Ducks can be homosexual necrophiliacs too

"The First Case of Homosexual Necrophilia in the Mallard Anas platyrhynchos (Aves: Anatidae)", Deinsea: Annual of the Natural History Museum Rotterdam, 2001.

This eight-year old publication contains "one of the greatest sentences in modern science writing": “Next to the obviously dead duck, another male mallard… mounted the corpse and started to copulate, with great force.”

Oh my, Donald!

And to think, I thought I was the only one.

First observation: Its generic name is Anas? Oh dear.

Second observation: Although it's later made explicit, I at first laughed at the idea of the first duck's death coming from merely walking into the glass façade.

Third observation: The abstract doesn't make explicit whether either homosexual rape of a living duck or consensual homosexual acts have been observed in the species. Which it should.

I once attended a seminar on the co-evolution of duck penises and vaginae. It was very interesting.

BM, I curse you for sharing a more interesting scientific paper when I'm currently obliged to get through a study on the effect pathogens have on the epidermal characteristics of post-pathogen leaves.

It's clarified later on:

:
Bagemihl (1999) in his well-researched and exhaustive overview of animal homosexuality, showed that in the mallard 'the proportion of male homosexual pairs varies between populations, anywhere from 2-19 percent of all pairs'. So, male homosexuality can be regarded as a common phenomenon among mallards. According to Bagemihl, drake pairs, however, do not exhibit overt sexual activity: they normally only show behaviour that preludes copulation but neither partner mounts the other. Interestingly, Bagemihl (1999) noted that 'some males in homosexual pairs have been observed attempting to rape or forcibly copulate with males outside their pairbond'. Initially, this may have been the case on 5 June 1995: the drake attempted to rape NMR 9997-00232 who fled, and the two got engaged in a true homosexual ARF.

Yeah, Nate, if it didn't clarify at all then it truly would be bad, but the ideal abstract should mention what knowledge this is building up on.

In this field, everyone already knows.

What is that field, exactly? Animal sexuality? Animal homosexuality?
