine from the cockpit. Brilliant. The elastic bands wore out faster than the entertainment value, which for me it never did.

That was a good Christmas. I must rebuild them.

i never had Bionicle or anything newer than the standard LEGO set. originally i had bags and bags of the stuff, but over time it dwindled down to a box full.

i also used to fuck around with these things that were a cross between MiniBlox and Clics, only better. you could make absoultely anything out of them, as long as it had at least 3 sides. i loved making oil tankers.

@BM

Actually that reminds me of this set that my Dad gave me for christmas. It was a big briefcase filled with lego. And with it came some electronics and a CD.

There was all sorts of stuff that you could do with it, but the best was... You could build this robot with moving arms and all on wheel. And you also built a mosquito that had the same mechanics as your... gun thingies. It's purpose was to hit the robot's buttons and win.

The robot could also be programmed to recognize the room by sort of... building it. Like those blue-print programs you can use to plan your house.

It was amazing.

I have a box full of Bionicles that I've been meaning to sell for years now. It turns out the only one that could have been worth something lost most of it's value when I opened it.

I have the all of the first set of Toa, all of the second set of Toa, all of the Rakshi all of the Borok and Borok-kal, the Toa of Light with the motorcycle-thing (I remember struggling to build that thing) and some weird creature things (Nui-rama and Nui-Jaga is my memory serves).

I also have the Makuta, who deserves a special mention. I'm thinking of keeping him and putting him on a shelf somewhere because he looks so goddamn cool.

I had a red bionicle (the first ones that came out) and a white and green rahkshi. Things looked so fucking cool, the makuta one looks familiar but I'm not sure if that's my memory clouding it.

I completely forgot about these so cool blog post

Fuck man. I just nostalgia'd all over the place, Bionicle was the shit, and continued to be until around the time the movie came out.

The Bohrohk or whatever (guys who curled into balls) were boss.

I always regretted not purchasing all of the first series sets. I only have a single bohrok, which is greatly dissapointing to me. The thing which I liked about the first few Bionicles was the fact that new pieces would come with them, which could be oh-so-very useful when creating your own versions. Of course, the adding of new pieces is eventually what made me stop being interested. Every single set had almost twenty new pieces, that really only worked in combination with that set. It made it feel less like Lego, and more like action figures you could take apart.

I remember I got Tahu first. I spent so damn long trying to snap those ball-joints into their holders. They just did not want to go in. And then even if you did manage to force it in, it would usually pinch your fingers. But it was all worth it in the end.

My nephew used to be mad on Bionicle. His favorite was the red one. He stopped collecting them just after I got him the red enemy one (I forget what they called them, but I'm talking about the ones that Crashpunk posted). He never built the bigger bionicle out of the others because he liked the individual ones too much. I think that he felt he'd be bastardising their image if he mixed their parts up.

You may have had your lego, but I bet you never had my Six Million Dollar Man toy. He was great. You got to look through his eyes and open up bits of his arm.

I feel EXACTLY the same way when it comes to mixing sets. Even the prospect of adding a single brick to any other set makes me feel uneasy. Probably becasue I get this sickening feeling I'll lose the piece somehow.

I never got any new, but I had some Slizers in a box of second-hand stuff and they were pretty cool.

My favourite Lego series will always be the original Pirate sets, but long live Bionicle all the same.

I played that game tonnes when I was younger. Sadly my save glitched and I became stuck in an empty room.

I never did finish it, as I believe either the game glitched out, or I missed something important. Either way it was damn awesome. I remember playing it. It would load for almost a whole 30 seconds between every screen, which did not detract from the game at all. That was on my old ME I think. And with a terrible internet. I actually have the game downloaded onto my hard disk... Somewhere I think

First Toa would be a good start. I've only got the one and I've got everything else that I wanted.

Reading comic #3. That's some good shit.

Oh, and Bullet Magnet? Three of the four Rahi (beast) sets had pop-out-and-hit-opponent bits. You had 'Boxing motorbike dragonfly nymphs', 'Big punchy scorpions' and 'Godzilla heads-on-legs with extendable necks'.

Also Bohrok.
