Demon Moth

Posted 06-10-2010 at 05:24 PM by Wings of Fire
About fifteen minutes ago I noticed a red rolled up thing on the top of my tv, so I went and picked it up. It felt gummy and cold to the touch and when I rubbed it it felt like rose petals, and like rose petals it secreted something red onto my fingers.

I was thinking to myself 'Okay, how did a rose petal fly into my room and on top of my tv?'

Then I noticed my rose petal hand four wings, with a design on them.

I screamed and threw it away and it landed behind the back of my tv, then I went to the bathroom, washed and scrubbed my hand and tried my hardest not to puke. I then went back into my room when I felt comfortable enough and told a couple of friends how I was freaked out like a little girl, I then checked behind my tv again to get rid of it.

It was gone.

It was on the wall right next to me.

After another few minutes of freaking out and feeling like crying I went and asked my brother to get rid of it, the moment he touched it with some newspaper it jumped up and flew out the landing.

But that thing bled on me, I fucking crushed it between my fingers.

So yeah, I'm still freaked.

There was a moth the size of a bat poised on the bench on my back porch once. Beautiful little bastard, bigger than my hand.

admittedly, even i would be a little freaked out if i just squashed something between my fingers without realising it was a moth.

but moths are nice. i had a pet Lime Hawk-moth, once. now, i have a pet spider in my room, but it seems to have either moved somewhere else and/or died.

As a rule I never kill spiders. Even if they're living somewhere in the way, I just move the buggers somewhere safer.

Moths are cool by me too.
Mosquitoes and flies can fuck right off though.

Spiders are really handy things. I used to have some outside of my window.

We get some big-ass spiders round here, but I don't kill them. They eat cockroaches, for a start.
I actually really like moths, they I get pissed off at them if they die on my stuff.
Mosquitoes never really bother me - in fact, they hardly ever even try to bite me. I must have bad blood or something.
Flies - well, I f***ing hate flies. But even more I hate the mess they make when you squish them, so I never kill those either.

Good lord how I hate insects except grasshoppers, ants, crickets, butterflies, moths, mantis and bees. Spiders I'm fine with, as long as they're about a meter away from me. Anything else that crawls or flies with six legs can just fuck off.

I found one of these once. Beautiful.

Elephant hawk moth.

Also one of these:

Hummingbird hawk moth

But the weirdest insect I've ever found in the garden was the bee fly

I love 'em. Man up, Joe.

I sat down to relax under a tree the other day. The wind blew my hair into my face so I brushed it away. Afterwards, I looked at my hand and saw a giant green tree spider on it. Every muscle in my body spasmed as I lashed out trying to remove it.

I saw a hummingbird moth once, and spent ten minutes debating with a friend whether it was a hummingbird or a moth.

But yeah, accidental bugslaughter sucks. I always silently apologise when I accidentally tread on a snail. I once half trod on a slug before I realised it was there. Naturally I stopped before it got squashed, so the pressure just made it sick up all of its organs instead. Mainly white tubey intestines.

Moths are cool; there was a really pretty one that sat on my wall next to my reading light for about a week last Summer. T'was a good moth. I do like spiders, too, and snails. Not so big on slugs; there were some huge crimson slugs that used to hang around outside my school - they were like something out of a low budget 60s or 70s horror movie!
I like bees, mainly because they contribute to the world so much I guess, and the human race is dependant on them for survival, but I have nothing good to say for wasps.

Also, I used to like ladybirds but don't know because Europe has been taken over by Asian Harlequin Ladybirds, which were imported to Europe by continental farmers because they eat so many pests. Unfortunately they also eat European ladybirds and basically anything that can't run fast enough. More than a thousand species of British insects are being wiped out by killer invader ladybirds.

Flies are annoying when they come into contact with windows. I liked Douglas Adams' joke about the guy who invented a species of super-intelligent wasps that could find their way through the open half of a half-open window.

Just so you know, wasps also contribute to human welfare, as both pollinators and pest control.

There are a million billion moths in this area of Ontario.

Last summer I spent a weekend in Kingston (about 30-45 minutes away) serving coffee to the half drunk masses of Canadian good ol' boys who made their way to Guitarfest. At night we had two camping spotlights illuminating the Coffee van, and we had some gi-fucking-gantic moths fluttering around. There were so many that the smaller moths were crushed into the lights by the larger moths and because of the heat a sort of burnt moth casserole formed at the bottom of the lamps.

Given your description, I suspect it died pretty soon afterwards, either from wounds or from getting eaten by something because it was slower.

I had a pet banana slug named Iago that looked very similar to the one pictured above. It was about six inches long. Love moths and all insects/arachnids in general. Can't stand killing them. Like MeechMunchie I feel like crying when I step on a snail.

I am afraid of bees. A wasp got stuck in my beard when I was out skating last week. That was unpleasant.

After a rainstorm I'm always mindful of where I step, because out here it's damned near impossible to go anywhere after it rains without stepping on a snail, slug, or worm.

I always wanted to keep Madagascar Hissing Cockroaches as pets. I don't know whats cooler; the fact that they're gigantic and segmented, or the fact that they hiss when agitated.

A terrarium full of miniature Wal-mart customers. I like it.
I'll drop a holiday sale in there and watch them go berserk.

Yes, I am aware that he has had that avatar for more than a week. I was trying to be funny. Sheesh...
