I BUILT THESE IN A WORKSHOP. WITH A BOX OF SCRAPS AND ALL THE NECESSARY TOOLS

Posted 12-17-2009 at 04:37 PM by Mac Sirloin
I built these out of various pieces of scrap lying around the bench at my workshop at Saint Vincent De Paul. Tomorrow's my last day.
First up: Photo Canister Monster.

I've made a ton of these, but this guy is probably my favorite.

It's supposed to be a gun. Kind of. The brass parts are the barrels and the black parts are handles. Most of the body/casing is bent Meccano.

This is kind of a loudspeaker...thing. In real life it would be held by the bottom handle and you'd speak into the longer one. THE SOUNDWAVES MAKE YOU MELT

This one's kind of supposed to be a rocket launcher. the very end of the 'barrel' (The black marette with the spring on it) Is the oldest piece I made for these, and was originally going to be like the the first, but it lended itself more to this. The brown handle on the back came off of...something or other. You may not be able to tell, but there's two different coloured wires running around it. It took me about three hours total to get perfect.

An itsy-bitsy pistol majigger. The thought I had in my head making it was a handgun that shoots lightning.

This one is definitely my favorite. the brass part at the end? That's a used rifle shell. A small, old spring loaded switch sits at an angle to serve as a trigger, and the 9 volt battery is wired to the switch. It doesn't DO anything, but I just love how it looks. All wires and zip ties. The thing metal bit that goes behind the barrel is part of what was unfortunately buried beneath the gun tape and scrap metal that secured the switch. It was an old hair curler part, but perforated with holes like WWII Heavy Caliber Machine guns. It added a really neat aesthetic, but the part behind the handle kind of meshes to my hand, making it a bit more comfortable. It's basically a functional 1:1.5 scaled pistol that uses a charge delivered by the battery to blast shrapnel through the Rifle Shell.
Note the red marette in the pictures-that's not it being close to the screen. It's just fucking huge.

And here's everything together:Photobucket

I have an art book with stuff like this in it. You'd probably enjoy it. It's yours if you want it.

I'd love it. See if you can make out what it says behind the Giant in the last picture.

my favourite was definitely the gun with the brass barrels.

and with all of them pictured next to the Iron Giant model and Photo Canister Monster, it makes it look like the weapons are accessories for the model, making the Photo Canister Monster the enemy. fucking A.

I'm glad you guys like them.
The tiny baby giant I came across by chance at SVDP, they came with the 'special edition' VHS. He's articulated at the neck, shoulders and hips. I imgine you could track him down on Ebay.
It even has the dent int he head.

Kind of a word fart about the last one: you can see the part I was talking about on the barrel. The second last image, between the Rifle Cartridge and red wire.

As for the Photo Monster, They're really easy to make. Just get a pen knife or craft knife, keep the plastic relatively warm and go to town. I'll make a blog showing all of them off at a later date.
